welcome Our 35th Anniversary year was a great success, and nowhere more so than in the media where we have enjoyed significant exposure and fantastic support from many different outlets including the BBC, ITV and the Bristol Post. We will now be working hard to capitalise on this, as it is a vital part of communicating what we do to all parts of the community and thus improving our accessibility. As I write this, the ground is being prepared for the new garden room at Brentry, an exciting development funded by a grant from the Department of Health. This project serves as a physical symbol of the progress we are making. It is principally designed to benefit the numerous patients, carers and families who use the therapeutic services of the Psycho Social Spiritual (PSS) Team. This new building will provide a much better environment for the PSS team to work in and will in turn free up space elsewhere. Thus overall it will enable us to increase access to our services. But I hope it will also be used much more widely, and possibly allow us to engage more with other community groups. The building itself is being created by local tradesmen, craftsmen and professionals. Of note is Westwind Oak who crafted the timber frame; they overcame scheduling difficulties to ensure they made the frame in their local workshops because they wanted to forge the local link with what they see as an important project. It transpired when I went to see them that one of their craftsmen had been visiting a relative in St Peter s only days before, indicative of the extent to which St Peter s touches so many people. So this is a building built by the community for the community. l How we are funded We are a local charity and all of our care is provided free of charge, but it costs us around 18,000 a day to provide that care. 3 Saturday 12 July Join Bristol s best girl s night out and support St Peter s Hospice with our fun women-only sponsored walk. Take part in either the 5 or 10 mile route. Both start at 10.30pm and take in many of Bristol s famous landmarks including the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Downs, Bristol Zoo and the SS Great Britain. Registration costs 18 or just 15 if you book by 30 April. To register visit or call Last year, Gemma Rosenthal and her team, Horts Hunnies, took part in the Midnight Walk. As well as their fab pink t-shirts they wore moustaches and blue hairnets in memory of their Dad, Tony Horton, who was well known for his black moustache and wore a hairnet everyday at work. We did the Midnight Walk to show our thanks to all who work at St Peter s Hospice. The job they do is fantastic! The care Dad received in the Inpatient Unit was second to none. So go on girls Dig out your hats, pink wigs or even moustaches and show your support for St Peter s Hospice! l» Gifts in Wills, donations, fundraising and our shops. 3

legacies Leave a Gift in your Will today make a difference tomorrow We rely so much on the fantastic generosity of people leaving us gifts in their Wills. Each year, we receive nearly a quarter of all of our income in this way. It s a great way to support the Hospice in the future especially if you are unable to make a donation now. Of course, we want everyone to look after family and loved ones first but it may be possible to consider a gift to the Hospice, too. Many people don t realise that the majority of their estate (their worth) can be left to their family with a small minority left to the Hospice. For example, you could leave 99% to your family and 1% to the Hospice. Over the past year or so, we have received wonderful gifts left to us in Wills. Many are for set amounts of 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 whilst some are a percentage of the estate 15% or 25% and sometimes even 100%. One gentleman left us his miniature train collection which has been auctioned and raised 20,000 for the Hospice. Another supporter left us her car along with a cash sum and one lady kindly left us her house and all the contents. Through these and other generous gifts, we will raise more than 1.5 million this year enough to run the whole Hospice for nearly three months. If you would like to talk to someone about leaving a gift to the Hospice in your Will please phone Jo Gibbons l We have received a variety of Gifts in Wills including a miniature train set. 4» St Peter s Hospice For Patients, Families and Bristol. stpetershospice.org

