1 A07/46 INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES for appointment as Skills Laboratory Clinical Director / DSM Undergraduate Medicine Clinical Skills Director (Part-time) DUNEDIN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE General Information A statement of general information for applicants for academic posts within the University is attached. This is a combined University and Otago District Health Board position (0.1 DHB 0.3 DSM), although the appointee will be an employee of the University. The University and its Divisional Structure Health Sciences is one of the four teaching divisions in the University, the others being Commerce, Humanities and Sciences (including Physical Education and Consumer and Applied Sciences). The Division of Health Sciences comprises the Faculty of Medicine with its four Schools (Dunedin School of Medicine, Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Otago School of Medical Sciences), the Faculty of Dentistry, the School of Pharmacy and the School of Physiotherapy. The University of Otago Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1874 and, until the establishment of the University of Auckland School of Medicine in 1967, was the only Medical School in New Zealand. Clinical teaching was expanded by the establishment of a Clinical School of the Faculty of Medicine at Christchurch which received its first fourth year students in 1973, and at Wellington which received its first intake of fourth year students in All University of Otago medical students complete their second and third year courses in Dunedin. At present, over 230 students each year enter the second year medical classes in Dunedin. For most students entry is competitive, either as a previous graduate following interview, or from the First Year Health Sciences programme by examination grades (60%) and UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) score (40%). For the fourth, fifth and sixth years of the medical course the class is divided into three similar sized groups for completion of their course at the Dunedin, Christchurch or Wellington Schools of Medicine. The Dunedin School of Medicine The Dunedin School of Medicine provides clinical teaching input to the second and third years of the medical degree programme, and is responsible for teaching in years 4-6 for those students who remain in Dunedin. DSM has six Departments. These are General Practice, Medical and Surgical Sciences, Pathology, Preventive and Social Medicine, Psychological Medicine, and Women s and Children s Health. The fourth year course introduces clinical experience in medicine, surgery, and psychological medicine. In fifth year, attachments are obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and child health, emergency medicine and musculoskeletal medicine, urban and rural general practice, and preventive
2 and social medicine. The sixth year course is a trainee intern year with a choice of options for practical experience, including a three-month elective period. The Faculty of Medicine is currently redeveloping the undergraduate medical course to a clinically focused programme, that will extend clinical teaching into the 2 nd year and integrate basic science teaching throughout the course. Considerable work has already been undertaken in the development of the new curriculum and establishing this innovative programme will continue to be a major initiative for the Faculty across the four schools in the next few years. Clinical skills teaching is a major focus of this redevelopment. There is a close relationship between DSM and the Otago District Health Board, allowing access to patients for student teaching and learning. Dunedin Hospital, with around 400 beds, is a regional hospital serving the population of the province of Otago, and providing some services (for example, oncology and neurosurgery), for a wider area including Southland. The Otago District Health Board also has rural hospitals and a comprehensive range of out-patient services. There is a regional helicopter retrieval service, and a full range of imaging services. Clinical experience for undergraduate medical students is also provided at Southern Health (Invercargill and Queenstown Hospitals), at the facilities of Waitaki District Health Services (Oamaru), Clutha Health First (Balclutha), Central Otago Health (Clyde), and Gore Health (Gore), the West Coast, and in General Practices throughout Otago and Southland. There is a videoconference link to Kew Hospital in Invercargill for students on placement there. A Rural Medical Immersion Programme is being piloted this year. In addition to medical students, the School is also responsible for teaching to undergraduate Science, Dental, Pharmacy, Physical Education, Medical Laboratory Science and Physiotherapy students. The biomedical science departments of Anatomy and Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Physiology are within the Otago School of Medical Sciences. The Dunedin School of Medicine has a proud history of world leading research. With the advent of performance based research funding, there is an even greater emphasis on and encouragement of research. It is expected that an appointee would spend at least 40% of their University time on research activities, and expectations of research outputs will be built into performance objectives. The Dunedin School of Medicine and the ODHB have established a joint research committee with the aim of promoting and supporting research in the School, and developing overall strategic direction. Research funding is available for research projects through the School, through the central University, and from outside funding agencies. An excellent Medical Library is housed on the first, second and third floors of the Sayers Building across the road from the Hospital. It contains some 138,000 volumes, and receives more than 1,600 periodicals currently. A comprehensive range of English language electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Current Contents, The Cochrane Library, Best Evidence, HealthStar, PsycINFO, PsycLIT, BioethicsLine, CINAHL, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts) are available on-line in the library and on personal computers throughout the Medical School. An important historical collection is located on the third floor and contains the incomparable Monro Collection of books and manuscripts, being the library of the remarkable father, son, and grandson, who, consecutively, held the Chair of Anatomy at Edinburgh University for 126 years from The Dean s Department and Clinical Skills The appointee will be responsible to the Dean of DSM and employed through the Dean s Department, although also reporting for DHB matters to the Chief Nursing Officer ODHB.
3 The ODHB and the Dunedin School of Medicine jointly operate a Skills Laboratory in the Fraser Building. This appointment is part of a process of development of that facilities function and role. A recent DHB restructuring brought the Skills Lab into a new group called the Knowledge Centre. The Knowledge Centre Manager has been appointed, as has the Operations Manager of the Skills Lab. Once the Clinical Director is appointed an Advisory Committee for the Skills Lab will be established, which the Clinical Director will chair. There is huge scope for innovation and development in the facility and in the processes of continued skills acquisition and maintenance for qualified staff as well as students. A major part of the role will be working with the School and the Faculty to develop a coherent Clinical Skills learning programme for undergraduate medical students. A Clinical Skills Director for the redeveloped 2 nd and 3 rd year curriculum has just been appointed by the Faculty. Duties and Responsibilities Please see attached job description. Date of Appointment Applicants are asked to indicate the date they would expect to be available to take up the appointment. Salary The appointee will either be employed on the University Medical/Dental academic scale at the appropriate level, or as a Professional Practice Fellow. Salary details on these scales will be available at interview. Contact Person Specific enquiries may be directed to Dr John Adams, Dean, Dunedin School of Medicine, Tel , john.adams@stonebow.otago.ac.nz Offer of the Position Should the University wish to offer you the position, a formal, written letter of offer will follow any verbal discussions that might be held with you. It is recommended that you do not resign from your current employment until you have received our written offer. The contents of this formal letter of offer and its attachments will constitute the entire agreement between the employee and the employer, and will supersede all previous representations, negotiations, commitments and communications, either written or oral between the parties. Any agreements will only be binding on the employer where they have been formally offered by the Human Resources Division and accepted by the employee.
