(Physics) Miami University Administrative Experience: Associate Provost for Educational Improvement and Innovation Founding Director, Center for Teaching Excellence and Program for Innovative Education; Faculty member in Higher Education Program, George Mason University present The position encompasses 5 major areas: 1) Support and education of GMU faculty in teaching, assessment, student learning, and educational scholarship. Special efforts working with new faculty, adjunct faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. 2) As part of Provost s senior staff, focus on policies relating to instruction, faculty evaluation, program assessment, and promoting and rewarding faculty educational excellence; assisting institution s research into educational effectiveness. 3) Organization and oversight of the university- funded undergraduate research program. 4) Planning and implementation of the Program for Innovative Education 5) Overseeing the University s Preparing Future Faculty program and partnerships Specific achievements include: Developing The Program for Innovation in Education, a new unit devoted to improving General Education. Its faculty members spend ½ time in their departments, focusing on Gen Ed courses and curriculum development, and ½ time with the Teaching Center, working on institution-wide issues. Chairing the faculty/administrative team that redesigned the university course evaluation form to base it on behavioral anchors. Led 4-year effort to research, design, and pilot the form and evaluate its effectiveness. Organizing a New Faculty Mentoring Program, to connect faculty in a support network. Organizing the first Colonial Academic Alliance Undergraduate Research Conference in Feb This 150 student conference now occurs annually on one of the CAA campuses. Administering University Teaching Awards, and supporting faculty for state and national awards. Chairing committees on Academic Integrity, Fostering Inter-unit Relations, and Adult Education. Grant writing for educational programs and undergraduate research. Participating as Provost rep. on institutional committees on General Education, Improving the Experience for High-Potential Students, Examining Grade Inflation, and Assessment of Student Competencies. 3 Principal Investigator/Director, Los Angeles Collaborative for Teacher Excellence (LACTE), ; Project Manager, Overall management of a 5-year $5.5 million NSF-funded program to improve the mathematics and science education of pre-service teachers, involving 10 institutions in greater Los Angeles. For more information see Assured that project ran effectively and met its articulated goals. Managed of the $1.1 million yearly budget, through 5 different institutions. Supervised one administrative employee and 14 part-time faculty. Oversaw project-related curriculum development 36 courses and modules in math and the sciences. Maintained relations with school districts, university administration, elected officials, the media, and NSF. Wrote press releases and other PR material. Organized the1996 annual NSF Teacher Collaboratives meeting in Washington D.C. for 100+ participants. Fundraising for supporting project activities post-nsf funding Department Chair, Physics Dept., Occidental College; Los Angeles, CA Led department of 6 full time faculty, 1 adjunct, and 2 staff. Managed departmental budget. Oversaw removal of research-grade reactor and construction of new lab space. Designed course schedules for the department, in conjunction with math and other science depts. Led searches for two new faculty members. Oversaw change from terms to semesters, including leading redesign of all physics courses to fit new schedule. Served as institutional interface with local congressional office. Congressional Science Fellow, sponsored by The American Physical Society Served in the Office of Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and in the House Space Subcommittee. Provided research and advising in areas of science, technology, defense, environment, and equity Wrote speeches and testimony Interfaced with government and private organizations Coordinated the California delegation task force on R&D and the Future of Federal Labs.
