5 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program Results of the Rough Design Phase at GP-IE level: Design choice 1: The redesign will be such that each student can do all his/ her core courses and specialization electives in the first year. Design choice 2: We define tracks, that consist of: (i) Courses that belong together; (ii) Master thesis subjects for which those courses are relevant. Design choice 3: Students will be coupled to mentors in two steps: Before the end of the first quarter, a student will be coupled to a track. Before the end of the second quarter, a student will be coupled to a mentor. 6 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program: Specific Design Choices at OML Master Program Level Based on the Graduate School Guidelines and the General IE Design Choices, we adhere to the following points in our redesign: All courses have a workload of 5 ects credits We need to allow for individual programs and choices as much as possible, under guidance of a mentor There can be a maximum 30 ects credits in the core An international experience of minimum 15 ects credits is required

7 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program: Specific Design Choices at OML Master Program Level (continued) There must be room for at least 15 ects credits of free electives (could be part of international experience) All core courses and specialization electives need to be completed before starting the international semester International experience will be programmed as a semester studying abroad For excellent students, international experience can also be thesis project abroad or a one-quarter research internship

8 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program: Specific Design Choices at OML Master Program Level Resulting Specific Design Choices: Specific OML Design Choice A: The IE Master Operations Management & Logistics contains core courses (general and track specific) which represent all disciplinary groups contributing to the master program, i.e., i) human performance management, ii) information systems, and ii) operations, planning, accounting, and control. Each OML student will have followed at least one course from each of the disciplinary groups within OML.

9 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program: Specific Design Choices at OML Master Program Level Specific OML Design Choice B: A methodological basis and design competency must be provided in the IE Master Operations Management & Logistics, via core courses. The design issues show differences between tracks and therefore there will be special design courses for each track, whereas we propose a common methodology course.

10 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program: Specific Design Choices at OML Master Program Level Specific OML Design Choice C: The IE Master Operations Management & Logistics will offer five thematic tracks and one free track targeted to honors students. Each student will be assigned to one of those six tracks.

11 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program: Specific Design Choices at OML Master Program Level Specific OML Design Choice D: Each thematic track contains core courses and specialization electives. The students must follow all track core courses and at least three courses from the list of specialization electives, which leaves room for free electives -in addition to the ones to be followed during the international semester- (if the student takes nominal number of courses, a minimum of three free TU/e electives can be followed from programs other than OML). The free track will be populated with specialization electives to be approved by the personal mentor.

13 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program Core Courses (All tracks): 1JM11 Performance Enhancement 1XXYY Research Methods (new course) This course has methodological orientation and will cover a.o. the following topics: philosophical analysis of operations management research, design oriented research, operations management modeling, advanced statistical research methods, case study research, theory and data driven modeling, and generalizations.

14 Redesign of IE-OML MSc Program The students also need to acquire sufficient knowledge in financing and accounting. This can be obtained from 1CM22 Integrated Financial & Operations Management, as well as a 3rd year BSc course (such as the current 1CK40/1CK80), or a course during the international semester. Furthermore, the students need to have sufficient knowledge in programming and simulation at the start of the program. In case this is missing, the student needs to follow a homologation course (such as 1BK50) which will consume from the free elective space of the student.

26 Master s Thesis The thesis will consist of three elements: i. Literature survey (5 ects) ii. The literature survey is to be completed prior to the start of the thesis project and can be conducted during the international semester. It will be evaluated with a grade out of 10. Project proposal (0 ects) The project proposal is to be conducted as the first part of a thesis project and it will be evaluated on a GO/NO-GO basis. iii. MSc Thesis project (30 ects)

27 Transition Both the current and the revised Master Programs are fully equivalent: They have the same governmental license (CROHO number) They have the same program objectives (Dublin descriptors) They have the same study load: 2 years = 120 ECTS = 3360 study hours They offer the same final qualifications (design /engineering) They offer the international Master of Science title, and the Dutch ir title

28 Transition What happens to existing students following the old system? They will continue with their program Not all elective courses survived the transition Some new courses are offered The schedule of courses may have changed (in another quarter/semester than current) So, please check your study program carefully

31 Transition Check your planning asap, because you may need to follow different courses. If you can no longer follow a course that was in your original list: make an appointment with your mentor to discuss your new program. Inform the teaching administration by submitting a new course list form (signed) If you reach an agreement with your mentor that you have an unsolvable problem, inform the study advisor (Kirkels) and together with her make an appeal to the exam committe.
