ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Charles Sturt University will admit you to an undergraduate course, subject to a place being available, if it believes you have a reasonable prospect of completing the course. In determining your prospects of success in the course, CSU will consider your previous studies and/or other attainments and experience. Some courses have additional selection criteria, where you have the opportunity to showcase yourself, or express your interest and enthusiasm to pursue that career path. Refer to individual course descriptions for details. Australian secondary studies 2015 Australian Year 12 students Admission is normally based on your ATAR or equivalent. You may also be admitted on the basis of a strong performance in subjects that are relevant to the course you wish to study. No prerequisite subjects are specifi ed for admission to courses at CSU. Some courses, however, indicate assumed knowledge subjects that provide the level of knowledge necessary for successful completion of fi rst-year university subjects. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have studied the appropriate subjects to undertake the course you choose. Assumed knowledge and recommended studies subjects are listed in the course entries. Offers made to applicants who have an ATAR below the published cut-off CSU has a number of alternative pathways for admission, which may allow 2015 Year 12 students to receive an offer to a course even though they have an ATAR below the published cut-off. 2 Previous Australian Year 12 CSU will consider admission on the basis of previous Australian Year 12 studies. Other studies CSU will consider interstate equivalents of the NSW HSC and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Australian tertiary studies Studies such as those listed below are considered indicators that you can complete a course at the University. Note that some courses may give different weightings to these indicators: a course completed or part-completed at a university, college of advanced education, or other accredited tertiary institution an approved course completed or part-completed at a TAFE college or other accredited post-secondary institution, including the Tertiary Preparation Certifi cate (TPC) approved foundation studies or bridging courses subjects studied through CSU s Single Subject Study program or at another university. Overseas qualifications Applicants with overseas qualifi cations should check their eligibility by referring to tables 7 and 8 in Part 1 for information on overseas secondary qualifi cations, or contact CSU to discuss eligibility for admission. If you hold overseas secondary or tertiary qualifi cations from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language profi ciency read page 16 in Part 1 and visit Alternative entry and pathways CSU will consider the following attainment and experience in determining your prospects for success: voluntary or paid work experience performance in exams conducted by professional bodies nursing qualifi cations gained through hospital-based training completion of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) or unitest. Vocational experience The University places considerable importance on vocational experience in determining the likelihood of your success in a course. For some courses your admission rank will automatically be increased by up to four points if previous vocational experience is closely related to the course you wish to study. Regional entry Regional Bonus Points Regional Bonus Points can help students from regional areas gain admission to CSU. If you are a Year 12 student who attended school in a regional area, or a non-year 12 applicant who lives in a regional area, you will automatically have an extra fi ve points added to your admission rank. SCHOOLS RECOMMENDATION SCHEMES Charles Sturt University also participates in the Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS). The aim of CSU s early entry program is to attract current school leavers from high schools across NSW, ACT and Victoria who, during their senior high school years, have been identifi ed as consistent achievers with the potential to succeed at university study Year 12 students could be guaranteed an offer of a place in a full-time on-campus course before their results are released. Information updated 28 August EDUCATIONAL ACCESS SCHEMES CSU participates in Educational Access Schemes (EAS) for people who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage and whose educational performance has been affected by circumstances beyond their control during Year 11 and/or Year 12 or equivalent. CSU participates in both EAS through UAC and the Special Consideration for Admission (SCA) scheme direct through CSU. Eligibility for either scheme does not guarantee admission, but may offer bonus points to help you compete for a place. Read section 2.11 in Part 1 for further information on EAS. EQUITY SCHOLARSHIPS CSU offers two types of equity scholarships the CSU Equity Scholarships and Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships, which are open to all eligible applicants applying to or enrolled at CSU. All CSU Equity and Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship applications are processed centrally through UAC. Read section 6.6 in Part 1 for further information on Equity Scholarships. SPECIAL CONSIDERATION Special Consideration for Admission (SCA) aims to address educational disadvantage, taking into account circumstances that may have impacted on your ability to perform well educationally. The scheme is not a substitute or alternative pathway to university, and you must also apply for your course in the usual manner. SCA is for students applying direct to CSU, including elite athletes and performers. All other applicants should apply for Educational Access Schemes through UAC as mentioned above. INTERNATIONAL FEE-PAYING APPLICANTS Some international fee-paying applicants apply through UAC; others apply direct to CSU. Read sections 1.4 and 1.5 in Part 1 for further information on how to apply. COURSES AVAILABLE BY DIRECT APPLICATION Applications for distance education study are made direct to CSU, not through UAC. Further information is available at If you are looking to study part-time on-campus in a course that is normally full-time, you should call CSU on 1800 DEGREE ( ) to confi rm whether part-time study is available. You should also ask for advice on your prospects of receiving an offer before you