1 A05/97 INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES for appointment as Professor of Accountancy (Confirmation Path) DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTANCY AND BUSINESS LAW General Information A statement of general information for applicants for academic posts within the University is attached. The University of Otago The University of Otago, which was established in 1869, is situated within the urban area of Dunedin, a city of 120,000 which is regarded in New Zealand very much as a University town, providing a sympathetic environment to the academic staff of its University. Dunedin City is attractively situated within easy distance of mountain, lake, fiord and coastal country of considerable natural beauty. A number of ski fields are also located nearby and ample opportunity exists for the pursuit of other outdoor activities including fishing, tramping, sailing and rafting. The University currently has a little over 17,000 equivalent full-time students, spread over a wide range of disciplines, and organised into four main Divisions the School of Business, Health Sciences, Humanities and Sciences Divisions. Marketing is within the School of Business and maintains links with a number of Departments in other Divisions. The relatively compact but attractive campus contributes to easy relationships between Departments. There are a variety of links with the city and its business community. The University's supporting structure includes an extensive fibre-optic network, common lecture and seminar rooms and a major library system. The University Library system comprises six major Libraries containing over 1.38 million items. The catalogues are on-line, with access from each staff member's PC. The Libraries' reference services include access to 43 databases on CD-ROM, and on-line searching on a number of New Zealand and overseas databases. The University teaching year ranges from mid-late February to the end of November. The teaching period is broken into two 13-week semesters. Most papers are offered in a single semester. 2 The University of Otago School of Business The School of Business has an enrolment of over 3,500 students. Business subjects have been taught at Otago since 1912 and the School is housed in a sophisticated, purpose-built complex that opened in The School of Business consists of seven academic departments, each of which offers majors, viz: Department of Marketing - (Head: Professor C P Harris). Department of Accountancy - (Head: Professor A MacGregor). Department of Finance and Quantitative Analysis - (Head: Professor T F Crack). Department of Economics - (Head: Associate Professor S Dobson). Department of Information Science - (Head: Professor G Benwell). Department of Management - (Head: Associate Professor G Elkin). Department of Tourism - (Head: Professor C M Hall). Also within the School of Business is the Graduate Programme. Each department (except Tourism) offers the following Degrees: Bachelor of Commerce. Bachelor of Commerce with Honours. Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce. Master of Business. Master of Commerce. Doctor of Philosophy. The Graduate Programme offers a full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Diploma for Business Administration (DipBusAdmin). The Master of Entrepreneurship Programme is also offered through Graduate Programmes. A range of Executive Education Courses is offered to local and national business communities. The Department of Tourism offers a Bachelor of Tourism, Master of Tourism and Doctor of Philosophy degree programmes. The School also offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes in International Business. The Dean of the School of Business is Professor D H Buisson. The Department of Accountancy and Business Law The Department of Accountancy and Business Law provides teaching and research at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels leading to Bachelors and Bachelors with Honours degrees in Commerce as well as Masters and Doctoral degrees. Undergraduate courses begin at 100 level with completion of Bachelors at 300 level and Honours degrees at 400 level. Research activity within the Department is well established with collaboration in various research areas and successful applications for funding from external bodies. The Department of Accountancy and Business Law consists of 17 full-time equivalent academic staff, two full-time support staff, one technical support person, 605 students (effective full-time), 37 postgraduate students (Honours, Masters and Diplomas) and four PhD candidates. A considerable network has been established with overseas universities and many prestigious academics have been appointed as visiting staff in recent years. The Department has regular staff and student exchange

3 with a number of prestigious overseas universities. These include formal and active exchange agreements with Universidade de Brasilia, Deakin University, University of California, Hansung University, and the University of Edinburgh Management School. The Department also has a regular series of prestigious international visitors. In recent years these have included Professor Sue Llewellyn, Ross Watts, Chang-Won Lee, Sotoshi Yoshimura, and Jorge Niyama. Postgraduate papers offered by the Department of Accountancy include: Financial Reporting. Accounting Theory. Accounting Information Systems. Advanced Management Accounting. Empirical Research Workshop. International Accounting. Research Methods for Accounting. Research Methodology for Accounting. Financial Management. Risk Management. Strategic Management Accounting. Environmental and Social Accounting. The research activities of the Department at present focus on six main areas: Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting. Management Accounting Best Practice. Performance Management. Capital Market Research. Accounting Information Systems. Ethics. Governance. Accounting Education. Significant research programmes are underway in all these areas and collaborative research is sought in each area. The philosophy of the Department is to ensure that an international approach is taken in most research. Duties and Responsibilities Professorial appointments are expected to provide leadership and mentoring to staff and students in both research and teaching and also to be available for service requirements both internal and external to the University. The Department has a large graduate programme and postgraduate supervision at PhD and Masters levels is an important duty. As well as supervision, a normal teaching expectation would also involve a contribution to one of the Department s core undergraduate papers and a paper in a specialist area at graduate level. In summary, key responsibilities are: Assisting with the development and implementation of a clear strategic vision for the Department while respecting the culture and values of the staff. Fostering the pre-eminent role of research in the Department and enhancing the capacity for excellent research across different aspects of the discipline. Further developing the Department s commitment to excellence in teaching and the provision of an enriching student experience. Strengthening links between the Department, its graduates and other alumni, the business community and the City of Dunedin. Strengthening international collaboration on research and student exchange programmes.

4 Date of Commencement of Duties Applicants are asked to indicate the date they would expect to be available to take up the appointment. The academic year extends from late February to late November and it is hoped that the successful appointee could take up their duties as early as possible in 2006 (or before). Salary The salary range for a Professor is $116,251 to $141,944 per annum. Appointment will be made at an appropriate step in this range depending on qualifications and experience.
