5 HP Insight Diagnstics verview Intrductin HP Insight Diagnstics is a practive server management tl, available in bth Online and Offline editins. Insight Diagnstics prvides diagnstics and trubleshting capabilities t assist IT administratrs wh verify server installatins, trublesht prblems, and perfrm repair validatin. HP Insight Diagnstics Online Editin is a web-based applicatin that captures hardware and perating system cnfiguratin infrmatin, recrds critical infrmatin fr dcumentatin and disaster recvery, and cmpares histrical cnfiguratins n the same server r a baseline server. Available in Micrsft Windws and Linux versins, Insight Diagnstics helps t ensure prper system peratin. Online diagnsis f hard drives and pwer supplies can be assessed fr ptential issues under the fllwing cnditins: Hard drives attached t an HP Smart Array Cntrller Pwer supplies that are HP cmmn slt pwer supplies and are deemed "diagnsable" by Pwer Supply Diagnsis sftware using specific HP part numbers and HP servers HP Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin captures system cnfiguratin infrmatin and prvides detailed diagnstic testing capabilities. The Offline Editin prvides a cmprehensive suite f ffline system and cmpnent tests, prviding in-depth testing f critical hardware cmpnents fr devices such as prcessrs, memry, and hard drives. During ffline testing, the user-installed OS is nt running; therefre, sftware infrmatin frm the system is nt reprted. Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin runs when the cmputer is started frm ne f the fllwing CDs: HP SmartStart CD n HP PrLiant servers HP Dcumentatin CD r HP Dcumentatin and Diagnstics CD n HP business PC r HP wrkstatin cmputers IMPORTANT: Third-party devices nt supprted by HP might nt be detected by HP Insight Diagnstics. Key features and benefits HP Insight Diagnstics simplifies the prcess f effectively identifying, diagnsing, and islating hardware issues. 6 In additin t system management tls, service tls can reslve system prblems quickly. T streamline the service prcess and reslve prblems quickly, yu must have the right infrmatin available at the time that a service call is placed. This cmbinatin f features simplifies the service prcess and minimizes dwntime. Thery f peratin HP Insight Diagnstics is a useful step in trubleshting prcedures. If a system prblem ccurs, d the fllwing: Check the cmputer health and status LEDs. Use the Insight Diagnstics Survey feature t verify the hardware cnfiguratin and firmware versins. Use the Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin Test feature t help validate the hardware. Use the IML (if supprted) t identify system errrs. 7 Getting started Installing the Online Editin Use the apprpriate prcedures fr yur OS envirnment. Remving HP Survey Utility Befre installing the HP Insight Diagnstics Online Editin, HP recmmends remving the HP Survey Utility. Use the prcedures in this sectin t remve the sftware. Remving the HP Survey Utility fr Windws If installed, remve the HP Survey Utility fr Windws befre installing HP Insight Diagnstics Online Editin: 1. G t Add r Remve Prgrams. 2. Select Hewlett-Packard Survey Utility. 3. Click the Remve buttn. Remving the HP Survey Utility fr Linux If installed, remve the HP Survey Utility fr Linux befre installing HP Insight Diagnstics Online Editin: 1. Identify which versin f the Survey utility is installed. Enter the fllwing cmmand: rpm -qa grep survey 2. Remve the Survey utility. Enter the fllwing cmmand: rpm -e survey Installing HP Insight Diagnstics fr Windws Online Editin Installing frm the HP PrLiant Supprt Pack Install the HP PrLiant Supprt Pack (PSP) frm the HP SmartStart CD. Lg n t the Windws server with administratr access rights. 2. Dwnlad the Smart Cmpnent executable file. 3. Cpy the executable file t a temprary directry n the target server. 4. Run the Smart Cmpnent executable file t start the HP Diagnstics interactive installatin prgram. Getting started 7

