7 Metro Round kicks off a big year of TAC Cup football Having been in the role of General Manager at AFL Victoria for six months now, I am really looking forward to the season ahead for both the TAC Cup and Peter Jackson VFL. The standard of the two competitions is exceptional, and when you look at the associated programs such as the Vic Metro, Country and VFL Academies which support both comps, you can see why they both provide such a wellrespected pathway to the AFL. This was clearly evident at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft and Rookie Draft, with so many TAC Cup and VFL players selected by AFL clubs. TAC Cup and VFL clubs continue to work hand in hand with each other and develop strong relationships, be it through shared facilities, coaching development or 23rd man alignments. Moving from the TAC Cup into the VFL is very much a genuine pathway, so with that in mind we have combined the TAC cup and VFL Records into the one publication so that you, the reader, can be across both competitions. In the coming weeks when the VFL season starts you will see a mixture of content throughout the Record including results, fixtures, revised stats pages, and plenty of articles and news items for TAC Cup, VFL and its associated Development League. The TAC Cup competition has changed immensely since I played in it all those years ago. Expectations on players have increased dramatically from what was a couple of training sessions a week to a greater focus on personal development. Back in the day development used to be just football related, but now the TAC Cup is equipping players with a raft of skills that they can use in all aspects of their life. Continuing the focus on player development, AFL Victoria has amended the rulings around 19 year old players in the competition from this season onwards. Previously clubs could play a maximum of three 19 year olds in the one TAC Cup match. This has now been increased to five. A number of factors can contribute to why a TAC Cup club might put a 19 year old on their list. The player may have had a serious injury through their initial two years where they missed the majority of a season. They may be a convert from another sport such as basketball, cricket or athletics and show significant potential, or they may just need a little bit longer in the TAC Cup environment to develop. AFL recruiters are keen to see this change, with Nathan Drummond (Murray Bushrangers) showing just how beneficial the 19 year old program can be. Overlooked at the end of 2013, he was selected by Richmond at pick 52 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft after a stand out additional season with the Bushrangers and Vic Country. Drummond has gone on to play NAB Challenge games for the Tigers and put his hand up for senior selection. It s an exciting time of year for all of the new players getting ready for their first TAC Cup game. Best of luck to all players and support staff this weekend and welcome to all of the family members, friends and supporters. Enjoy Metro round! Steven Reaper AFL Victoria General Manager Q & A SECTION Which TAC Cup draftees have impressed you in the NAB Challenge so far? Paddy McCartin (Geelong Falcons) has really impressed me. I was fortunate enough to be sitting with Paddy at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft when he was r ead out as the number one pick. He has taken the move to AFL and the pressure of being the A number one pick in his stride and is doing really well. Also, he hasn t played a NAB Challenge match but from all reports Jake Lever (Calder Cannons) has made a big impression at the Adelaide Crows, in particular his competitive nature. The Crows are making sure Jake is right after he missed the TAC Cup season last year with a knee injury, but I am looking forward to seeing him make his mark when he does get his chance. 03

9 News A number of AFL players returned to celebrate 20 years of Calder Cannons 20 Years of Cannons 2014 marked Calder Cannons 20th year in the TAC Cup competition. The Cannons milestone season culminated recently in a celebration of the club s rich history and achievements over those 20 years with the inaugural Calder Cannons Hall of Fame night. A number of past players and long term staff members were recognised in the first group of inductees. The club also announced a Team of the First 20 Years which was selected from its AFL draftees and rookies. With over 120 players drafted into the AFL since the clubs inception, it was a tough job for the selectors to narrow it down to just one team. The inaugural Calder Cannons Hall of Fame inductees were: Ross Monaghan: Talent Manager Phil Dunk: Trainer 1995-present Robert Hyde: Coach , 3 TAC Cup Premierships Darren Milburn: Cannons Games: 18; AFL Games: 292; Local Club: Kilmore FC; 2007 All Australian; AFL Premiership 2007 & 2009 James Kelly: Cannons Games: 31; AFL Games: 256; Local Club: Sunbury FC; 2011 All Australian; AFL Premierships 2007, 2009 & 2011 Jude Bolton: Cannons Games: 24; AFL Games: 325; Local Club: Aberfeldie FC; AFL Premierships 2005 & 2012 Dane Swan: Cannons Games: 18; AFL Games: 236; Local Club: Westmeadows FC; All Australian 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013; Brownlow Medal 2011; AFL Premiership 2010; Collingwood FC B&F 2008, 2009 & 2010 Jason Johnson: Cannons Games: 11; AFL Games: 184; Local Club: Kilmore FC; All Australian 2001; Essendon FC B&F 2001 & 2005; AFL Premiership 2000 Ryan O Keefe: Cannons Games: 35; AFL Games: 286; Local Club: Strathmore FC; Sydney FC B&F 2009; All Australian ; Norm Smith Medal 2012; AFL Premiership 2005 & 2012 Paul Chapman: Cannons Games: 38; AFL Games: 271; Local Club: Nth Coburg Saints FC; Geelong FC B&F 2006; All Australian 2009 & 2010; Norm Smith Medal 2009; AFL Premierships 2007, 2009 & 2011 Full on footy for Torin Baker Western Jets coach Torin Baker has become a full time coach with a restructuring of the Western Jets head coach position to include additional pathway development. In a partnership between AFL Victoria and the Maribyrnong Sports Academy, Baker s new coaching role oversees the AFL talented player development pathway within the Sports Academy and the western metropolitan region. The dual role provides a great development opportunity for Baker, enabling him to hone his coaching skills in a different environment to the TAC Cup competition. Players involved in the Maribyrnong Sports Academy will benefit from greater contact hours and access to a coach within the school environment. Past students at the school include North Melbourne s Kayne Turner, Gold Coast Suns Peter Wright and Carlton s Dillion Viojo-Rainbow. 05

