The Career Mentor Scheme will allow you to forge a supportive ongoing relationship with an industry expert. You ll gain access to their knowledge, experience, advice and networks giving you a real-world advantage in your transition to the workforce. What is the Career Mentor Scheme? The Career Mentor Scheme matches you with an industry professional, providing you with the opportunity to gain information and advice straight from the real world. What do mentors do? A mentor is a person who has knowledge, skills, information, and experience in their chosen industry and is willing and able to share these in order to help the mentee s professional growth. Mentors prepare students for work after graduation by providing them with an appreciation of the workplace culture and the challenges of the profession. Mentors offer their time to provide support and may assume the role of a career coach, confidant, counsellor, correspondent, consultant or coach. A mentor also acts as an adviser and resource person. What are the time commitments? Contact time is a negotiation between both parties and will vary depending on the needs of the student and the availability of all involved. As a general guide, mentors and students make contact for approximately one hour each fortnight; including face to face meetings, workplace visits, s, telephone calls or facilitating work exposure within the industry. Is this work experience NO THIS IS NOT A WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM. Mentors are not required to provide students with work experience, however if this does eventuate there is an insurance policy in place to cover you while you are in their workplace. Am I eligible to participate in the Scheme? Yes if you: have a current QUT enrolment. completed more than 96 credit points in an undergraduate degree, or are a postgraduate student, have a GPA over 4.0, are not an exchange student.

2 Where can I find further information about the Career Mentor Scheme? Available Information Technology Mentors Although the Scheme has officially closed for Semester One, 2013, we still have some capacity for final year, or penultimate year Law students to be matched with available industry mentors. There are limited places available and these mentors will be allocated to the first suitable students who apply for the Scheme. You may read the mentor profiles below and apply for a specific mentor, or list the mentors you are interested in being matched with in order of preference. Please note that Mentor 10 is based in Singapore and Mentor 11 is based in Armidale. All of these mentors are available for distance mentoring. Mentor number 5 is based in Seattle but will return to Brisbane in July. How do I apply? 1. the Career Mentor Scheme Coordinator at mentor@qut.edu.au to express your interest and be put on the list. YOU NEED TO DO THIS TO ALERT US TO YOUR REGISTRATION FORM. 2. THEN IMMEDIATLY: Login in or create an account on the CareerHub database. Register as a STUDENT. Visit 3. Select the Career Mentor Scheme Link. 4. Complete the 2013 Career Mentor Scheme Student Registration form and submit. This form is available at You will receive an auto back to say that the Scheme has officially closed, please ignore that ! 5. You will then be required to read the Career Mentor Scheme Student Information Booklet (available at and complete a briefing worksheet and return to the Career Mentor Scheme Coordinator, this will be sent to you after you submit your registration form if you are selected to be matched with one of our available mentors. Students who are already registered in the Scheme were required to complete a one hour briefing session, this worksheet is in lieu of this session. Once selected students have completed and returned their worksheet they will be matched with a mentor.

Mentor Number 3 Position title: Key Account Manager Employer: SAS Professional Interests: Enterprise Systems, Financial Management Info Systems, Business Intelligence Systems, Sales. I believe I have a broad range of technical skills, and seek to utilise these skills in the bigger picture. I find it easy to get along with people and am pro-active when the time requires. I have a strong interest in networking, security and virtualisation, and wish to pursue a career in a senior or technical lead style role, having previously consulted on technical projects with clients. My domain experience includes the Travel, e-commerce, Cyber/Credit Security and Insurance industries, with specific expertise in Airline, Hotel, Car Rental, Cruise and Airport/Immigration/Logistics/Border Security Operations. Projects I have managed have also provided insights into supporting domains such as e-commerce, cyber/credit security and insurance.
