2 1 SOLUTION OVERVIEW The ITS Remote Desktop Services Server provides a full Windows client environment for MAC, Linux, Unix users and everyone who needs access to any of the application that are installed on the Server. If you have any questions or problems using the server please contact Service Desk on ex5050 or its-service@vuw.ac.nz. 2 INSTALLED APPLICATIONS: Office 2013 Visio 2013 Project 2013 Adobe Reader configured for no updates Adobe Flash configured for no updates Java 8u45 - configured for no updates Vmware Service Manager (VSM) wrapper components The users will use this host to access the following systems too: o Banner o Cognos o iproc o Finance Oracle systems 3 LIMITATIONS The server only allows local user profiles: server doesn t allow you to load your PC roaming profile (if you have one), this is to ensure the resources on the server aren t taken up with loading large desktops and profiles 1GB Limit on Local User Profiles Disabled Control Panel Items Removed (Restricted access) to Administrative Tools Remove (Restrict access) PowerShell and Server Manager shortcut Limitation on File explorer configuration o Manage item from the File Explorer context menu has been removed o Security tab on files and folders has been removed Registry Modification has been disabled Time limit for disconnected sessions has been set to 4 days Time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions has been set to 1 day The default action of the power button on the Start menu has been set to log off to avoid accidental shut downs. 3 4 HOW TO CONNECT TO THE SERVER 4.1 From MAC clients Open Microsoft Remote Desktop (Finder Go menu -> Applications) Click on the new button Fill in the required fields in the General tab Click the red circle (top left corner) to close Edit window Double click the newly created Remote Desktop connection to make a connection to the Remote Desktop Server Click the Continue button when the Verify Certificate window appears Enter your username and password (please make sure you put STAFF\ before your usual username) Page 3

4 4.2 From Linux Clients Open Terminal, and type rdesktop remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz (without the quotes ): In the subsequent window, choose Other User : Page 4

5 4.2.3 Enter your VUW staff credentials: You are now logged in to the terminal server: Page 5

6 4.2.5 Just a couple of quick hints to use rdesktop 1 To change the remote window size, experiment with the rdesktop -g switch to find what best suits you. For instance: o rdesktop -g 95% remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz o Will produce a remote window that takes 95 percent of your screen o o To save you from having to choose Other User as in step 2 above, you can pass your staff username via the rdesktop command like this: rdesktop u staff\\username remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz (Note the double backslashes above) Putting these two switches together will create a usable windows space that is easily connected: rdesktop g 95% -u staff\\yourusername remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz 1 Has been tested on rdesktop on RHEL 6.7 and on rdesktop on Centos 6.6 Page 6

7 4.3 From Windows clients Open Remote Desktop Connection (Star menu\all Programs\Accessories) Type remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz in the Computer field and Enter your username in the User name field (please make sure you type STAFF\ before your usual username) Page 7

8 4.3.3 In the Local Resources tab you can add (redirect) your local devices (Printers) to your remote desktop session Click Connect Enter your password and click OK Page 8

9 5 HOW TO ADD PRINTERS By default you should have all your local printers redirected from the computer you are logged in from. However, if you need to add a VUW network printer you can do it, following the below steps: Click on Start menu\devices and Printers: Click on Add a printer: Click on Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth Printer Page 9

10 5.1.4 If the required printer does not come up on the search list, then click on The printer that I want isn`t listed, then Next. (Otherwise you can just select the required printer on the list and click Next) Select Find a printer in the directory, based on location Page 10

11 5.1.6 In the Name box type the name of the printer you wish to set up, for instance if the printer is in the Kirk Building room 810, its name is going to be the format KK P and click Find Now Double-click on the name within the Search results, decide if you want this as the default printer, then click Finish. 12 6 WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED USING THE REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION Click on the Start button, and select Log Off. This will terminate your Remote Desktop session and save any settings you have configured (including your Favourites in Internet Explorer), and then shuts down the Remote Desktop Connection application. 7 HELP SERVICE DESK If you have any issues or need help to configure your Linux/Mac/Windows machine please contact ITS Service Desk: Phone or extn 5050 for internal staff its-service@vuw.ac.nz Page 12