submit your application. DISTANCE EDUCATION CSU also offers courses by distance education. You must apply direct to CSU for admission to these courses, not through UAC. On-time applications for study in session 1 close Thursday 29 October ENROLMENT Acceptance of offer Acceptance and enrolment procedures are provided to successful applicants when they receive an offer of a place in a course. On-campus accommodation is guaranteed for fi rst-year students, but you may not receive your preferred accommodation type if you apply too late. Advanced standing/academic credit If you believe you qualify for credit towards your proposed course, talk to the Course Director for advice. You may be required to submit transcripts or other documents to support your application for credit. Applications for credit are considered during Orientation Week. Deferment of offer Refer to Table 6 in Part 1. Fees and charges All students must pay student contributions for a Commonwealth-supported place (CSP); read section 6.2 in Part 1. Loans CSU offers a loan scheme to provide short-term and emergency fi nancial assistance to enable students to continue their studies. Scholarships As every student has different needs, talents and ambitions, CSU offers scholarships that help with access and equity, assist with travel, textbooks or accommodation, or reward excellence and achievement. There is a CSU scholarship to suit almost everyone s interests, background or circumstances. We want to see all our students succeed in their studies, and go on to thrive and make a positive impact on their communities and in their own lives throughout their careers. A scholarship can help ease university costs or simply provide you with the budget fl exibility you need to focus on your study. Our scholarships are funded by government as well as private industry and professions, individuals, CSU alumni (past students and staff), and community groups, providing valuable links and opportunities. Access and equity scholarships provide support to those who may have experienced educational disadvantage, live in rural or remote areas, people from Indigenous backgrounds, refugees, and students with low socioeconomic circumstance or who have disabilities. For further information, visit ACCOMMODATION CSU has the biggest variety of on-campus accommodation and the most rooms of any university operated accommodation in Australia. Almost 3,000 student rooms are available across CSU s campuses in Albury Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga, and you can choose to include Meal Credits or Flexi Points in your accommodation package for meals at outlets on campus. On-campus accommodation is guaranteed for students in their fi rst year of study at CSU, although some accommodation types may fi ll more quickly. Accommodation is fully furnished with shared common areas and kitchen facilities. Most bathrooms are shared; however, some newer accommodation offers ensuite rooms. An extensive residential support network exists at each campus, and you will be connected to the University s computer network and the internet. Two privately run residential colleges also operate at Wagga Wagga campus. STUDY LINK subjects are short, online and self-paced, and are available to students who are seeking to gain or renew skills and knowledge in areas such as essay writing, study skills, online learning, mathematics, physics, anatomy and chemistry. STUDY LINK s preparatory subjects are non-credit bearing, so they will help you understand the expectations of tertiary study in a more relaxed way. Read page 150 How to read course descriptions Recommended studies: One unit of science. Major studies: Agribusiness, agriculture, agronomy, livestock production. Practical experience: Fourth-year students complete an industry internship equivalent to half a year of study. Honours: High achieving students have the option of undertaking honours in their third and fourth years. Students undertaking honours will complete a research project in their fourth year of study. Professional recognition: Membership of professional societies (eg Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology). Career opportunities: Examples include agronomist, farm manager, livestock officer/manager, researcher, extension officer, catchment management officer, environmental officer, landcare officer and agriculture/science teacher (with a B Teaching (Secondary) available at CSU). Additional information: Coursework provides knowledge and skills within a practical context, covering plant, animal and environmental sciences and agribusiness and rural systems studies. Recommended studies: Senior Science, Chemistry, TAFE electives (Senior First Aid and Medical Terminology). Major studies: Paramedicine. Practical experience: Extensive practical experience in simulated conditions and clinical settings. Professional recognition: This course has received the formal endorsement of the Ambulance Service of NSW and accreditation by the Council of Ambulance Authorities. Career opportunities: Examples include employment as an ambulance service paramedic, defence force medic and industry paramedic. B Occupational Therapy 1 Albury Wodonga CSP 4F Assumed knowledge: English (Standard). Recommended studies: Biology. Major studies: Biological sciences, occupational therapy theory and practice, social sciences. Practical experience: A minimum of 1,000 hours of fieldwork in a range of health, community, education, private practice and other settings. Honours: High achieving students have the option of undertaking honours in their third and fourth years. Students undertaking honours will complete a research project in their fourth year of study. Professional recognition: The course has full accreditation with Occupational Therapy Australia and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Graduates are eligible to work throughout Australia and internationally. Career opportunities: Examples include hospital and community services, work rehabilitation, schools, private practice, rural and regional health practice, health promotion, community development, research, rehabilitation centres and organisations for people with disabilities (eg Scope, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation). Additional information: Occupational therapists focus on developing and maintaining people s abilities to carry out activities by helping them to develop new skills, change the environment, or modify their activities with knowledge of behavioural, social and