Such actions allow the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux to achieve good sales performance: against the background of a declining market in France, the Côtes de Bordeaux are in fact selling very well in France, while exports continue to progress % over years. A success that we owe, above all, to the place our winegrowers have in our development strategy. Whether through our products or our actions, they cultivate proximity and share it with consumers: - the wines are authentic but no less accessible and fruity, - the estates are family owned and run by a young generation of dynamic winegrowers, - many events for the general public are organised by our Maisons du Vin. This year again, we are going to meet them to continue our strategy of conquering markets and lifting the Côtes de Bordeaux still higher! Stéphane Héraud President of the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux 3

3 THE CÔTES DE BORDEAUX, A BIG FAMILY Largest French AC vineyard with around hectares, Bordeaux, famed throughout the world for the quality and variety of its grape varieties representing: - 5. million hectolitres of wine produced in 01-7,65 winegrowers - 60 AOCs. A DEDICATED TEAM AT YOUR SERVICE Within the wines of Bordeaux, the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux counts nearly 1000 producers across an area of hectares. With hectolitres produced on average each year (mostly red, at 97%), the Côtes de Bordeaux represents 10% of the wines of Bordeaux, or 1 bottle in 10. Premières Côtes de Blaye HAS BECOME Premières Côtes de Bordeaux rouges HAS BECOME Côtes de Castillon HAS BECOME Franck Jullion President of Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux: "The Union des Côtes de Bordeaux is the extension of the commercial life of our properties, to establish themselves internationally." Patricia Zabalza, Director of the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux: Stéphane Héraud, President of the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux: "Together we can go further and more quickly. With the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux we work hand in hand to showcase our appellations throughout the world." Franck Richard President of Francs Côtes de Bordeaux: "Our winegrowers cultivate closeness, convivialty and sharing. Values which we are proud to represent together and to support among consumers." Created in 007, the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux (UCB) brings together the terroirs of Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs under a single banner. Very quickly, with the wish to confirm its identity among consumers, the UCB decided to develop a recognisable group brand : the AOC Côtes de Bordeaux. The new appellation has allowed easier recognition of the products thanks to the common family name Côtes de Bordeaux and the terroirs Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs, highlighting the personality and character of each of these wines. Since the 009 vintage, the use of these new appellations has therefore become obligatory. Bordeaux Côtes de Francs HAS BECOME For foreign markets, the creation of the AOC Côtes de Bordeaux has allowed easy identification of the Bordeaux region while at the same time bringing out the value of hillside (coteaux) terroir. Also new is the fact that the appellation Côtes de Bordeaux now allows all producers and merchants to blend wines from different terroirs of the Côtes, and to use the name Côtes de Bordeaux on its own, in order to create strong commercial brands. The objective of the Côtes is to develop their brands, especially on export markets. Laurent Gapenne President of Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux: "Our Union is also a union of our terroirs. Their diversity and richness allow us to make quality wines which are expressive and tasty." "Proud to have made the Union and to continue to build it every day! Together, committed and passionate, our winegrowers are the true ambassadors of the Côtes. Come to meet them: there are lots of great things to discover" Aurélie Lascourrèges, Press Officer: "The Côtes de Bordeaux is a daily collaboration of all the stakeholders to make our appellations shine to consumers." Françoise Lannoye President of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux: "The Union des Côtes de Bordeaux, is above all a real-life adventure to move forward together and take our appellations still higher!" 4 5

5 THE CÔTES DE BORDEAUX, AT THE HEART OF HISTORY 1 From the Gironde estuary to the borders of the Dordogne, passing by the banks of the Garonne, the territory of the Côtes de Bordeaux charms with the diversity of its landscapes and its rich heritage. Historic châteaux, manor houses, fortresses and splendid homes, immortalised by famous artists, are evidence of the rich history of the region. Villages retaining their narrow streets, and fortified towns and windmills, are signs of a centuries old tradition of agricultural and trading activity. Origins in antiquity Hordes of invaders swept up on the shores of the Atlantic at the end of the Pax Romana. The English occupation of Aquitaine ended in 1453 with the Battle of Castillon. Some of the greatest moments in French history have been played out in the territory of the Côtes de Bordeaux. The Côtes de Bordeaux have also played an important part in the history of French wine. The vine has been planted in this region since ancient times. Already in the nd century the Romans had planted the first Vitis Biturica vines, and according to the writings of Ausonius in the 4th century, the reputation of the wines they produced had spread as far as Rome. The real rise in viticulture in the region started with the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England, which opened up the London market for the wines from the Côtes. Another boost for the wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux came in the second half of the 17th century. The English favoured these wines for export to their colonies, because of their excellent ability to withstand transport and storage. Unfairly left out of the 1855 classification, the wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux have nevertheless kept all their former splendour and continue to charm fine wine connoisseurs throughout the world More recently 1985 : Aware of the force that they could represent together, the wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux decided to pool their resources, adopt a real identity and communicate with a single voice: the Côtes de Bordeaux association was born July 007 : The idea of a recognisable collective brand was developed, to reunite the appellations of the association under one banner: the AOC Côtes de Bordeaux. The former association became the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux, uniting the terroirs of Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs. October 008 : The draft technical specifications of the new appellation were published in the Official Journal. This included the use of a common family name, Côtes de Bordeaux, and a first name, Blaye, Francs, Castillon or Cadillac to highlight the personality of each terroir. 31 October 009 : In consultation with the INAO and the professional authorities of Bordeaux, the new AOC Côtes de Bordeaux was officially born. December 011 : The rules of the new appellation were officially recognised by decree. 8 9

