5 The School of Engineering The Nazarbayev School of Engineering aims to be the leading school of engineering, not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the wider Central Asian region. The School s objective is to ensure that its graduates are prepared to meet the growing demand for flexible professional practitioners in the fields of chemical, mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. Graduates of the School will be innovative and entrepreneurial, adding real value to the design, operation and manufacturing sectors in a global industry. Graduates can expect to be adept project managers, financially literate and excellent communicators practiced in working collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, crossing professional and geographic boundaries. DEGREE PROGRAMS Undergraduate The School of Engineering offers four year Engineering programs in the following disciplines: B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering Nazarbayev University s Mechanical Engineering B.Eng program is a full-time, four year degree program delivered fully in English. The program is designed on the basis of UK-SPEC accreditation requirements of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME). It includes a compulsory 12 ECTS industrial placement and finalization of a final year capstone project. B.Eng in Chemical Engineering Nazarbayev University s Chemical Engineering B.Eng program is a full-time, four year degree program delivered fully in English. The program is designed on the basis of UK-SPEC accreditation requirements of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). It includes a compulsory 12 ECTS industrial placement and finalization of a final year capstone project. B.Eng in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Nazarbayev University s Electrical & Electronic Engineering B.Eng program is a full-time, four year degree program delivered fully in English. The program is designed on the basis of UK-SPEC accreditation requirements of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). It includes a compulsory 12 ECTS industrial placement and finalization of a final year capstone project. B.Eng in Civil Engineering Nazarbayev University s Civil Engineering B.Eng program is a full-time, four year degree program delivered fully in English. The program is designed on the basis of UK-SPEC accreditation requirements of the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM). It includes a compulsory 12 ECTS industrial placement and finalization of a final year capstone project. For all four undergraduate programs, the first cohort will be graduating in Graduate M.Eng in Engineering Management The School of Engineering and Department of Civil Engineering at Nazarbayev University are launching a new Masters program in Engineering Management in the Fall semester of The MEM degree program is a specialized degree program offered by the School of Engineering in partnership with the Graduate School of Business at Nazarbayev University. Students are required to complete 93 ECTS credits which satisfy the requirements stipulated by the Bologna Process and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) for Master s Courses. The aim of the program is to prepare students with the technical skills and business knowledge for the leadership of engineer-related units of enterprise with innovative solutions for complex business problems. The School of Engineering and the School of Science and Technology at Nazarbayev University have launched a new PhD program in Science and Engineering as of the Fall semester of PhD in Biomedical Engineering; PhD in Sustainable Engineering; PhD in Energy Engineering; PhD in Information and Communication Technologies; PhD in Materials Science and Engineering; PhD in Robotics and Mechatronics. 6 The School of Engineering DEPARTMENTS The School of Engineering has set out to deliver high-quality and talented engineers to move the nation forward in its development, by supplying English-based and internationally competitive degree programs. The focus is to support thereby the development of a sustainable and diversified economic sector. Focal areas are found in the support of medical technologies, the development of technologies to enhance the quality of life through clean air, water and waste management, the support of industry in developing industrial automation and the development of advanced materials, and the support of the gas and oil extraction industries, which form one of the pillars of the economic base of Kazakhstan. Research and teaching activities are grouped within the School s four Departments: Mechanical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Chemical Engineering. 7 Professor of Biomedical Engineering JOB DESCRIPTION As Professor at Nazarbayev University, the appointee will report to the Dean of the School and will be responsible for: Research conducting high-quality research in his/her field of expertise and publish such research widely; applying for and attaining research grants and funding as appropriate for his/her field of research; attending relevant international conferences and developing broad networks; mentoring junior faculty and students to develop their research, grant applications and publications; assisting in the development of a research strategy in the relevant Department and School. Teaching teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of his/her expertise; engaging in course and program development when necessary; serving on and chairing Masters and PhD committees as required; encouraging the development of innovative approaches to course design and delivery and ensuring that teaching design and delivery comply with the quality and educational standards and regulations of the Department; challenging thinking, fostering debate and developing the students ability to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking. Academic Leadership performing informal management duties at the level of the Department, the School and the University; fostering the development of a vibrant and productive research culture in his/her field; serving on various committees at the School and University level. Internal/External Engagement developing and maintaining active networks, internally and externally, nationally and internationally; nurturing consultancy and research relationships with commerce, industry and in other external relationships including those with international collaborators, with professional and practitioner bodies, with policy communities, and with government agencies; actively contributing to developing academic, educational and research excellence in Kazakhstan. As Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering, the appointee will also be responsible for: leading and developing the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering which launched in 2014; conducting leading research in the field of Biomedical Engineering, particularly Biomedical Devices, which has relevance to and impact on the broader Kazakh healthcare industry; playing an active role in the growth and development of the School regarding mentoring, leadership, morale and capacity building. 8 Professor of Biomedical Engineering PERSON SPECIFICATION Candidates for the Professorial position at Nazarbayev University must have the following experience, skills, qualifications, and attributes: Earned doctorate in a relevant field; an international reputation and visibility in his/her field of research; publishing regularly in leading academic journals; experience in mentoring junior faculty or a record of graduate student supervision; a collegiate approach and active contributor to the Schools development; a strong reputation for delivering high-quality taught programs; experience in acquiring research funding from a variety of sources (including industry, national funding and University funding). As Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering, the appointee should also demonstrate: A world-leading publication record in relevant top-tier journals relating to Biomedical Engineering; experience, enthusiasm and vision for curriculum development and teaching at the PhD level; extensive experience in supervising PhDs to completion. strong communication and interpersonal skills; Nazarbayev University Professor of Biomedical Engineering 8

9 Terms of appointment A highly competitive salary, benefits package with free housing (based on rank and family size), relocation allowance, home leave travel (twice per year), Bupa health care coverage, educational allowance for dependent children and research start-up funds are available. This is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. Selection process and how to apply An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver. 10 Life in Astana, Kazakhstan HISTORY OF THE CAPITAL Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, represents all that Kazakhstan is proud of. The country s capital was moved from Almaty to Astana (at that time known as Akmola) on December 10 th, 1997 at the request of President Nazarbayev. This decision was based on a number of factors, primarily economic and geopolitical. The capital is located in the heart of the country equidistant from the country s major regions. It is developing industrial and agriculture infrastructure and becoming a major transport hub. The area was previously sparsely populated, a key reason behind the move which has given the center of Kazakhstan bright prospects for further development. Since its establishment, Astana has been transforming from a provincial town to a megapolis with a flourishing tertiary sector. Today, Astana is a modern, vibrant city with an architecture combining the best traditions of European and Eastern countries to project a truly Eurasian image onto the world stage. During the winter months (November-March) the city is within reach of the severe Siberian frost, while in summer it can sit squarely in the middle of hot air masses that form over Central Asia. 11 Life in Astana, Kazakhstan ECONOMY The city s economy is dominated by the retail, transport and construction sectors. Astana is second only to Almaty in its contribution to national GDP the two cities account for over half of the country s trade operations. In 2009, Astana accounted for one fifth of all housing commissioned in Kazakhstan and over the last five years the city has been the unprecedented leader in terms of commissioned housing. To attract investors and develop new competitive industries, a special economic zone Astana a new city has been established. Through specialized tax and customs incentives, the city seeks to create a competitive economy with a high share of tech-intensive industries, processing industries and a developed tourism sector. Within the city, industrial production is primarily focused on construction materials and foodstuffs. Astana is the leading producer of construction hardware, including ready-to-use concrete and concrete building blocks. SMEs account for 22 per cent of the region s GDP.