Over half of the squad is comprised of 2014 TAC Cup graduates, including three TAC Cup Team of the Year selections (Rowan Marshall, Alex Urban, Taylor Grace) and three TAC Cup club best and fairest winners (Luke Hannon, Sam Switkowski, Alex Urban). The Academy gives these players the opportunity to be part of AFL Victoria s high performance program, AFL Victoria VFL Academy coach Darren Flanigan said. They have all been selected due to their potential, and we will work with these players to further develop their game across the year along in addition to the support they receive at the own VFL club. The academy will meet for the first time in April with an emphasis on creating an individual development plan for each member. 06

11 AFL Vic News NAB Auskick celebrates 20 years Australian Football kicking goals for the community A landmark study into the infl uence and impact that local football clubs have on their communities provides a resounding endorsement of the many social and economic benefits that fl ow from Australian Football. The Latrobe University research project, conducted in partnership with AFL Victoria and the AFL, found that community football clubs generate a range of positive effects for local communities, including heightened levels of physical and mental wellbeing, social interaction and economic activity. Regardless of where you live in Victoria, or how often you are involved in a football club each week, you are likely to experience greater social connectedness, well-being and physical and mental health than if you were not involved. These benefits apply to all club participants, including players, coaches, volunteers and supporters. Significantly the study found that for every dollar spent on a community football club, at least $4.40 is returned in social value. A football club s reach is significant and extends beyond the players, coaches, administrators and volunteers within the club; for every one player, football clubs reach 10 people in their community. The 20th year of NAB AFL Auskick has been launched in Wodonga with Shane Crawford and a couple of home-grown stars making an appearance. Former Murray Bushrangers and now North Melbourne footballers Jack Zeibell and Kayne Turner helped kick off what is expected to be another huge year of Australia s favourite underage sporting program. NAB AFL Auskick has helped hundreds of thousands of boys and girls take their first steps in Australian Football over the past 20 years with a number of current TAC Cup players having their first football experience through their local Auskick centre. Youth Girls Academies shine in Gippsland Victoria s best young female footballers took centre stage in Gippsland recently for the inaugural TAC Youth Girls Academies Carnival. The two-day round-robin series was the culmination of a gruelling pre-season for the six Victorian academies and provided the girls a chance to test themselves against their peers. The Carnival also acted as an important selection trial for the Vic Metro and Vic Country teams ahead of the AFL Youth Girls National Championships in May. After a summer spent developing their skills in fortnightly training sessions and undertaking the TAC s off-field development program, the girls arrived in Churchill eager to show their wares out in the middle. And the action didn t disappoint. The Calder Cannons were ultimately crowned champions after maintaining an undefeated record over the weekend. AFL Victoria Female Football Development Manager Chyloe Kurdas was extremely impressed with the standard of competition. The final game of the weekend was between the Calder Cannons and the Dandenong Stingrays, who were both undefeated, and the intensity in which it was played was incredible, Kurdas said. Every one of the six academies impressed though throughout, with the improvement in so many of the girls a highlight. 07

