During 3 semesters of integrated coursework, students will take 3 laboratory research rotations and select mentors for focused thesis research. Students who earn Ph.D. degrees in the CBMP track will be positioned to continue their careers performing the interdisciplinary and translational systems biology research that will epitomize the future of biomedical research. For additional information, admissions committee chair: Dr. Kevin Beck, cbnp@umdnj.edu Infection, Immunity and Inflammation (I 3 ) Immunology Microbiology Infectious Disease Oral Biology The I 3 Track of is ideal for students interested in training for basic and translational research careers in immunology, microbiology, and microbial and host pathogenesis. The coursework for I 3 (includes introductory and advanced courses taught in lectures and small, Socratic group formats) comprises the first 15 months of the program and provides the theoretical bases for molecular biologic, biochemical, cell biologic, and organismal approaches to studying infection, immunity, and inflammation. Following coursework, I 3 students will be prepared to critically evaluate and implement these approaches in their Ph.D. dissertation projects. Students will select a mentor and project from among the I 3 faculty and will be positioned to continue their careers as leaders in biomedical research. For additional information, admissions committee chair: Dr. George Yap, iii@umdnj.edu Biomedical Engineering (Joint Program with New Jersey Institute of Technology) A Ph.D degree program in Biomedical Engineering is jointly offered and awarded by UMDNJ and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The program goal is to train scientists with unique strengths in biomedical sciences and engineering disciplines. The students will be among a novel group of scientists who are pursuing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific research for applications in medicine and clinical practice. Students can perform their thesis research with a faculty who has an appointment in either university with expertise in relevant areas. Through this collaborative program, students will have outstanding opportunities to prepare themselves for a wide range of rewarding careers in practicing and developing innovative technologies in medicine and biomedical engineering and other health-care related fields. Students after completing the program can successfully follow-up their career paths in academia, industry, clinical research laboratories, and health-care and clinical facilities. For additional information, track director: Dr. Kevin Pang, bme@umdnj.edu, (or NJIT Dr. Richard Foulds, foulds@njit.edu)

4 Program Leading to Master s Degrees MS & MBS The master s program is designed to promote integration of the various biomedical disciplines into a single graduate level educational experience, providing a broad background in biomedical science while maintaining flexibility to meet the needs and interests of individual students. In so doing this program helps students find meaningful careers in the biomedical sciences or improve their academic records so that they are more competitive in applying to medical, dental or veterinary school. Entering students choose one of three tracks (medical, dental or general) that are designed to provide a directed curriculum with plenty of flexibility. For students in the medical or dental tracks there is the possibility to take courses alongside medical and dental students enrolled in the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) or New Jersey Dental School (NJDS), respectively. The program offers over 50 courses that are taught in both the day and evening and that range in topics from a required core curriculum that introduces students to cutting-edge biomedical science to electives in Stem Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Cancer Biology, Regional Gross Anatomy, Neuroscience, and The Business of Science. For a full listing of courses go to: The two degrees granted are the Master of Science (MS) degree (25 course credits with a 5 credit laboratory-based thesis) or the Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) degree (30 course credits).
