4 2 Introduction 2.1 Overview The Technology Services (TS) Department has sole responsibility for Communications Infrastructure on and within all University of Adelaide owned and leased Properties. This document intends to describe the University of Adelaide IT&T infrastructure standards. It is to be read in conjunction with the University of Adelaide Building standards and all relevant Australian Standards. This document shall be seen as a supplement to the Australian Standards and shall prevail unless there is a conflict between this document and Australian Standards relating to binding mandatory requirements. This document shall be seen as a supplement to the TE Generic Category 6 or 6A if applicable specification (see Appendix) and shall prevail unless it causes the installation not being certifiable. 2.2 Mandatory Requirements TS shall be consulted for any works relating to new communications infrastructure works as well as any modification and/or addition of communications infrastructure. This may also include related works like restricting access to or relocation of IT&T infrastructure by other trades. It is imperative that TS is consulted early to allow for the identification of capacity and cost implications. It is the responsibility of the Consultant/Project Officer to contact TS and to ensure that relevant information is obtained. Non-compliance with these mandatory requirements may result in the refusal by TS to connect services. Page 4
5 3 Internal and External Cabling Plant 3.1 Structured Cabling System Copper Internal The University has selected TE 25 System as the preferred solutions provider for structured cabling systems. All installations shall comply with the TE Network design integrator system Structured Cabling System. TS shall be approached in the early design stages to validate the choice of the TE Copper Ten Cat6A cabling solution for the specific application Category 6 This Category 6 solution shall utilise the Highband Ultim8 Disconnection modules, Category 6-4 pair copper UTP cable and category 6 flush mount outlets. The cable colour shall be grey and the outlet colour shall be black. Wall plates shall be the window model type allowing for machine printed outlet identification. The installation shall utilise wall mount distribution frames Profil type only. All flyleads and system leads (leads between active equipment and termination frames) shall be white in colour. The installation shall be carried out by TE Network design integrator 25 and shall carry a 25-year Te25Enterprise Networks system warranty. Cable and TO numbering shall be the same and as per below; Levels with multiple communications rooms feeding the same level COMMS ROOM-NUMBER CC / CC Levels with a single communications room NUMBER 251 / Category 6 A TE Copper Ten 10 Gigabit solution is the preferred cabling solution for Greenfield sites. This Category 6A Solution shall utilise the TE Copper Ten 20 Pair Modules and backmount frames. The cable colour shall be grey and the outlet colour shall be black. Wall plates shall be the window model type allowing for machine printed outlet identification. This installation of the backmount frames shall utilise a false wall and the design needs to be approved by TS and TE before proceeding. All flyleads and systems leads (leads between active equipment and termination frames) shall be yellow in colour except when using TE weather proof outlet the cable shall be green in colour. Cable and TO numbering shall be the same and as per below; Levels with multiple communications rooms feeding the same level COMMS ROOM-NUMBER CC / CC Levels with a single communications room NUMBER 251 / a Category 6.a S/FTP (Av cabling) TE Copper Ten 10 Gigabit solution is the preferred cabling solution for Av Page 5
6 solutions This Category 6A Solution shall utilise the TE Copper. The cable colour shall be orange and the outlet colour shall be black with an orange faceplate. All flyleads shall be orange in colour Cable and TO numbering shall be the same and as per below; Levels with multiple communications rooms feeding the same level COMMS ROOM-NUMBER CC / CC Levels with a single communications room NUMBER 251 / Workstation Outlets The reticulation of cabling within the workstation and the Workstation outlets need to be approved by TE unless matching existing workstations Internal Voice Grade Cable Internal multi core voice grade copper cable shall be a PVC type. Conductor size shall be a minimum of 0.5mm square. Cable runs shall be contiguous between wall mounted distribution frames. Joints shall not be used. Cable termination shall be via TE disconnection modules. Colour coding shall comply with manufacturer recommended schemes Cable pathways Main pathways shall be within accessible ceiling spaces above public areas e.g. Passageways, not office or other occupied space. Accessible means that sufficient access to cable pathways is given to ensure that cables can be installed and secured to comply with both, Australian Standards and the TE Network design integrator 25. Cable pathways shall utilise cable tray along the main trunk and catenary wire for branches. Cable tray shall be of sufficient size for the anticipated quantity of cables to be supported plus 50% spare capacity for future growth. There shall be no more than 20 cables per catenary wire. Communications support infrastructure is for the sole use of communications cabling only hence no other services shall utilise communications infrastructure in any form. 3.2 Structured Cabling System Fibre - Internal The University has selected TE as the preferred solutions provider for internal Fibre Cabling Systems The preferred internal Structured Fibre Cabling System is custom design, TE 25 System solution based on Tyco RTC -Series fibre enclosures utilising TE Krone Optic Fibre including LC connectors with pigtails. Fibre cable shall be TE Single Mode (SM) ITU G652.d compliant cable. LC connectors shall be blue in colour for SM cable. Fibre Patch cords shall yellow in colour for SM. Page 6