FOCUS ON Dave Smith, Spiritual Care Coordinator It s an honour to be part of people s lives at such a crucial time, says Dave Smith, Spiritual Care Coordinator. End of life is often a time to explore faith issues. It can be daunting and confusing so I see my role as helping people through this. With a background in social work, Dave joined the Hospice last year in the newly created role which is part of the Hospice s Psycho Social Spiritual team. He is licensed as a lay minister in the Church of England although he sees the role of Spiritual Care Coordinator as broadening out the spiritual work of the Hospice to develop a more multi-faith approach. It is a varied role that can involve saying morning prayers with patients in the Day Hospice, sitting with patients or families in Inpatient Unit or saying prayers for the dying. Dave may be asked to conduct occasional funerals and he helped lead our Light Up a Life services at Christmas. You meet every variation in people s response to faith. Some people run to faith, seeking comfort in it, whilst others run away. Spiritual care is for both extremes and everything in between. Dave is keen to take a human, compassionate and practical approach to his work. Many patients and families I meet simply need comfort, time and space. I m definitely not here to evangelise; instead, I try to sense where people are on their spiritual journey and meet them there. Dave leading the Light Up a Life service at the Hospice in December. As well as providing support for patients and their loved ones, Dave also offers a listening ear to Hospice staff. There is a lot of laughter at the Hospice, but it s also a place where people feel at ease about talking on a deeper level. I ve had many meaningful conversations that have lasted only a few minutes, he says. Looking to the future, Dave would like to build better links with other faith groups and to increase the number of volunteers involved in spiritual care. He would also like to develop the use of the Sanctuary at Brentry as a sacred and reflective space. I hope and pray that the spiritual life of the Hospice will grow and for it never to lose its human touch. l» St Peter s Hospice For Patients, Families and Bristol. stpetershospice.org 5

shop news Alex Lovell and the Pill shop team. Our 47th shop opens its doors We were delighted to open a brand new shop in Pill in October. Crowds of people braved wet and windy weather to see BBC Points West presenter, Alex Lovell, cut the ribbon to officially open our 47th shop on Monday 21 October. Alex stayed on afterwards to chat to local people and staff, and to check out some of the fabulous items on sale. The shop in Pill serves the North Somerset villages of Lodway, Ham Green, Easton-in-Gordano and Portbury and is run by Shop Manager, Becky, Assistant Manager, Emma, and a great new team of volunteers. They have been heartened by the great response they ve had from the local community. We re in a row of shops in the centre of Pill and people pop in regularly to check out our latest range of fashions, accessories and gifts, said Becky. Our dedicated Kids area, with toys, books and clothing, is proving particularly popular with young families. 6 Book month To celebrate World Book Day on 6 March, our shops will be holding a Book Promotion month in March. We ll have some great special offers and discounts on a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books in all our stores throughout the month. Why not pop in and have a browse?» It costs 18,000 a day to run the Hospice. For most of this money we rely on

Gift Aid is a fantastic and easy way to make your donations go further. For every 1 raised from gifts donated we can raise an extra 25p at no cost to you. If you are a UK taxpayer, all you need to do is sign up in one of our shops then let us know when you pop in with donated goods. As we go to print, the total Gift Aid generated through shops sales this financial year to date is a fantastic 312,000 which is 10,000 more than this time last year. Based on this we re expecting the total at the end of the financial year to reach between 440,000 and 450,000 that s enough to cover around nine months of Hospice at Home care. Gift Aid helps support our Hospice at Home service.» Gifts in Wills, donations, fundraising and our shops. Help us create our Spring/Summer fashion collection Giving your wardrobe a Spring Clean? Planning to buy some new summer clothes? Then please remember to donate your old clothes to St Peter s Hospice. We need good quality items of clothing, particularly spring and summer fashion. Bring your donations to one of our shops or pop them in one of our clothing banks. If you have five large bags or more and you re unable to take them to your nearest shop, we can collect from your home see or call for details. 7