12 New kids on the block Round 1 of the TAC Cup is almost like the first day of school for many. Players are equally nervous and excited about putting on their uniform for the first time while parents bursting with pride watch on as their sons take the field. But it s not just the first year players that will go through the full range of emotions this weekend. There are two new head coaches and two new talent managers about to get their first real taste of TAC Cup game day in their new roles. It s been a busy off season, with major staff movements affecting four of the six metro clubs. Calder Cannons coach Andrew Jago made the tough call to leave the Cannons due to work commitments. It was almost a fairy tale ending for Jago as he took his team to the 2014 Grand Final but they were overrun on the day. Oakleigh Chargers talent manager Mark Smart however did go out on a high. His boys were the victors over the Cannons in last year s Grand Final, giving Smart his second TAC Cup premiership from his four years as talent manager. Smart has taken on a role in St Kilda Football Club s recruiting department as an analyst. Sandringham Dragons loss is Melbourne FC aligned Casey Scorpions gain. Justin Plapp, who coached the Dragons for three years, will combine coaching in the VFL with an AFL development role at Melbourne. Eastern Ranges talent manager and former AFL head coach Mark Neeld was lured back into the AFL system. Passionate about player development, Neeld is now Head of Player Development at Essendon. They are some big shoes to fi ll, but the new kids on the block are well credentialed and more than capable of tackling the challenges that lay ahead. Andrew Johnston has stepped into the coaching role at Calder, after spending time as a development coach with the Gold Coast Suns in the AFL and an assistant with Casey Scorpions VFL. Johnston is no stranger to the Cannons organisation, prior to moving to the Gold Coast he spent a number of years there as development coach. He has been kept on his toes, getting to know around 90 players in the Cannons program during preseason, but is enjoying being back at Highgate. Hopefully some of my experiences that I have achieved in my four years with the Suns I can bring in to not only the Cannons but the TAC Cup, Johnston said. Looking forward to the year ahead the challenge is there for the Cannons playing group to set their own history. If Eastern Ranges have a new talent manager in

13 New Calder Cannons coach Andrew Johnston I can improve them as they go along throughout the year then I have done my role. Craig Notman brings an interesting mixture of experience to the Oakleigh Chargers talent manager position. Notman has worked as a talent coordinator for the AFL, football operations manager for Melbourne Football Club and an accredited player agent for RCM sports. With 69 players on the Chargers 2015 list, the second biggest in the competition Notman will be busy. Putting faces to the names of players and staff has been one of his biggest challenges. Mick and Maddy in the office have been a great help so far, all of the people around the club have been terrific in opening their arms to me, accepting me and helping me out, Notman said. The big thing working in this kind of footy is to see improvement in all of the boys, seeing them grow as footballers and young men and then what happens from there we will see how we go. New Sandringham Dragon head coach Jeremy Barnard knows what it takes to win, a triple premiership captain of East Perth in the WAFL, he transitioned into coaching at the end of playing career. Barnard then coached EDFL side Strathmore to a premiership, and spent time as an assistant coach in the VFL before taking on an assistant role at the Dragons. Already knowing the players and inner workings of the club has been an advantage for Barnard, who faces a tough job when it comes to list management. With around half of his list also playing private school football, he goes from a list of 72 available players to 35 for ten weeks of the year. It s a challenge to upskill the players that may not be in the top 50 but are going to be playing in those ten weeks, Barnard said. It s a bit of a juggling act but Sandringham have coped with it since their inceptions so it s just part and parcel of being the Sandringham coach. Len Villani has stepped into the Eastern Ranges talent manager role and is no stranger to the TAC Cup, spending six years as football manager at Calder Cannons. Villani has also spent time as a development manager for the North West region. I ve been around for a fair while now and probably done most jobs that you can do at a TAC Cup footy club, from the humble beginnings of doing the stats to footy administrative work, Villani said. I have been working towards it (the talent manager position) for a while now. I am looking forward to the opportunity. The TAC Cup family welcomes the new kids on the block. 09

15 Vic Metro Academy Maribyrnong College was the venue for the 2015 AFL Victoria Vic Metro Academy Induction Day. The Academy squad, proudly supported by Dairy Australia, gathered together recently to learn more about the demands of the Academy program and to prepare both the players and parents for the year ahead. Players have been selected into the Academy due to their capacity to play in the National Championships and by exhibiting draftable qualities. AFL Victoria High Performance Manager Anton Grbac said that Induction day signifies the official start to Vic Metro s under 18 Academy program. It s a program that has been incredibly successful, winning 15 National Championships since 1990 and producing 10 Larke Medallists (Best Division 1 player) the most recent being Christian Petracca in In a further endorsement of the program, 25 Vic Metro Academy members were drafted into the AFL in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft. Once again David Flood will coach the Academy, with a number of assistant coaches supporting him. In 2015 one of those assistants will be former Western Bulldog Steve Wallis who played 261 AFL games. Wallis is more than familiar with the Vic Metro Academy, his son Mitch went through the program captaining Vic Metro in the 2010 National Championships. Not every player has the luxury of calling on a father with AFL experience though. The Academy induction day provides parents with a wealth of knowledge so they can support their sons as they strive to make it in the AFL. Players and parents learned firsthand what it takes to make it onto an AFL list from someone who works in recruiting. This year West Coast Eagles Recruiting Manager Rohan O Brien addressed the group, explaining exactly what AFL clubs are looking for and explaining how the recruiting departments work. Induction day also provided the players the opportunity to introduce themselves personally to the greater AFL recruiting network, with representatives from all clubs in attendance. It was a comprehensive day that aims to give the Academy members a head start in their preparation. The Academy will train together regularly with the first Vic Metro National Championships squad announcements to be made in early April. Vic Metro face arch rivals Vic Country in Round 1 of the NAB AFL U18 Championships on Sunday May

