6 C h a p t e r 1 Itroductio The Itegrated Eterprise Network (IEN) Product Desig Referece ca assist you i seectig the appropriate products for desigig a etwork. This guide provides iformatio about the IEN desig process ad its basic compoets.
7 OBJECTIVE The guide takes you through the product seectio process for desigig a etwork. The cofiguratio diagrams i the IEN Product Desig Referece iustrate commoy used protocos, iterfaces, ad desig strategies. TERMINOLOGY The foowig terms are used throughout this referece. For more detaied defiitios, refer to the IEN Techica Gossary. Cetra Node Logica Node Node Node ID Port Port Processor Regioa Node The uppermost ode i the Hypercom IENView etwork maagemet system through which IENView ca admiister ad view a other odes. The cetra ode is usuay the primary ode coected to IENView. A ogica cocept defied oy withi IENView. The ogica ode represets the frame reay coud with its upik ad dowik IDs. For exampe: The ogica ode, or frame reay coud, o the Hypercom IENView etwork map ists a the frame reay coectio IDs associated with that ogica ode. Oe or more bus-exteded or expaded IEN chassis, comprised of up to 240 bus addresses. A uique umber assiged to each ode withi a IEN etwork. It is the remote ID umber assiged whe you create the database. A sige physica iterface associated with its ow bus address. Refers to a sef-cotaied CPU/iterface circuit board that icorporates a ecessary circuitry to commuicate with the IEN chassis busses. The port processor cotais a memory to ru the CPU idepedety. Hypercom produces a umber of differet types of port processors that are capabe of hadig sige or mutipe fuctios. A ode withi the Hypercom IENView etwork maagemet system that does ot fuctio as a cetra ode; it fuctios as a cocetrator for subordiate odes. From a regioa ode, you ca view the regioa ode ad subordiate odes. You ca aso admiister these odes if IENView is coected to the regioa ode.

Each step i this process equates to a chapter i this referece, as foows: Network Requiremets ad Defiitios Chapter 2 describes the process for gatherig requiremets. This iformatio is ecessary for seectig the correct products for desig impemetatio. WAN Topoogy Seectio Chapter 3 describes the WAN topoogies avaiabe withi the Itegrated Eterprise Network. Port Processor ad Modue Seectio Chapter 4 describes how to seect port processors ad modues for the protocos, appicatios, ad iterfaces withi the etwork. Port Processor Software Seectio Chapter 5 describes the appicatios avaiabe withi the Itegrated Eterprise Network. This chapter icudes how to seect port processor software for the etwork desig. 10 C H A P T E R 2 Network Requiremets ad Defiitios The first step i the Itegrated Eterprise Network desig process is to determie a etwork requiremets ad their fuctios withi each site. This icudes idetifyig a the protocos, appicatios, ad iterfaces required at each site. You ca cassify each site withi the IEN system with this iformatio. 11 CHAPTER 2 NETWORK DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Whe you desig a etwork, you must cosider basic site factors ad iformatio. Gatherig Network Requiremets Through the requiremets-gatherig process, you obtai iformatio o a sites icuded i the etwork aaysis. You use this iformatio to cassify the sites i the etwork. 12 NETWORK REQUIREMENTS AND DEFINITIONS Withi a IEN, sites are abeed as odes. You ca cassify odes as cetra, regioa, or remote; oy oe ode is cassified as the cetra, but mutipe odes ca be cassified as regioa or remote. The fuctios performed at each site determie the etwork hierarchy. Each IEN ode cosists of oe or more bus-exteded or expaded IEN chassis, cotaiig up to 240 bus addresses. Node Cassificatios The cetra ode is the uppermost ode i the etwork. The cetra ode usuay cotais the hosts that maage the processig for the rest of the etwork. It may aso cotai fuctios that are withi a corporate office or data processig ceter, icudig accoutig ad trasactio processig. You usuay coect IENView to the cetra ode, because you ca view ad admiister the etire etwork from the cetra ode. A regioa ode is usuay a cocetrator for remote odes withi the etwork. Typica sites that quaify to be regioa odes icude warehouses ad arge bak braches i major areas. The regioa ode strategy is effective whe there are may remote odes withi cose proximity that require coectio to the cetra ode. Whe you use a regioa ode, you ca cocetrate the traffic from remote odes ad sed it through oe coectio. From a regioa ode, you ca view the regioa ode ad remote odes withi its regio. You ca aso admiister these odes if you coect IENView to the regioa ode. A remote ode is the owest ode i the structure. A remote ode does ot have ay odes that are subordiate to it i the etwork. Typica sites that you ca cassify as remote odes icude a sma bak brach or a oca saes office. 