6 Building an Entrepreneurial Culture Create a system-wide suite of courses, grants, and mentorship programs Create a more entrepreneurial campus cultures Support students and faculty in moving discoveries and ideas into the marketplace Each aspect of SUNY Start-up will incorporate participation and guidance from entrepreneurs who are members of the community, alumni, or have connections to the SUNY campuses. 6 6
7 Building an Entrepreneurial Culture SUNY ENGINE: Educational Network to Grow Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Pulls together students, faculty, and administrators to report on entrepreneurial initiatives on their campus, to hear what s happening across the state, and to discuss action plans to develop a consortium. Entrepreneur-In- Residence: Entrepreneurs with proven subject matter expertise and management experience will work with aspiring entrepreneurs at college campuses to identify the best ideas and most promising business opportunities, and help map them to sources of funding and leadership talent so they may grow to full scale.
8 Building an Entrepreneurial Culture Student Sandbox and Competitions: Student Sandbox- Partnering with CNYREDC, MVREDC is working with Syracuse University in developing student entrepreneurial programs with SUNY IT acting as lead organization. The goal is to pilot this in the fall 2012 semester and to include all the colleges in MVREDC. Student Competitions There are existing student based competitions across the state. SUNY is developing a plan to coordinate competitions and to promote and enhance our existing state-wide competition. Student Marketing working with chambers of commerce, SUNY will provide businesses in college towns marketing tools, calendars and best practices to help capture the student market.

10 NY SUNY Works SUNY endeavors to link its academic programs, as much as possible, to the workforce needs of the State. Industry-wide training initiatives: Partnering with DOL, create a network of programs available across the state. Co-ops and Internships: SUNY is developing a state-wide structured educational strategy integrating classroom studies with learning through productive work experiences in a field related to a student s academic career or goals.

13 Innovate NY - Building SUNY s Research Base Collaborative Research: Strengthen state-wide research collaboration and build a critical mass of world-class faculty researchers capable of attracting significant research dollars Start-up Facilities & Equipment Access Program: Provides start-up companies access to SUNY facilities, equipment and intellectual capital. SUNY is home to four Centers of Excellence, three Centers for Advanced Technology, and twelve small business incubators. Together these elements form SUNY s comprehensive pipeline to create and transition innovations into business opportunities through startup companies.

NYS Over 50 Incubators SUNY 13 Incubators Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR):established in 1994 by the State of New York to utilize the extensive knowledge base and other engineering resources, of the SUNY system to help industry in the state to compete more effectively and grow new high paid technical jobs.

17 SUNY INC Incent New Companies Create a true development and commercialization chain that links all the players in a fast-track process, from concept all the way to commercialization. Align top researchers across campuses and at other public and private organizations across the state. Taking advantage of our unequalled statewide reach and our network of incubators and economic development centers, Funnel discoveries to successive experts along the chain, promoting and tracking the concept through each development stage, from design to manufacturing, marketing, and even job training. The end result: new companies, new jobs, and the growth of a new economy

Small Business Development Centers: The SBDC is a diversified partnership between the State University, the U.S. Small Business Administration, New York State, higher education and the private sector.
19 SUNY INC Incent New Companies EntreSkills : An interactive, web-based program. It provides students with an introduction to entrepreneurship and the skills needed to start and operate a business. EntreSkills is a flexible educational program that empowers educators to customize their teaching methods. It may be used as a stand-alone course or educators may select specific chapters to supplement and create lesson plans. Other Programs: EntreSkills for Veterans EntreSkills for Entrepreneurs
20 SUNY INC Incent New Companies FastTrac: Builds upon the successful outcome of a model program that SUNY has implemented in New York City, in cooperation with the New York City Department of Small Business Services and the Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship. Jump Start NY Talent in Transition - Created in the heat of the financial crisis in late 2008, this partnership between the City (EDC) and the State (SUNY Levin) has shown great success. Confucius Institute for Business: Partnership with the Nanjing University of Finance and Economics to help American business professionals enhance their ability to do business in China. Five Centers located at SUNY Global, University at Buffalo, Binghamton University, Stony Brook University, and the College of Optometry.