8 During the installatin, the Insight Diagnstics files are cpied t the \hp\hpdiags flder n the same drive in which Windws is installed, usually the C: drive. Installing HP Insight Diagnstics fr Linux Online Editin Installing frm the HP PrLiant Supprt Pack Install the HP PrLiant Supprt Pack (PSP) frm the HP SmartStart CD. HP Insight Diagnstics fr Linux installs during the PSP installatin. Fr mre infrmatin n the PSP, see the HP PrLiant Supprt Pack and Deplyment Utilities User Guide. Installing frm an RPM file Lcating files HP Insight Diagnstics fr Linux is available fr use with the Linux RPM utility. The fllwing RPM ptins are available: Install Query Refresh Uninstall T install the Insight Diagnstics fr Linux RPM file: 1. Obtain the Insight Diagnstics RPM file. 2. Lg in t the target server as rt. 3. Enter the fllwing cmmand: rpm -Uvh <rpmfilename> Fr example: rpm -Uvh hpdiags i386 rpm During the installatin, the HP Insight Diagnstics files are cpied t the fllwing directries: The HP Insight Diagnstics executable file is cpied t the /pt/hp/hpdiags directry. The startup script that lads the HP Insight Diagnstics Web Daemn is cpied t the /etc/init.d/hpdiags directry. Mdifying brwser settings n a Linux server Bth the brwser menu bar that displays the address and the menu bar directly belw it must be minimized s that the HP Insight Diagnstics screens fit in the brwser windw crrectly. T minimize the menu bars: 1. Click the dwn arrw lcated between the Back and Frward buttns and the address field t minimize the menu bar that displays the address. 2. T minimize the bttm menu bar: a. Right-click an pen space in the menu bar. b. Select Prperties. c. Select the Aut hide check bx. d. Click Apply. Starting the Online Editin frm Micrsft Internet Explrer T lg n t the System Management Hmepage frm Micrsft Internet Explrer: 1. Open the brwser. 2. In the address field, enter the fllwing: 3. Press the Enter key. The Security Alert dialg bx appears the first time yu navigate t a system withut a Certificate Authrity Rt Certificate. The Security Alert dialg bx des nt display if a Certificate Authrity Rt Certificate is installed n the brwsers t be used fr management. If it des display after this is implemented, yu might have brwsed t the wrng system. Fr mre infrmatin abut installing the Certificate Authrity Rt Certificate, refer t the nline help in yur brwser. 4. Click Yes. The Lgin page appears. If Annymus access is enabled, the System Management Hmepage appears. 5. Enter yur user name and passwrd. 6. Click Lgin. The System Management Hmepage appears. Starting the Online Editin frm Mzilla T lg in t the System Management Hmepage with Mzilla: 1. Open the brwser. 2. In the address field, enter the fllwing: The first time yu navigate t this link, the Website Certified by an Unknwn Authrity dialg bx appears. 3. Click the OK buttn. The Lgin page appears. 12 5. Click Lgin. The System Management Hmepage appears. Using the Online Editin frm a cmmand line T list the cmmand line ptins, enter the fllwing cmmands: cd pt\hp\hpdiags hpdiags -? The ptinal cmmand line parameters are listed in the fllwing table. Parameter Descriptin -l<languagecde> Language Cde ptins: en (fr English, the default language) de (fr German) es (fr Spanish) fr (fr French) it (fr Italian) ja (fr Japanese) -v <Level> Verbsity f utput where Level is an integer between 1 and 5. Level 1 is the mst filtered and Level 5 is the mst verbse. The default is Level 3. -s "mmhhddmmdd" Schedule autmatic executin. mm=minute (0-59), hh=hur (0-23), dd=day (1-31), MM=mnth (1-12), DD=day f week (0-6). All fields must be tw digits (02 instead f 2). Use a single asterisk (*) fr any value. If yu use an asterisk, yu must qute the date/time value (-s "0023***"). If n asterisk is used, the qutes are ptinal. This cmmand adds an entry t yur crntab, fr Linux-based systems, r the Windws Scheduled Tasks list, fr Windws-based systems. Fr mre Infrmatin n crntab, enter man crntab at a Linux cmmand prmpt. -u Unschedule f HP Insight Diagnstics running. This cmmand remves all entries that refer t HP Insight Diagnstics in yur crntab. Fr a Windws system, this cmmand remves the entries in the Windws Scheduled Tasks list. -c <File1> <File2> Cmpare a file t the current utput, r if tw files are specified, cmpare the files withut generating a new reprt. -t Run a new Survey snapsht and utput t the terminal. This ptin is ignred if - is nt specified. -p Survey captures and cmparisns can be t a file as plain text. The default is XML frmat. - <File1> Run a new survey snapsht and utput t a file. The default is frmed using the current date in this frmat: surveyccyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss.xml (CC=century, YY=year, MM=mnth, DD=day, HH=hur, mm=minute, and ss=secnd). -t and - cannt be used tgether. -f Overwrite the utput file if it already exists. If the - parameter is nt specified this ptin is ignred. Getting started 12