patient story Bob Danaher makes a tribute to his wife Maggie My wife Maggie was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in late 2011, after we d returned from a cruise to Israel. It was such a terrible shock for us both. Maggie was such a fun person, full of life; she was always organising nights out for her friends, and had a keen eye for interior design and a love of travel. Maggie Danaher. As well as starting a course of chemotherapy at Southmead, we started having visits from one of the St Peter s Hospice Community Nurse Specialists. She was wonderful and really helped us to deal with and understand the situation. Maggie attended a 12-week course at the Day Hospice in April 2012 to help her manage the symptoms of her illness. True to form, one day she decided to liven things up by organising a conga around the Hospice reception! Over the next year, Maggie s health deteriorated and she went into the Inpatient Unit in March Despite our expectations, the environment at the Hospice gave us both a lift and Maggie felt very at home there. Our beloved dog, Seren, was allowed to visit and sit in Maggie s lap as she went around the Hospice in her wheelchair. Maggie died peacefully at the Hospice on 14 April The care she had received was tremendous and the nurses seemed to have so much time for her. I really wanted to give something back so I got in touch with the Fundraising Team at the Hospice who suggested that I set up a Tribute Fund in Maggie s name. Every time one of her friends or family does any fundraising, we tell St Peter s Hospice that it s in memory of Maggie and the money raised goes into her fund. So far, we ve raised 5,400 through all sorts of activities and people are very forthcoming when we mention St Peter s Hospice. For example, two friends raised almost 600 by doing The Midnight Walk last year, Maggie s hairdresser is donating all her tips and I ve raised money through table top sales and my football refereeing. Her friends are planning to do The Midnight Walk again this year and I ve decided to help marshal the event. It would be fantastic to reach 6,000 or more for such a great cause but we ll just see how it goes. We all miss Maggie so much but the Tribute Fund has given us a focus and is a great way to keep Maggie s memory alive. l Tribute Funds are a positive and simple way for family, friends and colleagues to remember a loved one by raising money for St Peter s Hospice in their name. You can now set up a Tribute Fund online in four simple steps at 8» St Peter s Hospice For Patients, Families and Bristol. stpetershospice.org

hospice life New Garden Room takes shape In 2013, we welcomed many visitors who came to find out more about the work we do including some famous faces Visitors to the Hospice in the last few months will have seen exciting developments taking place with the construction of the new oak-framed Garden Room. Clockwise: Mayor George Ferguson, BBC Points West presenter Alex Lovell, Actress Fiona Wade (with Head of Supporter Relations, John Flanagan), and Actor Anthony Head and his wife Sarah Fisher. Situated in the Hospice gardens, the building has been made by South West company, Westwind Oak, using 16-tonnes of handcrafted oak, 150 oak beams and 500 oak pegs. In December, Knitivity not only became our best-selling Christmas card ever but it also hit the big time with appearances on BBC s The One Show, and in Hello magazine, The Sun and The Daily Mail. The life-sized knitted nativity scene was created by the Knutty Knitters in memory of their friend Christine Walsh, who died at the Hospice in December When it has been completed in March, the Garden Room will be home to the Psycho Social Spiritual team and will provide a relaxing space for patients to enjoy. l» St Peter s Hospice For Patients, Families and Bristol. stpetershospice.org 9

We have been thrilled with the diverse and innovative ways that 100 Club members have sought to raise funds for us. Many have focused their fundraising on their business expertise here are a few examples: l Arch House Deli in Clifton is holding Cheese and Wine Evenings with 10 of the ticket price being donated to St Peter s Hospice. (Bookings can be for groups of people, please mention St Peter s Hospice at the time of booking). l Try4 Fun, an adventure and corporate activity company based in Portishead, is running sponsored cliff abseiling to help raise funds for the Hospice (St Peter s Hospice must be mentioned when booking). l Cossey Produce is donating 1 for every fruit and vegetable box ordered using the SPH code (please contact us for more details). l Four teams from ITEC took part in the September 2013 Dragon Boat Race and raised over 8,000. We re still working hard to reach our target of 100 members so if you work for or own a local business, please do get in touch we d love to discuss ways of working together. We also hope to run some networking events in the future so that members can meet each other.» contact Caroline on or Edd on Big Yellow Storage We re very grateful to Big Yellow Storage which has donated a 200 square foot storage space at their Winterstoke Road site. One of the main reasons for moving our fundraising office last summer was to save money but this means that our new site is very tight on space. The storage space at Big Yellow is fantastic because we can use it to store the fundraising materials that we only need at certain times of the year. It has also provided a new home for our much loved Lenny the Hospice Bear. Lee Smith, Manager of Big Yellow says, We re always happy to try and support a local cause and we know how much St Peter s Hospice means to the people of Bristol. We hope that we can save them money so that more funds go directly to patient care. 15
