welcome First of all congratulations to everyone involved in the 35th Anniversary celebration at Colston Hall, which was a fantastic success judging by the number of people who attended and the many complimentary remarks made to me by guests. I was particularly struck by the joyful, relaxed atmosphere combined with an underlying awareness of why we were there. Sarah Smither s video was a touching testimony to that. I also know that the St Peter s Hospice choir was a great hit; anyone interested in joining it should know that Jane Lings is keeping it going. It meets at 5pm on the first and third Tuesday of the month in Brentry and anyone connected with St Peter s Hospice in any way is welcome to join I can personally vouch for the fact that it is fun and lifts the spirits. You will see later in the newsletter a piece about legacies. This is a very important income for us, and we are lucky to have benefited from numerous generous bequests over the past 35 years which have allowed us to deliver a huge amount of care to our patients. More recently we have seen a significant decline in our legacy income, so we are focusing some attention on it. It is my belief that many people would be keen to leave St Peter s Hospice a Gift in their Will if they realised how much this source of income has done for the Hospice in the past; we should not be too coy in asking for this support while always of course remaining sensitive to what can be a delicate subject. Looking ahead there is of course plenty going on. The Party for Pete season is on and we are hoping to exceed last year s great response to this new fundraiser so please help out with one if you can or organise your own! l Simon enjoying our Colston Hall event in June How we are funded We are a local charity and all of our care is provided free of charge, but it costs us around 18,000 a day to provide that care. 4 legacies Leave a Gift in your Will today make a difference tomorrow No-one should have to face a lifelimiting illness on their own. But leaving a Gift in your Will ensures that our specialist care for patients, their families, children and carers will run long into the future. l l In a typical year, the care and support for 1 in 5 of our patients is paid for by gifts that people leave us in their Wills. Whether you leave us a percentage of your estate, or a cash sum, every gift means so much. Please think of us when you make or update your Will. Our promises to you We understand that the decision to leave us a Gift in your Will is not one you ll take lightly. So, in return for your special gift to us: l We will use your gift to provide the best possible care for our patients and their families; l If you need any guidance on how to make or update your Will, we can help; l We can also help if you d like more information about whether Inheritance Tax affects you; l You don t have to tell us your decision we respect your privacy; l If you would like to come and visit the Hospice and see what we do, just let us know; l And finally, you can decide whether or not to receive regular updates about the Hospice.» For more information or advice, please call Jo Gibbons on , or [email protected] Thank you. l 4 Please leave a Gift in your Will today, to make a difference tomorrow

FOCUS ON Jenny Lloyd: Day Services Nurse The highlight of my day is when I hear lots of laughter, and then I know we ve had a great day, where we ve enabled our patients to live for the day, says Jenny Lloyd, Staff Nurse in a small team of nurses that run our Day Services, and what a privilege that is! she adds. Jenny is sure to have heard lots of laughter, as she s been working in the Day Hospice for over 14 years. With another 25 plus years of nursing experience before this, she really knows what she s talking about and she s still as passionate about it now as she was back then. Jenny Lloyd (left) with patients in Day Service Patients are often very anxious when they first start Day Services, as often it is the first time they have come into the Hospice building. Whilst they all have a life-limiting illness and share their experiences, it s very much about living here. We run a rolling 12 week course where patients come in on the same day every week, meeting up with others in similar circumstances. Even though they are all dealing with their own problems, the social side of the Day Service is very therapeutic. Sharing experiences and concerns with others in the same boat is really supportive. 6 shop news And the awards go to Charity Retail Association Awards 2013 St Peter s Hospice Shops came away with a hat-trick of awards at the Charity Retail Association Awards, held earlier this year in July. The dedication and hard work put in by our shops staff and volunteers paid off handsomely this year, and Janet Loud, Head of Shops, was so proud to be on hand to receive three awards on their behalf. Winner: Most Profitable Charity Shop ( shops) In this category, not only were we up against other hospice shops, but against all national charities who have up to 100 shops. This is a testament to how engaged and professional our whole retail team is, working together to raise as much as they can from the generous donations given to them. Janet Loud (center) with David Cryer, Chair of the Charity Retail Association, and comedian and compere Stu Goldsmith Winner: Shop Team of the Year Westbury On Trym We nominated our Westbury on Trym (WOT) shop team for this award and were thrilled that the panel of judges recognised and awarded such amazing teamwork. Under the leadership of Mandi Gibbs, the WOT team constantly show how innovative they are. Mandi is a superb manager of her team of 30 staff and volunteers she is motivational and great fun to work with, ensuring everyone operates as a complete team. During the financial year 2012/13 the team increased profit by 32% on the previous year. (The team has increased the profits every year for the past 9 years, this year achieving a net profit