welcome Our 35th Anniversary year is already proving to be important and significant for St Peter s Hospice. Our trustees have recently signed off the Five Year Strategic Plan and of course we have recently heard the fantastic news about our Department of Health grant to make some much needed improvements to our Brentry site. We have exciting plans for the development of St Peter s Hospice which are firmly rooted in delivering the best we can to the community we serve. We do intend to make some limited improvements to the Hospice at Brentry, and of course the new garden building will be a great contribution to this, especially to the valuable work done by the Psycho/ Social/Spiritual Team. But we also will be expanding the services we provide out in the community; to answer what we know will be a growing need. In the first instance this will be by increasing the Hospice at Home service, but we have ambitions beyond that, not least by expanding the use of volunteers. Meanwhile our retail and fundraising departments continue to do a great job to attract the income we need to support these activities. The future of our NHS Simon Caraffi Chief Executive, pictured at our 35th Anniversary Launch funding cannot be guaranteed and thus our charitable income assumes even greater importance. A big thank you, therefore to all of you who support St Peter s Hospice in so many different ways please keep up the good work. l Department Of Health Grant Success We re delighted that our bid for part of a 60 million Department of Health grant has been successful. We were awarded 460,000, nearly 65% of our bid, which is enough money to build a brand new garden room in the grounds at Brentry, which will be used for group therapy and to support individual patients and family members. The Psychological Social and Spiritual (PSS) care team will be able to deliver services to patients, their families and carers through discussion, education, group support and sharing skills for coping. With this new facility, we will be able to reach more people earlier in their journey before they need more St Peter s Hospice, Charlton Road, Brentry, Bristol, BS10 6NL clinical support and also act as a stepping stone for Telephone: patients, families and carers who will be in contact with [email protected] Website: the Hospice.» 2 Join our 35th Anniversary Celebration on 9 June at the Colston Hall

FOCUS ON Rebecca O Donnell: Hospice at Home Team Leader Knowing you ve helped provide the best for the patient at the end of their life and in their death is very rewarding. says Rebecca, a Registered Nurse who manages the team of Hospice at Home nurses and Healthcare Assistants. Patients want to be looked after at home in their own environment, with their own routines, where they have more control and are therefore more relaxed. Our Hospice at Home service enables this to happen, but there are many more patients and carers needing our support and help than we can currently give, which is why one of our goals over the next five years is to expand this service. Patients want to die at home, but they want to die safely at home and our Hospice at Home service allows that. Patients get the same level of professional care as they would in the Hospice Inpatient Unit so really our service is like the Hospice at Brentry, but without the walls. Rebecca s role is to co-ordinate the day to day running of the busy Hospice at Home service. Each morning she reviews each individual patient and then decides on the best care package, or what the next steps are, for that patient and their carer. She then allocates the nurses as appropriate. The care they offer could be: l 24 hour end of life care for up to a week; l Respite care so carers can take some time for themselves; l Help at home before a bed becomes available on our Inpatient Unit;» Join 4 l Help at home once a patient has been discharged from hospital or our Inpatient Unit. Although our primary focus is on giving the patient what they need, you can t underestimate the importance of the support we give the carer, who needs time to look after themselves. The respite care means they can sleep, go to their own GP to discuss problems, or just go out and have their hair done. Being able to provide this respite is just one piece of the whole care package and is so important. It would be great to be able to offer more of this as the service grows. Sometimes the situations the nurses find themselves in can be unexpected, but not always in a sad way, as Rebecca explains: One time, a few years ago, I was at the patient s house and lots of family members and friends turned up to celebrate the patient s life. Everyone was relaxed and laughing and playing games, and as I d been asked to stay, I found myself sitting in the middle of it, keeping an eye on the patient, enjoying the party atmosphere. It was very uplifting. l our 35th Anniversary Celebration on 9 June at the Colston Hall
35th Anniversary Join us for our 35th Anniversary celebration! You are invited to join our celebrations on Sunday 9 June at Colston Hall. To book your place, visit [email protected] or call We say St Peter s greatest asset is its people St Peter s Hospice is without doubt one of Bristol s best loved and most cherished charities. In fact it is hard to imagine our city without it. And yet just over 35 years ago it was only an idea in the mind of its founder Joan Bourns. But she established an organisation that Bristolians immediately understood and took to their hearts. And few if any in this city have not known someone who has been helped by St Peter s. Today after some difficult years when the charity seemed to lose some of its favour with local people, it is again on firm ground. We say Support from The Post Throughout the charity s 35th anniversary year The Post will be featuring 35 people who have been involved with St Peter s in that time. To view all the stories that have been written so far, please visit: Under the leadership of Simon Caraffi this charity is in safe hands. For he know its history, realises its importance to Bristolians and wants not only to protect it but to nurture it and see it grow. Its value is not simply in helping people whose lives are coming to an end but in supporting those who have been left behind. And in both areas, St Peter s is supremely good. An organisation, however well intentioned, is only as good as the people who run it. In the case of St Peter s, its staff and volunteers are undoubtedly its greatest asset. It has had a remarkable first 35 years and there will be many, many more to come. 35th Anniversary Launch On 25 January 2013, nurses from the past and present were among supporters of St Peter s Hospice who gathered at the Hospice to celebrate the start of our 35th Anniversary Year. Pictured left to right are former nurses Carole Jenkins, Eileen Davies, Olive Martel and current nurses Jan Little, Rebecca O Donnell and Chris Benson.» Call for tickets or register online at 5

