11 COMMUNITY MUSIC PROGRAMS INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAMS Tertiary students/ Pre-service Teachers Tertiary students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate in any of the courses in the Summer School Music Program. The Music Theatre and Jazz courses are particularly suitable for young adults and the repertoire in these courses has particular appeal to this age group. Music Education students are particularly encouraged to become involved in the Summer School Music Program. The education courses on offer here provide invaluable training in a range of specialist areas: Early Childhood Education and Primary and Secondary Classroom Education. These courses provide the depth and breadth in training which equip participants for confident and expert delivery of music education within the school system. Students should be aware that the Australian Kodály Certificate is highly valued by both state and private employers and this qualification is recognised by a number of universities as providing pathways for postgraduate study, both in Australia and internationally. Many students are now participating in the Summer School Music Programs during the course of their undergraduate study and in this way, completing an additional qualification by the time of graduation. While students must complete these courses for assessment to qualify for the AKC, participants may also opt to take any of the Summer School Program courses for audit. Tertiary students should also check with their institutions about possible credit towards their university studies. Community Choir Members of the public are welcome to participate in one of the choirs on offer throughout the course. Options for involvement are SATB choir (Dr Laszlo Nemes), SSA choir (Ms Katalin Kortvesi) or Jazz Choir (Mr Pete Churchill). The 2016 Summer School will provide a range of opportunities for string players and caters for players at both intermediate and advanced levels. It is expected that all students have a good grounding in string technique and performance so that they could participate in both large and small ensemble playing. Students should have a number of pieces prepared which could be performed in a master class situation and where students demonstrate advanced playing ability, chamber music ensembles will be formed as appropriate. For more advanced players, the Summer School Music Program provides the opportunity for students to play in small ensembles or chamber groups. Chamber music provides unique opportunities for the development of deep musicianship and ensemble skills, and in this sense, is an essential part of the maturation of a more sophisticated and serious musician. Players must not only demonstrate musical independence but ultimately, assume the responsibility for musical decision making and performance outcomes. In the ideal situation, participants would enrol as an existing ensemble (e.g. quartet, trio, quintet) and would have already been working together as a performing ensemble. However, it is important to recognise that, for a wide variety of reasons, many students may not be in an existing ensemble or be able to participate in the Summer School with their own string ensemble, and in this case, the organisers will endeavour to place students of equivalent playing ability in groups so that they can work together in the small group/chamber group situation. N.B. Where students enrol in the Summer Music Program as a complete ensemble (i.e. String quartet) a 25% discount on fees for each member of the group applies. String ensembles who are performing at a sophisticated level may be invited to perform in either a lunchtime concert during the program, or as part of the Final Concert (6-9pm, Friday January 15, 2016). Students who aspire to these performances should be confidently performing repertoire of Haydn or Bartok for example. Where students are perhaps younger and not so experienced or skilled in their playing, they will participate in a range of activities which are designed to help develop musical skills and knowledge more broadly. All participants will be involved in daily graded musicianship classes (appropriate to their experience and ability), performance and demonstration workshops, but according to ability and experience, players have a number of options throughout the day: choir, 20 21
