Please remember that full band uniform includes black socks! Faculty Concert: May 11 This semester s Faculty Concert will feature all of our bands performing their eisteddfod pieces. Please see the attached timetable for arrival and departure times. We are dividing up the concert in to thirds with junior, senior and alumni bands all featuring throughout the evening. This will allow the junior students to leave once they have played. Junior students who wish to stay for the entire concert are welcome, but must be in LPAC at all times. Students are not to be wandering around the school building or grounds for any reason. The music teachers need to be inside LPAC and cannot provide supervision outside of LPAC. The year 9 and 10 band students are strongly encouraged to stay to listen to the Ginninderra Wind Orchestra and Twilight Jazz Band to support our alumni students and listen to some great music. All musicians should wear full band uniform. The main school building will not be open, so students will not be able to access their lockers. Please get organised before you leave school that day. A gold coin donation from audience members would be greatly appreciated. The music staff would like to thank our band families and the rest of the school staff, whose continued support of our students and the Band Program is highly valued. This term promises to be a very exciting one with many great events and performances. The first of the three big events this term is the Faculty Concert on 11 May. The Australian National Eisteddfod which begins on Thursday May 21 with the Jazz Band section will be held at LPAC. Both of our Jazz Bands will be performing at this event so please come along and show your support. On Friday May 22 our Alumni Concert Band, The Ginninderra Wind Orchestra will be performing at Llewellyn Hall in the Open A Grade section. Then on Sunday May 24 our concert bands will be performing at Llewellyn Hall in the Concert Bands of the Australian National Eisteddfod. Finally we have a number of student rock bands entered into the Rock Bands Australian National Eisteddfod which will be held at the Woden CIT on Thursday May 28. All the students have been putting in a lot of hard work so please try to be in the audience to show your support. The last big event this term is the Lyneham High school production of the musical, Cats. The season will begin June 24 and run through to June 27. This promises to be a fantastic production and it is great to see the high level of enthusiasm and excitement that the students have been able to maintain. All in all it is going to be an exciting but busy term and we wish all our students, their families and staff the best of luck.

6 CONCERT FOR FEEDER PRIMARY SCHOOLS Last week the Year 10 Concert Band hosted a concert in LPAC for the year 6 students from our feeder primary schools. The students performed very well with Rising Dragons being a particularly rousing highlight. Special thanks go to our year 7 presenters who did a marvelous job emceeing the event. The concert was well received by the year 6 students and we are looking forward to them joining our ranks next year. Year 10 Band with the year 7 presenters (stage left) ASSESSMENT Band Moderation In week three of this term all band students will be required to submit their band video performance assessment task. They are to do this by providing a thumb drive or CD with a video of their performance that they produced at home or they can submit it straight to google classroom. Students without access to a suitable device may use the ipads during lunchtime. Students requiring support with the technology should speak with one of their band teachers. Students are required to perform specific excerpts from a piece or pieces of their band music that was identified by their conductor last term. Students may also have to perform technical requirements such as scales or percussion rudiments as set by their conductor. The conductor will review the video evidence and marry this with their knowledge of the students work throughout the semester using an assessment rubric. The results of the review process will inform the students' end of semester reports. Planning for the tours is also well underway. If you have not yet paid your first deposit the costs are as follows: $350 10CB and 9CB; $200 8CB; $100 BCB and 7CB. This deposit needs to be paid ASAP as it was due in late March. BAND UNIFORM The band uniform consists of black trousers, shoes and socks (no coloured stripes or logos), blue band embroidered polo top and band cap. The polo top and cap are available from the canteen. Caps are not required for the photos, but will be worn at outdoor performances. New to our uniform is a zip up blue band hoodie. Students attending the Melbourne tour will be required to wear this at performances. SENIOR & INTERMEDIATE JAZZ BANDS Both jazz bands will be continuing with their eisteddfod preparation this term. Both bands are now rehearsing from 8:00am till 8:45am on Tuesday morning. The last rehearsal for both jazz bands will be during week 7 to allow for staff to focus on this year s musical production of Cats and will resume rehearsals in Term 3. MUSICAL PRODUCTION CATS The musical staff would like to thank everyone involved with this year s musical production for their amazing work over the first term of this year. Tickets will go on sale soon with the first allocation being for the cast. Rehearsals this term will be on Tuesday till 5:30pm and Thursday will be TBA. At this stage we are not rehearsing on Thursdays but this will commence soon so please keep the afternoon free. The band will rehearse at 8:00am on Wednesday mornings.

8 INSTRUMENTS The initial contact for problems with school instruments is the Band Coordinator Tim Bowyer. The instrument that you are allocated will be for you to use for the entire year. If a repair is required and your instrument is sent away, you need to ask a teacher for a temporary loan until yours is returned. If anything happens to the instrument through lack of care, or if you lose it, you will be liable for the repairs or replacement. It is recommended that you insure the instrument. The Band Storeroom is opened at 8.30am and again at 8.45am for students to deposit their instruments prior to home group. Instruments may be collected at 3.05pm. Students are reminded that the storeroom is not a meeting area. At no stage should instruments be left outside of the storeroom (e.g. in the corridor). If, for some reason, the storeroom has not been opened home group, students should take their instruments to class, then deposit them in the storeroom later in the day. The storage of instruments in school bags is not recommended. Only band students are allowed in the storeroom, so please ask friends to wait outside. The storeroom must be a safe place for your valuable instruments, so if you see anyone tampering with equipment please let us know. Students should never help themselves to an unused instrument or borrow items from an instrument case. Small items such as reeds, oils and guitar leads should be kept in the student s school bag, not their instrument case. COMMITMENT TO PERFORMANCES It is important that students and their families are aware that each of our bands and ensembles are performing groups. As such, the music staff expects that every effort is made to attend all rehearsals and performances. If it is known in advance that a student is unable to attend a performance, please notify the teacher of the group ASAP so that a replacement player can be organised. An example is when a student may be absent from school during the day and has a performance that evening. We are so very grateful when a message comes through to let us know whether or not the student will be attending the evening performance. We do understand, however, that emergencies occasionally arise and always appreciate a call to let us know that the student is safe. Contact details for your child's teacher are on page one of this newsletter. It is a good idea to Cc Debbie Masling into any communication for absences in case the teacher also is absent. IMPORTANT!! COMMUNICATION WITH FAMILIES This is a reminder that if you have not received an from your child s band conductor then please contact him or her. The contacts are on page 1 of this newsletter. Please remember to update your address if it changes through the year.
