1 A. General rules Yuan Ze University, College of Management Doctoral Program Study Guide (Academic Year 2010 Sep. ~) a. This guide is written according to Yuan Ze University s graduate student regulations. b. College of Management s doctoral programs (hereinafter doctoral programs), College of Management s Organization Management doctoral program, Marketing Management doctoral program, E-business & Service Management doctoral program, Technology & Service Innovation Management doctoral program, Finance doctoral program, and International Business Management doctoral program (hereinafter Organization Management group, Marketing Management group, E-business & Service Management group, Technology & Service Innovation Management group, Finance group, and International Business Management group) B. Length of study years and school regulation for credits a. The study length of years for a doctoral program is 2-7 years. b. School regulation for credits and compulsory/elective courses 1. Students of doctoral programs need to complete a minimum of 30 credits and a doctoral thesis. Basic compulsory courses, 3 credits : - Research Methodology for Social Sciences Other compulsory courses, 9 credits : Organization Management group, Marketing Management group, E-business & Service Management group, Technology & Service Innovation Management group: - Strategy theories - Organization theories - Microeconomic analysis or Econometrics Finance group: 3 of following 4 courses need to be taken, - Microeconomic Analysis - Econometrics - Organization Theories or Strategic Theories 1/21

2 International business management group: 3 of following 4 courses need to be taken, - Microeconomic Analysis - Econometrics - Organization Theories - Strategic Theories Elective courses in the major field, 9 credits : - At least 3 courses, please refer to the list of elective courses. - To take the courses out of your major or group but in business or equivalent field, please fill out the application form under the instruction of your mentor, director, or thesis advisor. The College Council Committee will approve the application. Research method courses, 3 credits : - Students of doctoral programs need to take one of the appointed research method and analysis courses in modules of prospective programs. This course is one of the subjects in Qualification exam. Elective courses in the minor field, not included in the graduation credits : - Students need to complete 2 of appointed courses in modules of prospective programs, the certificate will be issued by the College. Other elective courses. Pre-study courses, not included in the graduation credits: - Students of Finance group need to pre-take Financial Management, Investment and Derivative Securities and to inform the College for at least a week before the starting date of each academic semester. c. In the period of 2 years before joining into the doctoral programs, students should attend academic speeches as elective courses for modules of prospective programs which will not be included in the graduation credits. Students should hold an intellectual speech at least once before the doctoral oral defense. (Academic speeches are given by speech holders whose speeches are belonged to academic institution. Only the students of doctoral programs have to attend. 2/21

Examination Students joining doctoral programs need to fill out the notification of learning progress (as attachment 2, including examinations for qualification and courses, as well as thesis proposal) by certain period of time and pass examinations listed below. Average of 2 qualification examinations scores under 40 means that the school needs to take the action of dismission. Remarks 3. Students who fail the examinations will be required to resit the course(s) at the next available opportunity. 4. Students will have one opportunity to resit the component of the examination(s) they fail. 5. If students cancel the examinations before scheduled dates, any cancellation request will constitute to failure of the examination. 3/21

