2 Guidance Notes for Job Applicants The following information is designed to help all job applicants who are seeking employment with Plymouth College of Art. You must complete and submit an application form; we would not normally accept a Curriculum Vita (CV) in its place, although we will accept a CV as part of your additional information. The application form must be completed fully and electronic applications are welcome. Your application must reach the College no later than the closing date stated on the advertisement/covering letter. It is advised that you read through each section carefully and refer to these guidance notes, role profile and personal specification to help you to complete the form. About The College Plymouth established its first College of Art in Now some 158 years later the College has a history of provision including over 28 years of higher education courses in art and design and is known for its lively, friendly and creative environment. It is a thriving, bustling College where the teaching staff are drawn from the widest range of art and design disciplines and most are established practitioners, artists, designers and makers. Where numerous art colleges throughout the country have lost their specialist identity and have been merged with other educational establishments, Plymouth College of Art is an independent art College and is flourishing. The College is proud of its long history and specialist art College culture and status. It allows us to focus on the essence of strong vocational art and design through the highly specialist with excellently resourced studios and workshops dedicated to creative experimentation. The College has a strong complementary balance of both Higher Education and Further Education. In addition, there is a strong strategy in place to support creative businesses and industries and the College s work with schools and local communities is also strong. The College offers a wide range of National Diplomas, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Extended Foundation Degrees (Level 0), A Level Suite, Foundation Degrees, Honours Degree top-ups and post-graduate provision. There are appropriately 2,500 enrolments and over 230 staff.

5 Terms & Conditions and Staff Benefits The following are terms and conditions of employment you can expect if you are successful in your application. Salary The starting salary for all new employees is normally at the first point within the salary scale. Salary progression to the next point will be awarded if you meet or significantly achieve your performance appraisal priorities and are payable on the anniversary of your performance appraisal (final) meeting and will be at the manager s recommendation. Salaries are paid on the 25 th of the month directly into a bank or building society account. When the 25 th falls on a weekend payments are made on the last working day before this date. Pension Scheme The College is able to offer membership of the Local Government and Teachers Pension Schemes. Both are contributory schemes; employees are required to make contributions from their pensionable pay, in addition the College also makes contributions. You will automatically become a member of the scheme, if you do not wish to join the scheme you must opt out of the scheme after commencement. Occupational Health Questionnaire All appointments are subject to Occupational Health being satisfied regarding an individuals medical fitness and you will required to complete an online pre employment medical questionnaire at offer stage. Disclosure and Barring Service As part of the offer process, all new employees are required to undertake an on-line clearance check through the Disclosure and Barring Service, the College will also undertake a List 99 check on successful applicants. Applicants must declare on their application form any information concerning any convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings that are not protected (i.e. filtered out) as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013). The amendments to the Exceptions Order provide that certain spent convictions and cautions are 'protected' and are not subject to disclosure to employers, and cannot be taken into account. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the Disclosure and Barring Service website. Further information can also be found on the Nacro website. Holiday Entitlement Annual leave entitlement is between 25 and 30 days per annum for business support staff (dependant on the type of contract offered). 35 days for academic staff. In both cases these days are pro rata if the post is proportional or part time.
6 Vacation Period The College has efficiency closure days over the Christmas period, plus the statutory bank holiday entitlement. The exact length of the closure days may vary each year; this is in addition to the annual leave entitlement detailed above. Probationary Period All new appointments are subject to a 6-month or 12-month probationary period (dependant if the contract is business support or academic). Healthcare Scheme Following employment of 12 months, the College is pleased to offer an additional employee benefit of an employer paid cash plan scheme.. The scheme allows employee to get cash back towards healthcare bills, including dental, optical, health screening, specialist consultancy, acupuncture etc. Those employees with less than 12 months service will benefit from locally provided schemes such as counselling and optical assistance. Learning and Teaching The College operates an annual performance appraisal scheme which may highlight any training and development needs. Employees will have the opportunity to undertake any courses offered by the College or external events where they are relevant to the role and subject to the business needs and objectives of the College. Relocation Expenses Reasonable relocation expenses will be paid in accordance with the College procedures for successful candidates. 7 Useful Information Short-listing and Interviews Candidates will be short-listed using the completed application form by independent panel members. The College is recognised as a two tick ( ) symbol employer, we guaranteed to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the advertised post, applicants will be considered on their merits. You will be notified in writing, if you have been selected for interview, stating the location, time, date, panel members and if applicable a presentation or test. The College may request that you attend a 2 nd interview if applicable. Applicants will be informed in writing as soon as possible if they have not been successful at interview. Interview Expenses The College will reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket expenses for candidates travelling long distances who are selected for interview (up to a maximum of 100). However if an offer of employment is refused without an acceptable explanation interview expenses may not be reimbursed. Parking There are limited parking facilities available at the College; staff can opt to purchase a car parking space for a monthly fee, however these spaces are limited and allocation is not guaranteed. There are car parks adjacent to the College with an efficient park and ride scheme into the City Centre. The College has designated facilities for bicycle and motorcycle parking. Public Transport The College is located only a short distance from the city centre, bus station and train station (Plymouth). The College is located on main bus routes. College Facilities Create Cafe is an excellent, reasonably priced facility run by an outside provider, and is located in the main building.