6 THE CÔTES DE BORDEAUX, A HERITAGE TO DISCOVER THROUGH WINE TOURISM The battle of Castillon Each summer, 450 actors and more than 50 horse riders take part in this immense historical reconstruction commemorating the final battle of the Hundred Years War. "The Battle of Castillon" has established itself as one of the top events in Aquitaine. The château de Francs Overlooking the appellation Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, the château de Francs dates from the Middle Ages. Only a part of the castle was in reality a lordly dwelling, the other part being allocated to 300 troops with their horses and crews Beautiful panoramas Exceptional sites in the heart of our 4 appellations La citadelle de Blaye Built between 1686 and 1689, this ancient military building composed of 17 hectares of barracks, shops, powder stores and housing for officers, is now classified as a Historical Monument and has established itself as a leading centre for tourism in the Haute Gironde and Aquitaine. Since 008, it has been on the UNESCO world heritage list. To improve awareness of its wines in France, the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux has for several years been developing the important concept of wine tourism. The appellations of the Union des Côtes de Bordeaux share sunny hillsides and an exceptional architectural and historical heritage, making them a particularly pleasant holiday destination or simply a place to enjoy a walk among the vineyards and the châteaux. The château of Cadillac Located 35 km from Bordeaux and dominating the river Garonne and the bastide town of Cadillac, the castle built in 1599 by the duke of Epernon is one of the first examples of French-style architecture and was transformed for 130 years into a prison for women. 3 4 Maisons du Vin at the service of tourists and consumers The Maison des Vins of Blaye Located in the heart of the town of Blaye, at the foot of the citadelle, the Maison du Vin of Blaye offers more than 300 different wines. Open the whole year, a team of professionals is available to guide visitors. The Maison des Vins of Castillon In June, the appellation Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux inaugurated its new Maison du Vin, entirely reorganised to provide better visibility of products and a privileged welcome to consumers. More modern and more functional, the Maison du Vin of Castillon will become the reference point for all the appellation. Varied events throughout the year Throughout the year, the appellations increase the number of events held to share their passion and their know-how with visitors. Route of discovery with Saint Emilion for the wines of Castillon, summer evenings in the properties of Blaye or harvest walks in Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, the appellations are opening their doors for a dive into the heart of the world of wine. 11

If each of the Côtes has its particularities, the winegrowers have a common interest: producing quality wines. THE GRAPE VARIETIES The grapes in the Côtes de Bordeaux are harvested parcel by parcel, variety by variety. The reds of the Côtes de Bordeaux are mainly made from the Merlot variety, associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. For the whites, the major grape is Sauvignon, blended with Sémillon. MAKING THE WINE The vinification in the Côtes de Bordeaux follows several steps: destemming, crushing, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, ageing in tank and/or in casks, blending and finally, the making of the cuvées. An artisanal expertise that combines both tradition and modernity. The wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux are therefore prepared according to traditional Bordeaux methods to offer consumers wines that are always expressive and tasty. They are also committed to the respect for the environment and numerous winegrowers of the Côtes de Bordeaux have adopted the Bordeaux Wine Environmental Management System, an initiative to reduce the impact on the environment, while improving overall performance. In addition, a large number produce organic wines are converting to biodynamic farming. 1 13

