ROLE PURPOSE Lecturers/Senior Lecturers Lecturers/Senior Lecturers * We wish to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance. The postholder will play a key role in the development and delivery of new Accounting and Finance programmes, whilst making a contribution to existing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. This post presents an exciting opportunity to be in at the early stages of a major programme development. Applicants should be professionally qualified (CCAB or equivalent) and have a higher degree in the area of accounting and finance; and preferably have experience of teaching in the Higher Education sector. Candidates with commercial, industrial, public sector or research experience are particularly welcome. 6. BACKGROUND INFORMATION 1

2 University of Chester is based on a 30-acre campus close to the historic City of Chester. It was established by Sir William Gladstone in 1839 as a Church of England foundation and has a long record of enterprise and innovation in offering diverse programmes of study to an increasing student population, currently numbering 9,000. It recruits well locally, nationally and internationally. It has a secure financial base, a good reputation for quality in academic provision and support services, and recognition for providing a high level of student care. In 2002 the University assimilated the Higher Education activities of Warrington Collegiate Institute, and the School gained a range of undergraduate programmes taught at the University s Padgate Campus in Warrington. The University offers a wide range of combined subject, single subject and specialised first-degree programmes, postgraduate Masters degree courses and research degrees, and a range of specialised vocationallybased courses. Most courses are based on a single-site campus ten minutes walk from Chester city centre, where the University offers its students and staff excellent facilities in a pleasant and tranquil setting. The Chester Business School is located in the Rigg Building, two minutes walk from the Main Campus. All lecturers are encouraged to adopt a range of teaching styles and to develop innovative techniques for learning, especially as regards large-group teaching and student-managed learning, and use of the Intranet. The University is keen to strengthen its research profile and offers a number of doctoral bursaries annually. Staff are encouraged to further their own research work, and to undertake research degrees where appropriate. Chester Business School The Chester Business School is in the Faculty of Business, Enterprise and Lifelong Learning and has a key role to play in the economic and social development of the subregion, in contributing to meeting the training needs of local employers and in helping to provide an appropriately and well-trained workforce. To this end Chester Business School has, for a number of years, been progressively developing relevant programmes of study. Chester Business School consists of three broad subject groups: Business and Strategy; Marketing Tourism and Events Management; Finance and Human Resource Management which are responsible for the delivery of a range of business, management, marketing and tourism courses on both Chester and Warrington campuses. These courses include both undergraduate degree and postgraduate qualifications, and the scope and size of the School s portfolio is planned to grow significantly over the next five years. This post will be situated in the Finance and Human Resource Management Subject Group which was created in August 2008 to reflect the School desire to develop programmes in these subject disciplines. The Section currently has 10 staff that contribute modules to a range of single and combined honours undergraduate programmes in the Business School, including the School s MBA programmes and MSc in Management. We plan to develop a new undergraduate Accounting and Finance degree and an MSc in International Finance over the next year. The post holder will 2

3 make a significant contribution to the development of, and teaching on these programmes. 7. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Contribute to the development of the curriculum and delivery of accounting and finance modules/programmes; Lecture on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Chester Business School; Supervise dissertations to undergraduate honours degree level and Masters degree level; Contribute to course developments at undergraduate and masters degree level, and for professional qualifications more broadly within the School; Contribute to the development of Schools research and development initiatives, including consultancy; Share in the development and delivery of the Chester Business School strategic plan; Share in the administrative responsibilities of the department; Take the role of Personal Academic Tutor for a group of students for both academic and personal guidance and associated administration. 8. APPOINTMENT CRITERIA We are seeking a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer who meets the following criteria: Qualifications An honours degree (or equivalent qualification); A professional accountancy qualification (CCAB or equivalent) A higher degree is desirable, either taught or through research, in an appropriate field, or the willingness to work towards a Higher Degree; A formal teaching qualification Teaching experience/qualities Good communication and presentation skills, well able to enthuse students; Undergraduate teaching experience; Experience of curriculum development, programme management or allied experience The ability to use varied approaches to teaching and learning; An ability to be a professional role model. General Industrial, commercial or public service management experience; Sound and efficient administrative and organisational skills; Research experience in an appropriate field is desirable; Experience of curriculum development is desirable; Good inter-personal skills, with the ability to work well within a team; A willingness to be flexible with a positive attitude to change. 3

4 9. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The University requires new teaching staff to participate in In-Service training in teaching and learning. The training is offered within a modular structure and can lead to postgraduate awards in Higher Education. Credit for prior learning can be obtained within the programmes. All lecturers are expected to seek membership of the Higher Education Academy. 10. APPLICATION PROCEDURES An application form must be completed. 6 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CHESTER BUSINESS SCHOOL LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE (OR JOB SHARE MAY BE POSSIBLE) SALARY SCALE TSR 3 TSR 5, 30,594-43,622 per annum. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Permanent contracts will be offered to those candidates who possess both a higher degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification/higher Education Academy membership. A successful candidate who lacks the later will be offered a fixed term contract, pending fulfilment of these conditions. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. CRB CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo a CRB check before an appointment can be made. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an occupational health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University is an admitted body to the Teachers Pension Scheme. All academic staff are eligible for membership of the scheme, and upon appointment, will be asked to indicate whether or not they wish to join the scheme.
