3 Background: Recent Economic Growth In 2010: China surpassed Japan to become the second largest economy in the world after the United States In 2013: China became the largest merchandise trader, surpassing the United States by $250 billion, and contributing over 30% to total global trade Growth has slowed in recent years, but still strong: 2014 marks the 3 rd consecutive year in which China has set an economic growth target of 7.5%. Growth in 2013 was 7.7%. Recent anticorruption campaign has negatively impacted the food service and luxury product sectors, however consumption of imported fruits is still strong
4 Background: Agricultural Policy Since the early 1960s, food security has been a top priority in agricultural policy, initially characterized by Centralized administration of agriculture Production quotas Reforms introduced in late 1970s early 1980s introduced Greater private control of land Market incentives for agricultural production A vibrant domestic trade 1980 to 2012: Vegetable production grew at an average annual rate of 7.9 percent, increasing more than 10-fold from 53.2 to million tons Fruit production grew at an average annual rate of 10.1 percent, increasing more than 20-fold from 6.8 to million tons Source: FAOSTAT