Marketing Management At least Behavioral Decision Making, Marketing Strategy, Marketing Theory, Special Topics in Marketing. E-business & held once Information and E-Business Strategies, Service Design and System Service per Innovation, and Service Management. Management semester (a Technology & Service Innovation week before the starting date of the Science & Technology and Service innovation Management Theory and Special Topics in Science & Technology and Innovation Management. Management semester) International Business Management International Business Theory (I) and International Business Theory (II) Finance Remarks Financial Theory, Advanced Corporate Finance, and Advanced Investment 1. Examinations for Modules to be hold on the same day, scores to be marked individually and over 70 (including 70) means pass. 2. Students can submit the request for examinations for modules whenever the scope of examinations has been lectured. 6. 5 D. Thesis 1. Supervisors Students need to apply for the acceptance about the thesis supervisor with the application form as attachment 3 within 6 months after passing the examinations of modules. Students may apply for one supervisor or above with providing instruction together, one of them should be participating faculty in the group which students major in or in modules of the prospective programs. Before finalization of supervisor issue, the College will indicate one participating faculty as the mentor of students for study advising. Doctor candidates need to decide the topic and then start to draft the thesis under the instruction of supervisors. 2. Change of supervisor There should be a semester as an interval between the time to apply change of thesis supervisor and the time to apply for acceptance about the thesis supervisor. Also, the time to apply change of thesis supervisor will not be allowed in the same semester with the application for acceptance. Students need to fill out the form Application for Change of Supervisor as attachment 4 and provide the agreements from both previous and current supervisors as necessary documents for College Council Committee. To apply for change of supervisor is with limitation of one time chance during the doctoral program. The school will not recognize the scores students already got if the process of application and agreement in between had not been made. 3. Thesis Committee Students may apply for the thesis test and constitute the thesis committee since the 5 th semester of the program. The committee for each student is in charge of reviewing the proposal and joining the oral defense. After the College consult with supervisors to arrange members of committee, there will be five to nine scholars studying in related fields to constitute the committee. Above 50% of members are professors or associate professors. Above 50% of members must not be from the department unit of YZU offering the program, and there should be a Chair person nominated by the committee to coordinate issues. The attachment 5 is a document to keep record of committee members for the College. Any change of the list needs to be updated as soon as the validation of the change. To avoid invalid identification of supervisor and thesis committee working out any result about the program, which the school should not admit, students should exclude his relatives who are family members within 3 generations (grand parents, parents, wife, husband, uncles, aunts, sons, daughters, cousins and nephew) to be the supervisor or members of committee before happening. Once discovered, the scores for oral defense 5/21

6 will be invalid and the doctoral degree will be invalid, too. The certification has to be returned. 4. Proposal The proposal needs to be arranged and passed within two and a half years after passing the examination of modules students have taken. The application documents under the agreement of supervisor and the director of the College include - Notification of learning progress (as Attachment 2) - Name list of thesis committee members (as Attachment 5) - Transcript of doctor program study - Summary for Proposal (as Attachment 8) Above documents will be announced during the College Council Committee for reference. The marking process of proposal will be anonymous for committee members showing up during the oral defense and will work out an average score. The maximum is 100, 70 is a minimum of pass level. Students failing the proposal may apply for an extra chance in next semester with limitation of one time chance. 5. Demonstration of Achievement Before students apply for oral defense, there must be either one paper being published or accepted by SSCI or SCI, or two papers by TSSCI, FLI, ECONLIT or periodicals listed in ABI. Periodicals which are not suggested in the list of ECONLIT or ABI have to be passed by the College Council Committee. Then the oral defense can be held. The papers must be a part of Ph.D. program thesis or collaborated in writing with thesis supervisor. Yuan Ze University has to be listed in the institutions that thesis belonged to. Definition of one paper: (a) Collaborated by one to three people (one must be an assistant professor or senior in the College): one doctorate student can list this paper as one of his/her research paper. (b) Collaborated by four people (two must be assistant professors or seniors and one must be in the College): one doctorate student can list this paper as one of his/her research paper. (c) Collaborated by five to seven people (three must be assistant professors or seniors and two must be in the College): one doctorate student can list this paper as 0.5 of his/her research achievement. (d) Collaborated by above seven people: cannot be listed. 6/21

7 6. Oral Defense Students should follow the process of application and pay attention to the school calendar. The necessary documents need to be filled out and sent to the College office are: (a) Draft of thesis (b) Thesis Recognition from Supervisor (as Attachment 6) (c) Summary for Graduation (as Attachment 9) The marking process of proposal will be anonymous for committee members showing up during the oral defense and will work out an average score. The maximum is 100, 70 is a minimum of pass level. Students failing the proposal may apply for resit in the next semester, but only one opportunity will be given. Some unforeseeable events might prevent students from taking the examinations at scheduled date. In this situation, a notification (Attachment 7, Notification of Withdrawal of Application) should be sent by the deadline announced by the College. The withdrawal of application has to be sent if necessary with a limitation of max one time chance. Over the due day it will be treated as failure once. Students could make a complaint to the College in case of following situation happened: Students have reached the qualification to apply oral defense and it is the last year to complete the study, but the agreement of supervisor has not been approached. In case of cheating or plagiarism, even the degree has been awarded, the College will inspect the incident or countermand the degree and certificate when needed. 7/21