of 57,619 towards patient care). Mandi s passion and understanding for charity retail is contagious and she has transformed her shop into the centre of the local community. Winner: Most Valuable Donated Item Clevedon Hill Road & the Japanese Brushpot Our final award for the most valuable donated item goes to prove how important our Bric-a-Brac training is. The Clevedon Hill Road team did an excellent job in identifying the pot as an interesting item to go to auction, where it exceeded all expectations, raising an amazing amount for patient care. 7 CLEARANCE SHOP a big hit with customers On 3 June, our new clearance shop at Broadwalk opened its doors. The shop sells items that have previously not sold in other shops, with thousands of items inside for less than 5. Their first week of trading was a great success, raising over 5,000 which was 141% up on target! An incredible 2,870 items went through the till on their first week, and Les and Jayne and the team are working incredibly hard to keep up this high level of success. So, pop along to our Broadwalk shop and see what bargains you can find: 329 Wells Road, Knowle. l Young volunteer s dedication is outstanding Ellen Fielder, aged 18, started volunteering with us at our Cotham shop in 2009, as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award. She has a wonderful attitude, helping with everything from steaming clothes, cleaning on the shop floor and researching interesting items to either be sold in the shop, or sent on to our ebay shop. Her young life has not been without its challenges and she had to take time out of school and volunteering for a heart operation. But once recovered, she immediately came back to the shop and continues to arrive every week with a smile on her face. She delivers a very high standard of customer service and has a really mature» For more information about Gifts in Wills, call Jo Gibbons on attitude towards every job she does. She directly contributes to the amount of money the shop raises and to the positive atmosphere in the shop. The shop staff say she is great fun to work with, great fun to be around and are thrilled she is a part of their team. They feel very lucky she chose to volunteer with them, so thank you Ellen, for your dedication to St Peter s Hospice! Ellen s outstanding contribution led to her being nominated for Young Volunteer of the Year at this year s Charity Retail Association Awards. If you d like to join our shop team of volunteers, please pop in to your local shop and talk to the Manager. l 7

patient story Celebrating the life of Sarah For George Ray, who was just 17 when his mum Sarah died of cervical cancer, being able to celebrate her life has been an important part of his grieving over the last 5 years. Sarah, a well known local singer, was just 39 when she died. She spent her last few weeks in the Hospice, where her mum Jenny and her two young children George and Lili could be by her side. Since her death George has developed his own musical talents and has written and sung songs as a way of keeping her memory alive. Along with his nan, Jenny, they have both got involved with the Light up a Life services held every December, which mean a lot to them both. The Light up a Life services bring people together, people who are all wanting to remember loved ones. It s a really powerful thing. Being able to celebrate my Mum s life is really important to us, says George, who will be singing the song he wrote for his Mum, Time goes far too quickly, with the St Peter s Hospice choir at this year s Light up a Life services. George and his Nan Jenny with one of our Books of Remembrance» I m so proud of George and his singing, says Jenny. It s helping me come to terms with losing Sarah. Sarah Ivin Her love of music started at a really early age. She d be out in the garden on her swing, singing her heart out. Sarah s family and friends are all keeping her memory alive with lots of fundraising, and George also wants to ensure that something positive comes out of losing his Mum. For him, it s writing and recording his song Time goes far too quickly and being able to sell the CD to raise money for St Peter s Hospice in his Mum s memory. George s CD will be available to buy at our Light up a Life services (see Events Calendar for details), at our Brentry reception and through our website. I hope you will come and join me and my Nan at one of the Light up a Life services this year, to celebrate the lives of those we ve lost. You don t have to have lost someone at the Hospice, everyone is welcome to come along and join us this Christmas. l 8 Please leave a Gift in your Will today, to make a difference tomorrow

Living life at St Peter s Hospice As we ve already heard from Jenny Lloyd, Staff Nurse in our Day Hospice, one of our jobs is to enable patients to live as fully as they can, for as long as they can. Feedback from patients, family members and carers is testament to how much living our patients do. hospice life Celebration event at Colston Hall Our 35th Anniversary Celebration event held in June at Colston Hall was a resounding success and greatly enjoyed by all who came along. The afternoon was full of excellent music and singing, followed by laughter and nibbles. Many thanks to everyone that came to celebrate with us. We decided we should celebrate this aspect of our caring and have dedicated an area outside the Day Hospice at Brentry to showcase life and living through our work as a whole hospice. If you have any photos that you would like to share, about your time, or a loved ones time with us, we d really like to hear from you. 12 local business support Sainsbury s support is spectacular! We were thrilled to receive a cheque for 4,741 from Sainsbury s East Filton after they had a busy year fundraising for us. Over the course of the year they threw themselves into fundraising for us, taking part in a huge number of events; they abseiled, sky-dived, held charity quizzes, ran miles, baked