13 Parameter Descriptin -a Append the utput t an existing utput file. -rd If n - ptin is specified, this ptin is ignred. T avid XML parsing errrs, use this ptin with the plain text (-p). Run a diagnsis f all diagnsable devices. The test results are psted t the Diagnsis Lg (diagnsislg.xml). -?, -h Display help. Using Insight Diagnstics Cmmands in Linux T use the cmmand line switches in Linux: 1. Open a Terminal windw if necessary. 2. Change t the /pt/hp/hpdiags directry. 3. Enter the cmmand with the preferred switch. See the fllwing examples: T capture Survey cnfiguratin infrmatin, and then send the XML file t a terminal, enter either f the fllwing cmmands: #./hpdiags -t # /pt/hp/hpdiags/hpdiags -t Fr example, if, every Mnday at 5:00 AM, yu want Insight Diagnstics t cmpare the riginal Survey cnfiguratin file t the current Survey cnfiguratin, and then save the result t a remte file in plain-text frmat, type the fllwing cmmand: #./hpdiags -s "0005**01" -c surveybase.xml -p - /mnt/remteserver/surveycmpare.txt T verify the System Management Hmepage status n a Linux server, enter the fllwing cmmand: /etc/init.d/hpsmhd status Starting the Offline Editin Starting frm an HP SmartStart CD On an HP PrLiant server, start HP Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin frm the HP SmartStart CD: 1. Insert the HP SmartStart CD int the ptical drive. 2. Shut dwn the perating system, and then pwer ff the server. 3. Pwer n the server. The system bts frm the SmartStart CD. If the system des nt bt t the CD in the ptical drive, yu might need t change the bt rder in the Cmputer Setup (F10) utility s that the system bts t the ptical drive befre bting t the hard drive. 14 Starting frm an HP Dcumentatin CD On an HP business PC r HP wrkstatin, start HP Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin frm either the HP Dcumentatin CD r the HP Dcumentatin and Diagnstics CD: 1. Insert the CD int the ptical drive. 2. Shut dwn the perating system, and pwer ff the cmputer. 3. Pwer n the cmputer. The system bts t the CD. If the system des nt bt t the CD in the ptical drive, yu might need t change the bt rder in the Cmputer Setup (F10) utility s that the system bts t the ptical drive befre bting t the hard drive. Fr mre infrmatin, see the Cmputer Setup (F10) Utility Guide n the Dcumentatin CD. 4. D ne f the fllwing: T perate in Safe mde, press the Y key. T perate in Regular mde, press any ther key. Regular mde is the default mde if a key is nt pressed within the specified time. If the screen remains blank after bting int Regular mde, rebt the server and press the Y key t bt int Safe mde. 5. Select the apprpriate language, and then click Cntinue. 6. Click the Agree buttn at the End User License Agreement. Getting started 14

15 Using HP Insight Diagnstics HP Insight Diagnstics cntains the fllwing primary tabs: Survey Diagnse Test (available in Offline Editin nly) Status Lg Help Using the Survey tab The HP Insight Diagnstics Survey feature displays system cnfiguratin infrmatin n the Survey tab. When Insight Diagnstics starts, summary infrmatin fr the Overview categry appears. T view cnfiguratin details fr a different subject: 1. Select the cnfiguratin details t view frm the View Level list: Select Summary t view summary cnfiguratin infrmatin. Select Advanced t view detailed cnfiguratin infrmatin. 2. Select the subject t view frm the Categries list: All displays all infrmatin abut the system and subsystems. Overview displays general infrmatin abut the system. Architecture displays the type f bus the system uses, the BIOS, and PCI-related infrmatin. Asset Cntrl displays the prduct name, serial number, asset tag, and prcessr infrmatin (system identificatin number). Cmmunicatin displays infrmatin abut the system parallel (LPT) prt, serial (COM) prt, USB, and netwrk interface cntrller. Graphics displays infrmatin abut the graphics subsystem, including the graphics card, graphics mde, ROM, and vide memry. Input Devices displays infrmatin abut the type f keybard, muse, and ther input devices cnnected t the cmputer. Internal Cnditins (if supprted n system) displays infrmatin abut the health f the cmputer, including the fan, temperature, pwer supply, and health LED infrmatin. Memry displays detailed infrmatin abut system memry. Remte Management (if supprted n system) displays infrmatin abut ilo and RILOE II cards. Miscellaneus displays infrmatin btained frm CMOS, BIOS data area, Interrupt Vectr table, TPM, and diagnstics cmpnent infrmatin. Using HP Insight Diagnstics 15

