2 MUSIC AT BURNSIDE HIGH SCHOOL At Burnside High School we are pleased to offer a three-tier system of music tuition at Year 9 level. This is to ensure that students are catered for in the best possible way, according to their musical experience and aptitude. 1 The Specialist Music Programme is for students of superior musical ability. It is expected that they will have a commitment to Music as a focus of study throughout their time at Burnside High School. Students are required to audition for this programme and will be placed within the West Division Performance Class. Students unsure of their level of achievement are encouraged to audition. 2 For many years Burnside High School has offered very successful courses for Performance Music students. These courses continue to run in each school Division. Entry is by application only, giving an outline of the student s musical experience. Practical music ensembles including Junior Strings, Junior Concert Band and Junior Jazz Band are timetabled into the school day for all Performance Music students. Academically, it is expected that the Performance Music Classes will be at the same above-average level in each Division. Please note that the school reserves the right to place students where we think the students will function best in their learning. 3 For students with limited musical experience general music classes offer a range of activities including practical sessions on recorder, keyboard and guitar. All Year 9 students are involved in core music if they are not in either of the other performance classes. 3 SPECIALIST MUSIC PROGRAMME 2014 The Specialist Music Programme is set up to provide the best possible standard of education, training and musical opportunities for students of high musical talent. It offers a seamless and co-ordinated progression of learning from junior primary school, through secondary school to university. It offers students the stimulus of working with others of similar high musical calibre. Four institutions situated in close proximity within Christchurch are cooperating to provide this unique opportunity for musically talented students. - Westburn Primary School - Burnside High School - The School of Music of the University of Canterbury - The Christchurch College of Education A joint Board of Studies oversees the professional functioning of the Programme, and at every level the students work under the guidance of the staff of the School. Year 9 students admitted to the Programme for 2014 will be enrolled within the Performance Music Class in West Division. This class will meet the usual requirements of the general New Zealand Curriculum. In addition to the music activities that are part of the curriculum for all students at the school, an enriched timetabled music programme will include the following: A - Performance Solo performance on chosen instrument or voice Keyboard skills (for non pianists) Choral singing Ensemble performance - Junior Strings Junior Concert Band Junior Jazz Band Junior Guitar Ensemble Junior Performance Choir An extensive range of extra curricular ensembles is also available. B C D - Creative Music - Musical Knowledge - Aural Skills

4 TUITION Tuition in the main instrumental study will be on a one-to-one basis, and students in the Programme will be required to learn from a teacher approved by the Board of Studies. Other performance studies will be in groups. Certain studies, such as Chamber Music, will be carried out in conjunction with the College of Education and the School of Music of the University of Canterbury. COSTS At this stage it will be necessary for parents to meet the cost of individual tuition on the student s main instrument. The general music programmes at Burnside High School are part of the school s normal activities and are therefore subject to no additional costs. It will be necessary to levy a fee for parts of the music curriculum that are additional to normal school music activities. Parents will be advised of this at the time students are accepted into the Programme. At this stage the fee is envisaged to be $315 per year. Financial assistance is available to students experiencing financial difficulty. ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAMME Auditions for Year 9, 2014 will be held during the first week of June. Time to be advised after application received. Late applications may be accepted up until Friday 2 August for Year 9 students. All out-of-zone applications must be completed by Friday 9 August for Years students. For 2014 students may be admitted to the Programme at Burnside High School at all year levels. Because the Programme is designed specifically for students of superior musical ability, each applicant will be auditioned. As well as a performance audition on the chosen solo instrument(s), the applicant should also expect to be tested on aspects of general musicianship. Attitude, sense of commitment to practising and developing musical potential to its maximum, together with previous instrumental experience will be taken into account in determining applicants suitability for admission to the programme. It is not possible to prescribe a grade that students should have reached in their performance on an instrument as there are so many factors to be taken into account. Members of the audition panel are highly experienced in recognising those who can best benefit from admission to the Programme. There are 3 Specialist Music Programme Scholarships offered to the best students auditioning for the programme at Year 9 level each year.

5 AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIALIST MUSIC PROGRAMME You will be auditioned by two people from a panel representing Canterbury University and Burnside High School. Please prepare up to five minutes playing time on your first instrument. You are welcome to demonstrate a second instrument if you wish. Aural Tests 1. You will be asked to clap back the rhythm of a phrase not exceeding 4 bars. 2. You will be asked to sing back the melody of a phrase not exceeding 4 bars. Sight Reading You will be asked to sight read a short piece of music on your first instrument. The level of difficulty will be within your performance capability. Your audition will be videotaped for staff reference only. Please ensure that your private music teacher is aware of these requirements. Best wishes for your audition.

6 BURNSIDE HIGH SCHOOL SPECIALIST MUSIC PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS SET FOR SPECIALIST MUSIC PROGRAMME STUDENTS 1. Students admission to the programme is for the whole of the current school year. 2. Students in the Programme are required to pay specialist music fees in addition to normal school fees. This is envisaged to be $315 per year. 3. Students in the Programme are required to continue learning their main instrument at their own expense and from a teacher approved by the Board of Studies. (Please speak to HOD Music, Burnside High School, if you require advice on this). 4. Students must play a full part in the various musical activities of the Programme and School Music Department, both within school time and outside school hours in co-curricular activities. SMP students are expected to be a member of one large ensemble, such as Orchestra, Big Band, Bel Canto, Malestrom or Aurora Voices. Chamber Music becomes a compulsory part of the SMP from Year 10 for instrumentalists. 5. Students are expected to keep up to date with their class school work and associated homework - in all subjects. 6. Students admitted to the Programme must follow it through at least to Year 12, but advancement in successive years is dependent upon on-going satisfactory progress.