13 CHAPTER 2 Assigig the Regioa ad Remote Nodes I the curret etwork desig as show i Figure 2-1, the warehouses ad saes offices are cassified as remote odes, each oe havig access to the corporate office or the cetra ode. The curret etwork desig is ot efficiet. It does ot provide easy traffic fow or ow commuicatios costs because: A the oca saes offices require access to New York The state saes offices require access to the fie server at the state s warehouse To reduce traffic fow through the corporate office i New York, promote the warehouses to regioa odes to cocetrate the traffic from the state s saes offices ad to provide a direct route to the cetra ode i New York. 15 CHAPTER 3 DEFINING THE WAN TOPOLOGY Withi a Itegrated Eterprise Network, you ca seect from three WAN topoogies: HDLC X.25 Frame Reay Seect a topoogy based o the speeds, protocos, ad iterfaces requirig support ad the amout of traffic withi your curret etwork. 16 HDLC WAN TOPOLOGY SELECTION IEN odes ca coect usig a HDLC LAP-B poit-to-poit or mutipe poit-to-poit backboe over a private eased-ie etwork, providig a ow-overhead WAN backboe. You ca use HDLC iks with other WAN topoogies such as frame reay, tai circuits from regioa odes, or cosoidatio iks from regioa to cetra odes. A HDLC mutipe poit-to-poit backboe supports up to eight drops. 17 CHAPTER 3 X.25 IEN odes ca aso coect usig a X.25 backboe etwork. Each IEN X.25 backboe coectio supports switched virtua circuit (SVC) coectios, permaet virtua circuit (PVC) coectios, or etwork maagemet oadig of SVC or PVC ca address tabes. 18 WAN TOPOLOGY SELECTION Frame Reay IEN odes ca aso coect usig a frame reay backboe. This backboe supports the trasport of egacy ad LAN-based protocos ad aso aows voice ad data to trave over the same backboe. Frame reay provides predictabe etwork trasitio times ad routig betwee etwork odes. There are various frame reay backboes avaiabe. Usig frame reay as a backboe, you ca route IEN data traffic from ay ode to ay other ode. This backboe topoogy ca support up to 240 PVCs per port. 20 WAN TOPOLOGY SELECTION Usig the Frame Reay Network-to-Network (NNI) iterface, you ca pass frame reay traffic from oca ports to the frame reay etwork. This is kow as Frame Reay Pass-Through. Figure 3-8 Frame Reay Pass-Through backboe topoogy A carrier-based frame reay coectio may ofte be the best choice whe og distaces are ivoved. Carrier-based frame reay requires oy a oca access circuit from your ocatio to the carrier s oca premises. The carrier s itera etwork structure covers the og distace. A oca-access circuit is the made betwee a remote, regioa, or cetra ode ad the carrier s oca premises. A carrier-based frame reay may reduce costs compared to a dedicated circuit INTEGRATED ENTERPRISE NETWORK 3-7
21 CHAPTER 3 WAN Physica Iterfaces IEN supports a direct digita service (DDS) ad T1 WAN coectios, as we as V.35 ad ISDN. T1 or Fractioa T1 (FT1) T1 may ofte be the best WAN iterface whe the etwork requires high badwidth appicatios betwee two odes or amog arger umbers of outside, or o-tie-ie, voice ies. Cost savigs come from the voume discout a carrier ca offer compared to idividuay coected ies. Ay more tha oe 64Kbps coectio is cosidered a T1 coectio. Two to twety-four of these coectios are cosidered a fractioa T1. 56K/64Kbps DDS A 56/64Kbps DDS coectio may be best suited for ower badwidth appicatios. Sma umbers of 56K/64K DDS circuits may ofte resut i ower cost tha a fractioa T1 or fu T1 coectio. The threshod for seectig a FT1 or a T1 coectio varies by carrier. 3-8 IEN PRODUCT DESIGN REFERENCE
22 WAN TOPOLOGY SELECTION DETERMINING THE WAN TOPOLOGY To defie the WAN requiremets, buid from the owest eve to the highest, or from the remote odes to the cetra ode. As you defie badwidth requiremets, you ca determie the badwidth eeded for growth ad how much badwidth the cetra ode requires to support a its subordiate odes. 24 WAN TOPOLOGY SELECTION Each remote ode aso requires a Committed Iformatio Rate (CIR) of 19.2Kbps because of the burstig ature ad voumes expected. Each remote ode has a permaet virtua circuit (PVC) defied i the frame reay etwork to the regioa ode. 27 CHAPTER 4 SELECTING PORT PROCESSORS AND MODULES Certai protocos require a specific port processor ad modue; other protocos have mutipe port processor ad modue combiatios. Each of the mutipe port processor optios is based o specific etwork desig requiremets, such as WAN iterface ad WAN speed. Creatig A Network Map Usig the iformatio gathered i the etwork requiremets process ad the etwork topoogy diagram, you ca create a etwork map. To create a etwork map, use the fuctioa iformatio for the cetra, regioa, ad remote odes to idetify the protoco ad iterface requiremets for each ode. 28 PORT PROCESSOR AND MODULE SELECTION The iformatio o the etwork map heps idetify the required port processors ad modues. Withi the etwork, you specify WAN requiremets ad the ode-eve, or oca, requiremets. The umber ad type of port processors ad modues required for each WAN ad oca ode heps determie chassis requiremets for each ode. Defiig WAN Port Processors ad Modues The WAN protocos ad appicatios icude: Dia backup Frame reay HDLC ISDN Voice over frame reay X.25 As show i Tabe 4-1, some protocos require a specific port processor ad modue; others require a fowchart to idetify the correct port processor ad modue. The fowcharts use specific parameters, such as physica iterface requiremets ad ie speed, to determie the appropriate port processor. Each port processor requires oe sot i a chassis.