16 Resurces displays infrmatin abut the system resurces, real-time clck, and perating system settings fr certain settings, such as I/O and IRQs. Operating System displays infrmatin n the OS. Strage displays infrmatin abut the strage cntrllers and strage media cnnected t the system, including hard drives, diskette drives, and ptical drives. It als shws lgical vlume infrmatin fr all cnnected hard drives. System displays infrmatin abut the system ROM, prduct type, prcessr type and speed, and cprcessr. Scheduling a survey 1. Click the Schedule Captures buttn. 2. Chse either Weekly r Mnthly fr the capture frequency. 3. Select the day f the week/day f the mnth fr the capture. 4. Select the time fr the capture. 5. Click OK. Saving Survey cnfiguratin infrmatin 1. Click the Save buttn t save the cnfiguratin infrmatin. The saved infrmatin is fr the current view and categry n the Survey tab. 2. Save the cnfiguratin file t a USB strage device: a. Click the USB flash drive radi buttn t save the file t the USB device. If a USB strage device is nt attached t the system, the USB flash drive radi buttn des nt appear. Using HP Insight Diagnstics 16

17 b. If yu attach a USB strage device after clicking the Save buttn, click the Rescan fr devices buttn t detect the attached USB strage device. c. Enter the file name in the File Name bx. 3. Click the Save buttn. The file is saved in HTML frmat and can be viewed by any standard Web brwser. T get an XML frmatted Survey reprt, cpy the sessin file frm the \hpdiags directry. Survey sessin files are named using the frmat: SurveyDATE.xml, where DATE is the date and time the sessins were captured. A Save buttn, under Manage System Cnfiguratins, saves a cpy f the Survey XML file. Deleting a Survey sessin 1. Select Manage Cnfiguratins. 2. Check the sessins t delete. 3. Click the Delete buttn. Cmparing cnfiguratins 1. Click the Cmpare System Cnfiguratin tab. 2. Select a Survey sessin frm the Cnfiguratin 1 list. 3. Select a Survey sessin frm the Cnfiguratin 2 list. 4. Click the View Changes Only checkbx t display the differences nly. 5. Select the cnfiguratin details t view frm the View Level list: Select Summary t view summary cnfiguratin infrmatin. Click the Save buttn t save the cnfiguratin cmparisn details t a file. Using the Diagnse tab While the system is nline and the OS is perating, the HP Insight Diagnstics Diagnse feature perfrms diagnstics testing n the fllwing devices: Hard drives attached t an HP Smart Array Cntrller Pwer supplies that are deemed diagnsable Using HP Insight Diagnstics 18

19 T start a diagnstic test: 1. Click the Diagnse tab. 2. Select the device t diagnse: Select All Devices t assess the health f all lgical vlumes and pwer supplies. Select ne r mre specific lgical vlumes r pwer supplies t assess the health f the selected devices. 3. Click the Diagnse buttn. If the cmputer des nt have any lgical vlumes r pwer supplies that are diagnsable, the fllwing message appears: System des nt have any diagnsable devices installed. Using the Test tab (HP Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin nly) IMPORTANT: This feature is nly available in HP Insight Diagnstics Offline Editin. Using HP Insight Diagnstics 19

20 The ffline HP Insight Diagnstics Test feature prvides ptins fr diagnstic testing f all majr hardware cmpnents in the system. Three tests are available n the Test tab: Quick Test runs a predetermined test script fr which a sample f each hardware cmpnent is exercised and requires n user interventin. Cmplete Test runs a predetermined script fr which each hardware cmpnent is tested fully. Custm Test runs nly the tests selected. This test is the mst flexible ptin, with selectins fr specifying devices, tests, and test parameters. Running a Quick test 1. Click the Quick Test tab. 2. Select the test mde: Interactive runs all tests, sme f which require user input. Unattended runs the tests that d nt require user input. 