cakes and held good old fashioned in-store collections. As well as this they visited the Hospice on several occasions at Christmas a team sang carols in our Day Hospice and during Carer s Week another team served up Cream Teas (that had also kindly been donated by Sainsbury s!). Angela from Sainsbury s said, We ve enjoyed the last year; St Peter's Hospice is such a local charity it s great to know the money will go to local people when they need it most. We would like to also thank our customers for helping us to raise the money. l Another brick in the wall On a really hot June day, Miller Construction arrived at the Hospice with three bricklayers and a load of cement and spent the day rebuilding the boundary wall, a job that has needed to be done for quite some time but costs have prevented us. 12» Please Anna Ross, Corporate Fundraiser agreed to help out on the day along with other volunteers: "I never knew that manual labour was so tough I was aching all over the next day but it was amazing that they donated their time and materials for free thank you Miller!" l leave a Gift in your Will today, to make a difference tomorrow

Sift teamwork gets results We were thrilled to have over 80 runners raising funds for us in the Bristol 10k in May with over 20 of these runners coming from locally based digital media company Sift. Coming together to run on this sunny Sunday morning the team from Sift were able to raise almost 2,000 for us which is fantastic! The team were of mixed running abilities and experience but Paul Morris, Head of Sales, told us it was all about the coming together and taking part as a team. Raising funds for a local charity close to their hearts also spurred them all on! Thank you Team Sift!» For St Peter s Hospice Do you work for or own a locally based office or business? If so we would love to hear from you! Since it launched in 2012 the St Peter s Hospice 100 Club has been growing in strength and we are now looking for more members to help us reach our target of 100 companies! The concept is simple: 100 businesses x 1,000 each = 100,000 raised This amount will enable us to make a significant impact on the lives of our patients and their families. It s all about being part of a collective. We realise that some companies will smash the 1,000 target and raise even more, whereas others may bring in less but it s all about the overall amount! CLUB more information about Gifts in Wills, call Jo Gibbons on There are a number of ways that you can raise the money we would be happy to talk through some ideas with you. We would include your logo on our website and you could use our 100 Club logo on your marketing material to promote your support. 18 fundraising groups news In the limelight Christmas Bazaar If you have never been to St Peter s Hospice Christmas Bazaar, you have missed a treat. For the past 30 years or so a group of Hospice volunteers have created an event that benefits the Hospice directly. It s an opportunity to join the Lord Mayor and the Town Crier to do your Christmas shopping early. There are stalls selling Christmas decorations, jewellery, crafts and fabrics, wine, cheese and preserves, cakes, plus knitwear, bric-a-brac and more. There is an area set aside for refreshments where you can enjoy a rest with a cup of tea during what we hope will be an enjoyable day. Two of our volunteers should have special mention. Peter Galton has run the raffle for over 30 years, involved right from the start. He and his family and friends surprise us each year with the variety and quality of the prizes available and they all work so hard to run this stall so well. Secondly, June Hall, who together with the Tuesday Sewing Group and a number of Bristol Quilters make many items to sell, including this magnificent patchwork quilt (pictured) which is raffled throughout the year and will be presented at the Christmas Bazaar. The new Mayor of Thornbury Pam Shipp, who is a very valued member of our support group, also came. The tea was superb and we were fortunate to have Mr Mike Horton from Gems of Thornbury to talk to us, who was very informative with his answers to questions from the floor. Yate & Sodbury Fundraising Group We held our Bangers & Mash Evening on Saturday 16 March in the Masonic Lodge in Chipping Sodbury. After the meal we were entertained by Frampton Male Voice Choir who gave their services for free and a very enjoyable evening was had by all. 20 lotto update Help patients to continue living We heard earlier from Jenny Lloyd (one of our Day Hospice nurses), about how we want to help our patients to live as well as they can for as long as they can. By supporting the Local Lotto you d be helping us to do this every day If just three people signed up to the Local Lotto for one year, one more patient would be able to attend our 12 week course, giving them the support and tools they need to live as independently as possible. For just 1 a week, you could be making such a difference. So please join our Local Lotto online at or by calling Scott on l Winners stories Mervyn Lawrence from Stoke Gifford won our 1,000 first prize back in June 2012 and the money very much came in handy to treat his 6 month old son Charlie! Mervyn used around 500 of the prize money to decorate Charlie s nursery (right), complete with new cot and chest of drawers, and also to purchase some new toys! With recent news that Mervyn s wife Beccy is due to give birth to their second son this October, the remaining half of the money can be used to do the same for their new arrival! Simon Birch s Local Lotto win came at an ideal time as he was off on holiday the very next day! Simon, from Redland, was presented with his 1,000 winning cheque on the day before he and his wife flew off for a break in Sicily, affording them some extra leeway in terms of holiday spending! However, Simon told us that the lion s share of the prize money would serve as an extra contribution towards his daughter s wedding (below).
