TREANOR Georgetown Law At the Center for Transnational Legal Studies, scholars and students from over 20 countries explore cross-border issues in classes where there is no majority nationality, and each perspective is informed by all others. Gaining knowledge, skills, and a global network of colleagues, CTLS students are uniquely prepared for legal practice in the 21st century.

5 WHY A CENTER FOR TRANSNATIONAL LEGAL STUDIES? Leaders of the legal profession in this 21st century need to understand law within the context of different legal systems and different cultures. These lawyers will increasingly be called upon to advise businesses, individuals, non-governmental entities, and governments in matters that involve parties, laws, and judicial or arbitral bodies in two or more jurisdictions. To prepare for careers that transcend the borders of their home countries, they need to develop transnational perspectives. CTLS offers that preparation in a manner unlike any conventional study abroad or exchange program. The Center s academic purpose is to examine transnational legal issues from within a transnational educational context. Thus, while the school is located in London and instruction is in English, there is no host school, local faculty, or domestic legal context. Instead, faculty and students are drawn from world-class law schools from across the globe. All are encouraged to share their home jurisdiction perspectives on academic issues. While most seats at CTLS are reserved for students from the Center s global partner schools, a limited number of spots are also available to highly qualified law students from other law schools. 6 CURRICULUM The CTLS curriculum is unique in its mix of required and elective courses in the areas of international, transnational and comparative law. To break the ice, the semester commences with an all- student and faculty Global Practice Exercise with role-playing simulations. Alternative Dispute Resolution Transnational Environmental Law Human Rights Law European Union Law & Policy Refugee and Immigration Law Students then select from a rich array of elective offerings in addition to the introductory core course in transnational studies and the weekly scholarly colloquium featuring papers and discussion with leading transnational law scholars producing cutting edge work. The curriculum typically includes the following areas: International Business Regulation International Trade Law International Investment Law Transnational Securities Law Comparative law courses such as Comparative Constitutional Law, Comparative Criminal Law, Comparative Income Taxation and Comparative Private Law are also featured. For more information on the curriculum, see the CTLS website at edu/academics.html Please note that CTLS is not a degree-granting institution. Rather, students are awarded a Certificate in Transnational Legal Studies and a Georgetown Law transcript indicating courses taken and grades received. The CTLS semester abroad program IS an ABA-approved program. 4

8 ADMISSIONS APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: General Application Criteria Selection is competitive, with CTLS viewed as an honors program for particularly focused and capable individuals. High level of English proficiency (see below). U.S. students must have completed their entire first year curriculum in order to participate. Students from other countries must have completed their foundational legal studies and be capable of advanced study of the law. English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English is essential to participate. Minimum English-language proficiency scores are: TOEFL 100/250/600; IELTS 7.0. Required Application Materials: Independent candidates: Completed online application form. See Letter of Good Standing from current law school Resume or CV Official transcript from current or most recently attended law school Letter of recommendation from faculty member or employer 6

9 Georgetown and other partner school applicants: please contact home school for details. Academic Credit U.S. students can earn up to 14 ABA-approved credits through this program. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate in Transnational Legal Studies. Georgetown Law will issue each student a Georgetown Law transcript reflecting courses taken and grades received. Tuition Fees Partner school applicants: please consult home school for details. Independent candidates: tuition fees are US $12,500* per semester, or, if higher, the equivalent of a student s home school tuition (up to a maximum of US $20,000). *See to confirm current tuition rate and for information on estimated living expenses. 7