3. Select the test duratin: Lps runs the test fr the specified number f test cycles. Ttal Test Time (minutes) runs the test fr the specified length f time. 4. Verificatin is dne by writing data t all pssible addresses that have nly 1 bit either set (1) r reset (0), having alternate bits set, having all bits high, and having all bits lw. The purpse f this test is t check fr address lines that are either shrted t grund, shrted t a highvltage signal, shrted t ther address lines, r flating (discnnected). This test alne might nt indicate a hard failure. Walk test This test verifies the integrity f the data buses cnnecting the prcessrs t the memry mdules. Verificatin is dne by writing data t all pssible addresses that have nly 1 bit either set (1) r reset (0), having alternate bits set, having all bits high, and having all bits lw. The purpse f this test is t check fr data lines that are either shrted t grund, shrted t a high-vltage signal, shrted t ther address lines, r flating (discnnected). This test alne might nt indicate a hard failure. Nise test This test verifies memry integrity by writing the inverse f the current test address t the current test address. The current test address alternates between the start and the end f the current test blck, incrementing r decrementing the address until the entire blck has been accessed. The purpse f this test is t check fr address and data bus transitin prblems when these lines are frced high and lw as rapidly as pssible. A failure f this test indicates a failure f the DIMM. March test This test is similar t a true walk bit test and is able t detect the fllwing: address faults, stuck-at faults, transitin faults, cupling faults, and linked cupling faults. These types f faults ccur when memry cells within a bit cell array affect the peratin f nearby memry cells. In many cases, static type tests d nt detect these failures. A failure f this test indicates a failure f the DIMM. Randm address test This test verifies memry integrity by running a randm pattern acrss a given test range. The addresses used t stre the patterns are selected randmly and nrmalized t fit within the current test blck. The purpse f this test is t detect intermittent memry prblems that can be caused by temperature, variable clck speeds, variable vltages, signal timing, manufacturing faults, variable refresh rates, and decay. This test is als useful in detecting memry faults that might nt be detected by ther static tests. A failure f this test indicates a failure f the DIMM. Nt all the memry in a system can be tested because f the perating system and applicatins that are installed. As a best practice, use the default setting fr each test. The default settings help ensure the maximum amunt f memry that is available is tested. T test memry thrughly, run as many lps as pssible in the time yu are alltted. If time is critical, and all memry tests cannt be run, then HP recmmends running the Randm Address test and the Nise test. These tw tests can catch the mst errrs. Trubleshting 33

34 Trubleshting disk drives and strage systems T further trublesht a disk drive, r if yu cntinue experiencing strage-related issues after running Diagnse, perfrm the fllwing tasks: Search fr knwn strage-related issues n the HP website ( T search fr custmer advisries related t PrLiant servers cnfigured with Smart Array cntrllers, use the fllwing search string: +PrLiant +Advisry +"Smart Array". Update the cntrller driver and firmware revisin and any drive-related sftware cmpnents such as management agents and strage utilities. Reseat physical drives and cntrllers. Check drive cables fr any signs f damage r bent pins. When pwering dwn a system using external strage, pwer dwn the server befre pwering dwn the external strage. When pwering up the system, pwer n the external strage befre pwering n the server. This actin prevents the pssibility f drives being failed errneusly by the cntrller. A server pwer failure befre the test, can als cause errneus failures. If yu are able t identify a bad bay, replace the hard drive backplane. If the backplane and drive cables have already been replaced, the prblem may be a bad cntrller. Determine if the cntrller is gd by mving it t anther server. Bt the server, and watch fr any POST errrs. If the cntrller has already been replaced, the prblem is likely t be a bad backplane r cable. IMPORTANT: T minimize dwntime, HP recmmends that steps invlving the reseating f drives and cntrllers be perfrmed simultaneusly.