biomedical sciences. Major studies: Health sciences, human biological sciences, rehabilitation. Practical experience: Workplace learning in a range of health settings. Career opportunities: Examples include allied health support, case management, rehabilitation co-ordination, health project management, community health and health promotion, disability services and aged care. Additional information: Graduates will have a diverse range of generic skills and knowledge in health and rehabilitation leading to employment in both the public and private health sectors. This degree provides a pathway to courses in health disciplines (eg medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, speech pathology). Students may choose to exit from the course with the University Certificate in Health and Rehabilitation Science upon satisfactory completion of the first eight subjects or with the AssocDeg Health and Rehabilitation Science upon satisfactory completion of the first 14 subjects. Additional selection criteria: In addition to applying through UAC by Wednesday 30 September 2015, applicants must complete a compulsory online Supplementary Application Form. This form will be available at and must be submitted online to CSU by Wednesday 30 September Major studies: Oral hygiene, oral therapy. Practical experience: Students will undertake intense clinical practice sessions using state-of-the-art simulation and clinic equipment in new purpose-built facilities. Students will be required to attend external clinical placements within the region. These may include but are not limited to CSU clinics at Albury Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga. Travel, accommodation and related expenses for these professional placements will be the responsibility of the student. Professional recognition: This course is accredited by the Australian Dental Council. Graduates are eligible for registration with the Dental Board of Australia and membership of the Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists Association. Career opportunities: Examples include clinical practice in dental hygiene and dental therapy, public dental services, dental and health administration, education, industry- or university-based research and consumer advocacy. Additional information: Students are required to purchase dental equipment and instrument kits. Qualified dental therapists are clinicians who examine and treat diseases of the teeth in children, adolescents and young adults. Major studies: Physiotherapy. Practical experience: Approximately 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of rural and metropolitan settings. Practical experience: Over 1,000 hours of clinical practice in a range of health and community settings, including the on-campus podiatry clinic. Professional recognition: This course is approved by all Australian, New Zealand and UK podiatry registration boards. Additional information: Students develop an understanding of the theoretical and practical components of podiatry, with a focus on both general and specialist knowledge and skills. Students become knowledgeable and skilled professionals who are able to provide effective assessment and intervention. Additional selection criteria: If you are not a 2015 Year 12 applicant, selection is based on evidence of successful post-secondary study and relevant experiences in health, education and/or disability sectors. Major studies: Speech pathology, including biomedical and behavioural sciences, impairments and intervention in communication and swallowing, linguistics, normal development. Practical experience: Clinical fieldwork in years 2, 3 and 4 of the course. Honours: High achieving students have the option of undertaking honours in their third and fourth years. Students undertaking honours will complete a research project in their fourth year of study. Professional recognition: Accredited by Speech Pathology Australia. Career opportunities: Examples include speech pathologists in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, education and community settings, disability organisations, health promotion and administration, research organisations and private practice. Additional information: Students develop a working understanding of both the theoretical and practical components of speech pathology, with an emphasis on both general and specialist knowledge and skills. B Nursing GradDip Clinical Practice (Paramedic) 1 Bathurst CSP 4.5F Assumed knowledge: English (Standard), any two units of science. Recommended studies: Mathematics; Biology; Chemistry; Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE); WorkCover-approved first aid certificate; Mental Health First Aid course. Major studies: Nursing, paramedicine. Minor studies: Bioscience and pathophysiology in nursing, health and nursing, Indigenous culture, primary health care. Practical experience: During the B Nursing component, a total of 20 weeks of clinical placement in a variety of healthcare facilities. Preparation for nursing clinical placements occurs in simulated clinical environments in on-campus nursing laboratories. During the GradDip Clinical Practice (Paramedic), an internship with an approved out-of-hospital setting such as a statutory ambulance authority. Professional recognition: Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a registered nurse. GradDip Clinical Practice (Paramedic) is a new course that has been granted provisional accreditation from the Council of Ambulance Authorities. A program is eligible for full accreditation after the first cohort of graduates have at least 12 months of practical experience following graduation. Career opportunities: Examples include registered nurses in acute care hospitals, community health, mental health services, disability services, rehabilitation services, aged care services, operating theatres, emergency departments, paediatric units and women s and men s health centres. Graduates may pursue a career as an ambulance service paramedic, defence force medic or industry paramedic and there are career opportunities for experienced registered nurses in management, education and research. The first three years of the course are composed of the B Nursing. Following completion of the nursing component and gaining certification as a registered nurse, students move on to undertake their graduate studies in paramedicine. Students will complete the GradDip Clinical Practice (Paramedic) by distance education, with significant online and blended learning support.
