1 CREATIVE CURRICULUM - ACTIVE LEARNING - INCLUSION - RAISE ACHIEVEMENT - LITERACY SKILLS Silent Film workshops
2 HELLO! We are Film in Education Workshops. We make a wide range of films for the education and corporate sectors, charities, for schools and with young people through workshops and film making courses. The aim of our workshops is to encourage active learning specific to the curriculum through the mediums of film, performance and creative writing. Our silent films are some of our most exciting projects, designed to give the busy teacher everything they need to deliver creative and inspiring lessons, without the need to spend hours on planning. We work closely with schools to create films that will inspire and engage children of all ages and give them the opportunity to learn about film making first hand, supported by industry professionals. The process is a fantastic evaluative opportunity, providing evidence of the students learning. The films are a great educational resource, and can be used by teachers for years to come as a class introduction to the topic covered. Children will explore filmmaking as an approach to storytelling, communication and documentation. They are encouraged to use memory, observation and imagination to express their ideas, knowledge, thoughts and feelings; giving them a real sense of achievement and self worth. We carefully use our expertise to adapt to various abilities and ages in every workshop. Each workshop contributes to the following: Raising achievement and attainment An inclusive environment Active learning Creative thinking Course Evaluation SEN achievements Reflective learning Attendance Confidence Above all we create high quality films which can be used as a learning aid, and provide a positive environment for learning in which pupils are interested and engaged.
3 HOW DOES IT WORK? This project works with any school class, in any sized school, as we creatively use and adapt their specific facilities and environment in order to tell their desired story. A typical workshop lasts two days, but can be personalised to the project s specific needs. Day one involves an introduction to the Silent Film genre, through analysing filming and acting techniques, looking at examples of Silent Film and understanding how it differs from films today. Lively discussion is encouraged, usually around a curriculum based topic and a concept of the film is decided upon by the class. The children create shot lists, scripts and storyboards and begin to see their project come to life through drama and role play. They also consider costume, props and set. Day two usually takes place a week later and there is always lots of excitement in the air. Guided every step of the way by the Film in Education team, the children are encouraged to take ownership of the project, both in front of and behind the camera. They set up shots, direct actors, consider continuity, any special effects and act! At the end of the academic year, each participating class is invited to the London Primary School Silent Film Festival, which has been held at the prestigious Theatre Royal, Stratford East for the past two years. It s a fantastic opportunity for the children to visit such an impressive, historical building and to see their films on a big screen. There is also an awards ceremony, which gives the children the opportunity to celebrate their own, and other children s achievements. The 2014 and 2015 Festival s will be held at The West End s Criterion Theatre! 2

7 PEOPLE SAY The Film in Education staff were excellent in leading on both days, organising and encouraging the children, and creating a fun and productive atmosphere. Clearly, as well as huge gains in terms of personal, social and emotional education the class also made more than expected progress with core literacy skills. The children all worked really hard and produced something amazing and I think they will treasure the experience for a very long time. Beckford Primary School NW6, Winners of the Silent Film Festival 2013 The workshops are a fantastic way to enrich students learning. Not only do the children learn about professional film making but they also creatively engage with the subject matter and with guidance from the FIE team, take ownership of the project. Primary Times 2013 This school is innovative in its approach to sharing outstanding practice and makes a variety of films for sharing amongst its own staff, other establishments and wider community. These are of exceptional quality and have also had a great impact on the achievements of pupils especially boys writing. Ofsted Inspection Report for Holy Trinity & St Silas Primary School NW1 We watched the film at the full governing body meeting last night fantastic!
