2 From the Director Entrepreneurship is tough to spell but perhaps even tougher to define. J.K. Rowling. Bill Gates. Coco Chanel. Henry Ford. Mark Zuckerberg. Oprah Winfrey. What do all these people have in common? They all worked hard for their success. They pushed for what they believed in. Entrepreneurs work hard, they are passionate about what they do and they see a bigger role in their ventures than just making money. Entrepreneurs are often seen as renegades, and that is just fine with us. Be aggressive, be a game changer, do not take no for an answer we love renegades. The s approach to creating great entrepreneurs at Clarkson is to give them a big sandbox to play in, and lots of sand toys to play with. Our students build exciting new ventures in their first few months on campus. They also create products to support a brand, they provide leadership and training to practicing entrepreneurs and they win competitions. Our approach is all about the experience and we support that experience with world-class faculty who don t just teach they practice what they teach by building companies in their spare time. Marc Compeau Director of the for Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship is Our Business Developing successful entrepreneurs who know how to grow a business, harness new technologies, and seize opportunities in the marketplace is a long-standing tradition at Clarkson University. The for Entrepreneurship, located in Clarkson s School of Business, builds on that tradition by drawing on the expertise and skills of Clarkson faculty and students to educate and train regional entrepreneurs to successfully receive and manage start-up funding and grow their companies through sound management practices. That experience provides a fertile training ground for our students, who gain firsthand experience and build management, marketing and financial skills by working with micro-businesses and start-ups across northern New York. 3 Equity for Education Entrepreneurship in the Classroom Question: The Young Entrepreneur Award Program All universities have prerequisites: math, science, communication. Clarkson has a few more: passion, innovation, realworld smarts. Students who possess these unique qualities may be eligible for the Young Entrepreneur Award program, which takes investing in the future of Clarkson students to an entirely new level. Featured in Money magazine s September 2011 issue, the program gives students selected into the program at our spring business plan competition the opportunity to attend Clarkson tuition free through a combination of meritbased financial aid and the University s acquisition of an ownership interest in their business ventures. Brett Konopaske 13 Global Supply Chain Management and Law Studies minor Brett Konopaske is a junior from North Granby, Connecticut. In addition to the FIRE Dept., he has also worked as a mentor with the North Country Grown Cooperative to assist farmers in developing business plans. On campus, Brett is actively involved in the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, as well as the Clarkson Sports Car Club. Brett has had an internship in Hartford, Connecticut, with Travelers Insurance and spent a semester studying abroad in Hong Kong. Matt Turcotte is Clarkson s first Young Entrepreneur Award recipient. He launched a web development firm as a high-school junior, and today he s successfully growing his company while earning a business degree. The deal? Clarkson owns a percentage of Matt s company in lieu of tuition while Matt gets a powerful education, office space and mentoring from experienced alumni entrepreneurs. Clarkson is among the top 100 best undergraduate business schools in the nation. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I feel fortunate that I attend a university that is as passionate about my business as I am and is so supportive. 4 Learning by Doing At the, our approach is all about experience. The rotational internship program at give business students the opportunity to work with local entrepreneurs in need of assistance. Our student interns are passionate, innovative and determined. Their projects include developing marketing plans, teaching seminars to local business owners, using social media, running the s businesses, Entrepreneur Coffee and MoJoe, and recruiting new members of the team. FIRE Dept. Fresh Ideas for Real Entrepreneurs The identifies real needs of regional entrepreneurs, articulates them in a simple objective, and gives the students in the FIRE Dept. a hard deadline. If they meet the objective by the deadline, they re paid a success bonus. Each semester this selective group of students puts out at least 20 fires for small business owners. "This internship allowed me to connect with a local entrepreneur in ways that wouldn't have been possible without the program. I was able to use the business knowledge and professional skills I have gained at Clarkson University to help a business grow and succeed. This experience, to both the student and the entrepreneur, is invaluable." Lydia Mellnitz 11 Clarkson University Alumni Entrepreneur Hall of Fame Clarkson alumni are inducted into the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in recognition of a lifetime of entrepreneurial achievement that encompasses the ideals of entrepreneurial activity education, application and giving back. My Small Business 101 The offers this innovative, cost free course as a way for small business owners to learn critical elements of operating their business. interns work with the press, register clients and assist in the delivery of the course. Entrepreneur Coffee The s student interns launched Entrepreneur Coffee, a micro-roasted coffee brand, as a way to support local SMALL BUSINESSES 0RODUCTS ARE SOURCED from regional businesses and 100% of the profits generated are invested back into small business development. interns apply their classroom learning in marketing, product development, accounting, strategy, finance and human resources on a daily basis. Alicia Cabrera 15 0OLITICAL 3CIENCE Alicia Cabrera, the s Education Coordinator, is from North Chili, New York. In her position with the, she organizes external classes, provides strategic guidance for small business owners, and has been involved in marketing and external relations for the Center. Working at the has increased my self-confidence and given me a chance to work with upperclassmen early in my career at Clarkson. I m looking forward to growing my professional networks and working with small business owners in our community. 4 COO of JEM-X Emily Saramak 13 JEM-X JEM-X is a student-run manufacturing company that started in response to a telephone call. A former Clarkson student called to request help to meet the demand for his new product, an innovative piece of exercise equipment. As with many startups, his company was struggling to scale production from his garage to a larger facility. In response to this request, the started JEM-X and appointed current Clarkson students to the leadership team. These student leaders leased manufacturing space and are now responsible for negotiating contracts with suppliers, building a supply chain and delivering products that meet customer specifications. This project was so successful that the students are currently in negotiations with other startups to manufacture products designed by Clarkson students and faculty. 5 Hall of Fame Inductee Elmer Gates 50 After graduating from Clarkson University in 1950, Gates served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Korea during the Korean conflict. He then enjoyed a rewarding 31-year career with General Electric prior to joining Fuller Company, a manufacturer of large equipment for the cement industry in 1982 as president and chief operating officer. Under his direction, the company flourished to become a world leader in the industry. During his tenure at Fuller, Gates combined a spirit of entrepreneurship with the disciplines essential to long-term business success. Following his retirement from the company, he was instrumental in starting Embassy Bank for Lehigh Valley and currently serves as lead director of the board after serving eight years as chairman. Gates was inducted into the Clarkson University Alumni Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in June 2011.