26 Fit and ready for the season ahead All 12 TAC Cup teams have been put through their paces at the TAC Cup fitness testing day held recently at Maribyrnong Secondary College. With the help of DraftStar, over 500 players completed the 20m sprint, standing and running vertical jump, agility and beep test on the day. Educational aspects also formed a large part of the day with all players involved in sessions that discussed TAC Cup players accountability when it comes to Respect and Responsibility, Racial Vilification and Anti-Doping. These sessions, delivered by experts in the field cover the same content that all AFL players learn. The hard work each club has put in over pre-season was evident in the exceptional results on the day. The highlight was definitely the Rouse twins (Zac and Jordan), with the whole gym stopping to watch the boys from Dandenong Stingrays run side by side. Both smashed out an astonishing on the Beep Test. They were just short of the record set a few years ago by Daniel Jackson (Gippsland Power). North Ballarat Rebels can claim to be team agile, with four players finishing in the top ten agility test results. Expect to see Fraser Pearce (Oakleigh Chargers), Christian Buykx-Smith (Gippsland Power) and Tom Templeton (Oakleigh Chargers) fl ying through the air in season 2015, all finished in the top ten for both the standing and running vertical jump. Player heights were also measured, with Murray Bushranger Kyle Galloway measuring up as the tallest player in the competition in 2015 at 206.3cm. 22

Sealy has replaced Jamie Hepner who after three years in the role has taken up a position in Chicago, USA working for Catapult Sports. Originally from Melbourne Sealy completed his honours degree at ACU Melbourne and then moved to the United States to complete his Masters of Science. 36 Draft Watch We follow TAC Cup and VFL players on their AFL football journey as they attempt to make it in the big league. TAC Cup a proven talent pathway The 2014 NAB AFL Draft once again showed the TAC Cup as being the premium AFL breeding ground, with over half of the draftees coming from TAC Cup clubs and each of the 12 TAC Cup regions represented. 45 TAC Cup players were selected in the 2014 draft, with a further 15 selected as Rookies. Calder Cannons and Sandringham Dragons led the way with 9 draftees, followed by Oakleigh Chargers with 8, Geelong Falcons with 7, Western Jets with 6, 4 each to Dandenong Stingrays, Murray Bushrangers and Northern Knights, 3 to North Ballarat Rebels and 2 each for Bendigo Pioneers, Eastern Ranges and Gippsland Power. Geelong Falcon Patrick McCartin was selected at number one in the draft by St Kilda, the fourth year in a row a TAC Cup player has received that honour following on from Jonathon Patton (Eastern Ranges 2011), Lachie Whitfield (Dandenong Stingrays 2012) and Tom Boyd (Eastern Ranges 2013). Once again a high number of Vic Metro (25) and Country (12) Academy players were drafted, making up 37 of the 45 TAC Cup selections. The worth of AFL Victoria s 19 year old policy was again highlighted with Murray Bushranger Nathan Drummond drafted by Richmond after an additional year in the competition. Anthony Tipungwuti (Gippsland Power) feeling at home in Morwell NAB Challenge Touk Miller (Calder Cannons) playing for Gold Coast Suns A number of these draftees have had their first taste of AFL football, playing in NAB Challenge matches across the country. Jordan De Goey (Oakleigh Chargers) has excited Collingwood fans with his hardness at the contest. Touk Miller (Calder Cannons) has put his hand up for round 1 selection with his pressure acts and work rate in the Gold Coast Suns forward line shining through. Number 1 draft pick Paddy McCartin (Geelong Falcons) has slotted nicely into the St Kilda forward line, grabbing strong marks and slotting through goals just like he did for the Falcons and Vic Country. Homecoming for Power Duo Former Gippsland Power and now Essendon VFL players Aaron Heppell and Anthony Tipungwuti seized a unique opportunity to play for Essendon s AFL team in the NAB Challenge as top up players. Heppell, the younger brother of Bombers star Dyson Heppell, and Tipungwuti felt right at home with Essendon taking on St Kilda at Gippsland Power s home ground in Morwell and the Bombers using Power s rooms. 32
