2 Georgetown University s International Campuses School of Foreign Service campus in Doha, Qatar Founded in 2005 May 2011, graduated our third class of 44 students earning Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) degrees, majoring in International Politics & Culture and Politics August 2011, total student population was 203 students from 54 nationalities, including 74 new students for the Class of 2015 The new academic year 2011/12 also introduced major in International Economics Qatar Campus Auditorium Building Exterior, nearing completion

4 Georgetown University and Queen s University Belfast MOU signed between GU and QUB by the respective leaders of each institution at the British Embassy in Washington, DC in September 2005 GU and QUB received a prestigious UK-US Partnership Fund award from the British Council in March 2011 Develop collaborative programs in law, medicine, and peace and social justice Explore additional partnerships with institutions in developing countries

5 New GU Relationship with QUB and NII In November 2011, GUMC and QUB explored an opportunity to expand the relationship to include the National Institute of Immunology in New Delhi, India. Identify and establish collaborative research program in biomedicine Initial collaborations are established in cancer research but the MOU enables any broad interactions among any of the institutions that are thought to be mutually beneficial Will expand quickly to include drug discovery and next generation HPV vaccine development and testing

China Scholarship Council (CSC) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program established in May 2006 Supports and promotes scholarly exchange between Georgetown and leading Chinese research institutions Fellows are jointly funded by CSC, a scholarship agency affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education, and Georgetown University Over 30 scholars have been granted this fellowship and conducted research at Georgetown, mostly at the Medical Center

Center for Transnational Legal Studies Opened in Fall 2008 in High Holborn, London and Administered by GU Law staff Study transnational legal issues in a multicultural and transnational setting Founding Partners in the Center ESADE Law School (Spain), Free University of Berlin, Hebrew University of Jerusalem King s College London, National University of Singapore, UNAM (Mexico) University of Fribourg (Switzerland), University of Melbourne, University of Torino University of Toronto Other partners include QUB, Moscow State University, Peking University, Yonsei University (and at least 8 other institutions worldwide)

Center for Transnational Legal Studies Several classes are co-taught by professors from Law Schools in different countries Each class has students from a diverse set of legal and national backgrounds. Bovine Genome Database Consortium The Bovine Genome Database supports the efforts of the Consortium by creating a model organism database that integrates bovine genomics data with structural and functional annotations of genes and the genome Members: Georgetown University University of Adelaide University of Minnesota University of Queensland

12 Equalizing the Relationship Can/should you ensure that all parties have comparable or adequate risks/benefits and expend effort broadly equivalent to their respective capabilities? What s in it for me? Take the time to truly understand what each institution/partner needs before you get too far You need us to do that!! by then!? and what they (and you) can deliver All parties are created equal even if they re not so check your institutional ego at the door best you should aim for is to be first among equals Murphy s Law is always in force Importance of pre-planning and equal buy-in from all parties Never presume that things will go smoothly or predictably!

13 Multilateral Partnerships Multilateral partnerships are not just a buzzword (routine in the commercial sector) Why not also higher education? What can we offer? Undergraduate or postgraduate Postdoctoral or continuing/professional education Is what we offer what is needed? Is it, or does it need to be, sustainable (for us and/or for our partners)? Why not also research? Some of the physical sciences (e.g., astrophysics) Increasing reality in biomedical research (team science) Postdoctoral or continuing/professional education Is what we offer what is needed? Is it, or does it need to be, sustainable (for us and/or for our partners)?

14 Multilateral Partnerships Partnerships: Regional or Global African American (north) American (south) Asian Australasian Caribbean European International partnerships can be successful without either the US and/or UK Some folks just don t like each other (or us in particular)! What if it s all about the money? Check your national ego at the door!