7 Cable runs shall be contiguous with joints only allowed for pigtails within Patch Panels. External or internal joints shall not be used. All Patch Panels and fibres shall be labelled. The labelling scheme will be made available on request. All cable shall be tested as per TE 25 System specification and a 25% sample (selected by client) of the installation shall random tested by OTDR. OTDR test results shall be provided in both printed and electronic format. 3.3 External Cabling System - Copper The University has selected TE Krone as the preferred solutions provider for external copper cabling plant. External multi core copper cable shall be a polyester type with an internal moisture barrier. Conductor size shall be 0.64mm square. Cable runs shall be contiguous between wall mounted distribution frames. External or internal joints shall not be used. Cable termination shall be via TE Krone disconnection modules. Colour coding shall comply with manufacturer recommended schemes. The external cabling system shall be fully TE compliant and certified. 3.4 External Cabling Plant - Fibre The University has selected TE Krone as the preferred solutions provider for internal Fibre Cabling Systems. The preferred external Structured Fibre Cabling System is custom design, TE 25 System solution based on Tyco RTC -Series fibre enclosures utilising TE Krone Optic Fibre including LC connectors with pigtails. Fibre cable shall be Single Mode (SM) ITU G652.d compliant cable. LC connectors shall be blue in colour for SM cable. Fibre Patch cords shall be yellow in colour for SM. Cable runs shall be contiguous with joints only allowed for pigtails within Patch Panels. External or internal joints shall not be used. All Patch Panels and fibres shall be labelled. The labelling scheme will be made available on request. All cable shall be tested as per TE 25 System specification and a 25% sample (selected by client) of the installation shall random tested by OTDR. OTDR test results shall be provided in both printed and electronic format. Cables shall be permanently labelled at both ends and within pits, showing both origin and destination of cable. The labelling scheme will be made available on request. Cables shall have service loops (2 off) within each pit. Page 7
8 4 External Communications Infrastructure External communications infrastructure consists of compliant communications conduit and pits. Conduits shall have a minimum of 100mm diameter. Pits are required at any change of direction exceeding 30 degrees, however if bends exceeding 30 degrees are required for building entry, they shall be 90 degree bends of the large sweep type. Minimum Pits size shall be 900x900x900mm inner. Lids shall be Gatic, Class D compliant, regardless of pit location. The maximum lid size shall be 900x450mm with a minimum of 2 lids per pit. All pit lids shall be installed as per manufacturer s recommendation to ensure proper moisture sealing. Pit bases shall be of solid construction, concrete or bricked types with a provision for drainage. All conduit entries into pits or buildings shall be properly sealed and sleeved to prevent the ingress of moisture. Each building entry conduit shall be sealed within the pit with the Tyco T-Dux product. Pit lids shall be permanently marked with 100mm diameter engraved stainless steel plates. The engraving shall contain the wording Communications and indicate conduit directions. Page 8
9 5 Communication Rooms & Data Centres Communication Rooms Communications rooms shall be constructed as per Building Standards. They typically require: Power/UPS, Minimum of 2 x 15 amp under floor circuits using orange Clipsal 56C315 outlets Cooling Access Floor Security Access Lighting Fire Detection Environmental Monitoring Good cable access. 19 inch Rittal Rack consisting of the following items: Adelaide Uni Rack Part No XAU QT Y XAUPQ21EFEBK XAUCT42830B 2 S U E A Description 42U 800*2000*1000 ADL UNI SVD FRONT&REAR- RAL 9005 (black) Vertically Divided Vented doors front and rear. Comfort handle with 3524 lock, levelling feet and castors E A Side panel divided WD 2000x1000 RAL9005 E A DK POWERRAIL VERTICAL 21 WAY GPO 15AMP E A Cable duct 36U for H2000 RAL9005 E A DK 42RU * 300 CABLE TRAY- Black TS shall be consulted for the design of new communication rooms as well as for any proposed addition or modification to existing facilities Data Centres Data Centres shall be constructed on an individual basis. They require: Power Cooling Access Floor Security Access Lighting Fire Suppression and Detection Environmental Monitoring Good cable access. TS shall be consulted for the design of new facilities as well as for any proposed addition or modification to existing facilities. Page 9
10 6 Engaging TS & Authorisation of Works 6.1 Engaging TS The call centre should be contacted via a x33000 or The call centre will log this call and provide a reference number, which shall be used in any further correspondence with TS. An assigned TS Project Officer will make contact with the requestor within 72 hours of the request being lodged. 6.2 Authorisation of Works No IT&T Infrastructure work shall be tendered for until the relevant tender document has been authorised by TS. Authorisation will be via formal sign off in form of stamped and signed tender documents. 6.3 QA & Post construction documentation TS may conduct QA site inspections during construction to ensure compliance of works with the tender document. The Consultant, Project Officer or Contractor shall give TS 5 working days notice to take up the option of 1 st fix inspections during the construction stage. All work requires a formal handover sign off. The Consultant or Project Officer shall give ITS 5 days notice for handover inspections. TS reserves the right not to connect services if the handover sign off has not been completed. Written and electronic test results (in PDF or Microsoft Excel format) shall be submitted together with as installed documentation for all work carried out. Page 10

Although external fibre and external copper installations may not require the TE 25 System certification, any such works shall be carried out by TE Network design integrator 25 authorized installers.