8 THE CÔTES DE BORDEAUX, WINES TO GIVE PLEASURE A PALETTE OF FLAVOURS TO DISCOVER THE CÔTES DE BORDEAUX, A PALETTE OF SENSATIONS With nearly 1000 producers, the Côtes de Bordeaux enjoy a temperate climate due to the proximity of the river and have a good diversity. Visual sensations: the colour is dense and deep. Every vintage is different and the aromas depend on the terroir and grape varieties used. Olfactory sensations: the nose has aromas of red fruits (raspberry, strawberry), stone fruit (plum, cherry) but also of vanilla, mocha, and leather. 1 BLENDING : AN ART SPECIFIC TO THE WINES OF BORDEAUX The specificity of the wines of Bordeaux is in the blending, which distinguishes them from the wines from other regions, often made with a single grape variety. This blending, as a function of their complementarity, enables making varied styles of wine, with a character and a personality of their own. The winegrowers of the Côtes de Bordeaux are committed each year to achieve the best blend of varietals products in their vineyards. It is this alchemy, this work of the soil and of man, which gives the wines of the Côtes their particular character. 3 Taste sensations: the wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux are round, soft, opulent and harmonious on the palate. SERVING AND CELLARING A COTES DE BORDEAUX From the blending of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, the red wines of the Côtes de Bordeaux develop fruity bouquets. Merlot: intense colour, the suppleness of the tannins brings velvet and roundness to the wines. Its typical aromas are red berries and cherries. The temperature of service varies mainly according to the colour of the wine and its age. It is considered for red wines that the ideal drinking temperature is between 16 and 18 C, and between 8 and 11 C for dry white wines. Cabernet Franc: with a lighter character, it gives wines with a tannic richness of great finesse. Cabernet Sauvignon: this variety brings powerful tannins and good acidity. It is characterised by a great aromatic richness (notes of blackcurrant) when young, and develops a rich bouquet, complex and harmonious, on ageing. A tulip glass is recommended to appreciate the taste even more and discover the aromas. Finally, decanting is recommended for young and tannic red wines, still a bit closed, to allow the wine to evolve through contact with oxygen, and to open up to give a more agreeable tasting wine. 4 TASTING A COTES DE BORDEAUX Dense and deep colour, with a nose of red fruits (raspberry, strawberry), stone fruit (plum, cherry) but also of vanilla, mocha, and leather, the Côtes de Bordeaux wines are the fruity, round, and moderately powerful to powerful. They can be enjoyed when young, but also have a good potential for ageing and can be kept for around ten years. To accompany food, their possibilities are almost limitless: white and red meat, cheese, etc

9 EXPORT, THE STAKES FOR COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT Export: promising results 0 % of the production of the Côtes de Bordeaux (1 bottle in 5) is exported today, against 38% for the whole of Bordeaux. This means that the potential for growth is large. The last years 01 and 013 were marked by excellent performance, with a strong increase in volumes: +39% the export market share has doubled in 5 years, from 11 to 0%. HONGKONG 5% UNITED KINGDOM 5% GERMANY 5% OTHERS 19% CHINA 3% BELGIUM 1% 1 The Côtes de Bordeaux, a booming appellation CANADA 7% JAPAN 7% USA 8% The challenge is big: explain their specificities to the market and instil the new AOCs in the 3 minds of consumers. To do this, the Union des Côtes Bordeaux works hand in hand with the winegrowers and the merchants to the promote the new French appellation throughout the world. A challenge that has become a priority over the years and which is bearing its first fruits. The Côtes de Bordeaux, a development strategy that pays off Since the launch of the new appellation Côtes de Bordeaux from the 009 vintage, the wines are now in the majority on the shelves and the 4 appellations of Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs are performing well both in France and internationally. The Union des Côtes de Bordeaux is increasing promotional actions to develop brand awareness and gain market share. Excellent results from a strategy to penetrate markets Launched only a few years ago, the common appellation name "Côtes de Bordeaux" is 4 014, new developments on the horizon To continue to make progress, the Côtes continue their offensive with a strategy which is based on several fronts: continuing actions in the priority countries: the action plan is sequenced over 3 years, with the aim to be present times per year in each country. The promotion efforts remain strong therefore in the USA, Hong Kong and China (now the 1st market) and Japan. The actions in Germany have been strengthened. a clearly defined target: decision leaders. The main axis of the promotion operations remains training and information. So decision leaders, press, importers, wholesalers, wine shops, restaurateurs and sommeliers will again be invited this year to tutored tastings. The Côtes de Bordeaux also participate in international fairs like Bordeaux Vinipro, Prowein, Vinexpo Hong Kong, Hong Kong Wine Fair, Prowine Shanghai. Finally, the Union will renew operations in the wine bars of the CIVB and the Côtes will be present in wine festivals: Bordeaux in June, Brussels in September, Hong Kong in November. the definition of an even stronger identity: the Côtes will rework their positioning and their image and will develop new marketing tools to help operators to always speak better of their wines. installed in the landscape of French wines and shows its first very promising results. "In an economic downturn, 01 and 013 were marked by very good performance for the Union des Côtes: our progress was faster than the average of Bordeaux wines in France (+3 %), as in export (+39% in two years) " says Patricia Zabalza, director of the Union. Also of note, is the trend for higher prices for the Côtes wines. "On several priority markets (China, USA etc.), the value has increased more than the volumes". Results which draw on a stronger plan for promotional activities essentially for export: more than 30 operations have in fact been carried out in 6 countries in 013 (vs 1 in 010) while in France, the pooling of press relations has allowed the Côtes to double their presence in the media. Several important actions are planned for 014: Participation in exhibitions in France and abroad, in the presence of producers and merchants: Prowein in Germany, WWM in Chicago, Bordeaux Vinipro in France, Vinexpo in Hong Kong, Wine Fair and Prowine Shanghai. Training and tastings for decision leaders (importers. distributors, sommeliers) on the main Tailor-made visits/discoveries in the vineyards for professionals (a hundred professionals will be welcomed each year).