patient story Cheralyn Heather talks about her wonderful Dad, Colin Ladd Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September It came from out of the blue, as he had very few symptoms so it was a huge shock. He was due to retire the following spring, his 60th birthday. The timing couldn't have been crueller he had worked so hard for so long and he and Mum had great plans for their retirement together. His cancer was aggressive and it spread, so he started chemotherapy, followed by hormone treatment. From the first diagnosis Mum and Dad embraced life. They loved to travel and went on cruises and had weekends away when Dad felt well enough. My Dad still worked on an old car with his brother-in-law and entered off road competitions. As 2012 continued Dad was in more pain and went on to have radiotherapy. He was starting to get more tired and we knew the cancer was taking a much stronger hold. By December he was in so much discomfort, so he spent time in the Hospice to get his pain under control. He was desperate to come home to be with Mum, who was the love of his life, but his symptoms and responses were complicated, so stayed (on and off) until late January During this time my mother had some much needed respite and, as I live near Oxford, I could come down and relax there and spend quality time with him and Mum in a warm, friendly environment. The care my father and all of us received was truly phenomenal. The staff were» wonderful; not just in the way they cared for Dad medically, but also in the way they would chat to him about his motorbikes, his children and grandchildren and have a joke and a laugh with him. When Dad left the Hospice he had Hospice at Home care to ease Mum into having him home and then carers visited 4 times a day. Mum found this invaluable, giving her time to adjust and someone else to talk to and help her care. A few days later Dad passed away peacefully at home, with me, my brother and Mum by his side, the four of us together for one last time. Cheralyn (right) with her Dad Colin, her brother Robert and their Mum. To sum up our feelings, we could not have managed without the help of St Peter's Hospice. My father was a proud, lively, loving and wonderful man, who I miss every moment of every day. His disease destroyed him, but the care he received ensured that he lived his final weeks in a comfortable and dignified fashion. l 8 Join our 35th Anniversary Celebration on 9 June at the Colston Hall

local business support Rockpool Pledges Plenty! Rockpool is one of the UK's fastest growing digital agencies with teams based in both Bristol and London. Supporting a charity is a priority to them, helping create an enjoyable and productive environment in which to work. They ve now decided that each of their offices will commit time and fundraising resources to support just one charity over a number of years, building a strong relationship that will benefit both parties. Rockpool employees taking part in the Firewalk in March Annie Taylor says, Our Bristol office unanimously decided in favour of supporting St Peter s Hospice. Being a local charity, we felt that the results of our endeavours would be more tangible for our employees and also allow us to put faces to the names of the people who are part of this great organisation. We ve got a range of activities planned over the next year which we re really excited about. Two of our employees took part in the Firewalk back in March; we re prepped and ready to get our hands dirty helping out in the Hospice s garden; we ll get our money-making caps on in the Apprentice Challenge and tap into our inner Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood for our cake sale! 13 have your say Join our PLACE team! PLACE Teams (Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment) are a new government initiative that started in April This assessment is an equal collaboration between Hospice staff and patients, family and carers, focusing on: 1. Cleanliness; 2. Buildings and facilities condition, appearance and maintenance; 3. Privacy, dignity and well being; 4. Food and hydration. Chris Procter, Amy Gill and Lucy Joy from HSBC with their Donation Station Thank you HSBC We were thrilled when seventeen branches of HSBC recently agreed to place a Donation Station in their staff areas so that employees can donate their unwanted items. Amy Gill, Manager of HSBC Westbury on Trym says, It s such an easy way for us to support the Hospice on top of our other fundraising activities and it keeps it at the front of people s minds as the Donation Station is placed in our staff room for all to see. Janet Loud, Head of Shops is so grateful to these companies, as the volume and quality of stock received is so good. It makes a huge difference to our shops to have this stock coming in on such a regular basis. We couldn t raise the money we do without donations like these. We have over 70 Donation Stations currently placed in workplaces across our region, but we d like to increase this to 100 in our 35th Anniversary Year. If you can help, please call Sian Rees on or her on [email protected]. A big thank you to the many companies that have Donation Stations placed with them. All the stock taken from these goes straight to our chain of 46 shops across the region.» We are now looking for people to join our PLACE Team, who have experience of our services at Brentry and who can work with others to follow the assessment programme. The PLACE Team will walk around the Hospice and rate each area against set criteria. Results will be made public in September 2013 and will be used to measure our performance by the Care Quality Commission. Dates for the visits are announced six weeks in advance by the government. We will contact all interested assessors once these are known and a brief training session will be given ahead of the assessments. 18 fundraising groups news In the limelight Ann and Peter Harrowell In 1983, a dear friend of Ann s was in hospital with terminal cancer, and it brought home to her the importance of end of life care. Having heard of the Hospice, Ann started volunteering at Knowle. In 1987 she joined the newly formed Support Group in Nailsea, and Peter joined shortly after. They have both been huge supporters of this Group since then, Peter for many years as Treasurer, and both serving terms as Chairman. Severnside Fundraising Group 18 For 11 years Ann covered as a weekend receptionist at Knowle and, upon retirement in 1997 was involved with the training of new receptionists and she also had a short spell as a Day Hospice volunteer. Ann has also been a Speaker for the Hospice since Upon retirement Peter volunteered as a Day Hospice driver, and continues to do so at Brentry. He was also one of three volunteers who successfully ran St Peter s Hospice Enterprises Ltd for many years. Our sincere thanks go to Ann and Peter - it is wonderful to have such loyal and devoted supporters who have stuck with us for so many years. l» Join At the Christmas Tree Festival at Falfield our tree was decorated with novelties and we raised 75.
