1 FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES SPECIFIC REGULATIONS FOR THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES 78.0 SHORT TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT 78.1 These regulations shall be called Specific Regulations for the M.B.B.S. programme and the Allied Health Sciences programmes of B.PT., M.PT., B.Sc. (Nursing) and M.Sc. (Nursing). of the Dr.M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Deemed University. These regulations are applicable to the students who are admitted to the M.B.B.S., B.PT., M.PT., B.Sc. (Nursing) and M.Sc. (Nursing) programmes in this University As per the decision of the Academic Council of this university, these regulations have been prepared by adopting the regulations of the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, the Medical Council of India and the Indian Nursing Council. SECTION C SPECIFIC REGULATIONS FOR B.Sc., (NURSING) and M.Sc., (NURSING) PROGRAMMES REGULATIONS FOR B.Sc. (NURSING) PROGRAMME AIM The aim of the undergraduate Nursing programme is to: a) Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services. b) Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community nursing services and conduct research studies in the area of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor, and manager in a clinical/public health setting OBJECTIVES On completion of the four year B.Sc. Nursing Programme the graduates will be able to:

2 1. Apply knowledge from physical, biological and behavioural sciences, medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities. 2. Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and groups. 3. Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups. 4. Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality care. 5. Utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care. 6. Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programmes. 7. Practice within the framework of code of ethics and professional conduct and acceptable standards of practice within the legal boundaries. 8. Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, and members of the health team in order to promote effective interpersonal relationship and teamwork. 9. Demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and groups in clinical/community health settings. 10. Participate effectively as members of the health team in health care delivery system. 11. Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills in clinical/community health settings. 12. Conduct need based research studies in various settings and utilize the research findings to improve the quality of care. 13. Demonstrate awareness, interest and contribute towards advancement of self and of the profession ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION The minimum educational requirement shall be the passing of Higher

3 Secondary School certificate Examination (12 years course) Or Senior School Certificate Examination (10+2), pre-degree Examination (10+2) or An equivalent with 12 years schooling from a recognized Board or University with Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and English with minimum of 50 % aggregate marks (PCBE) The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31 st December of the year of admission Candidate shall be Medically Fit SELECTION Selection of the candidates should be based on the merit of the entrance examination held by university or competent authority DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME Duration of the course shall be four years including internship MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION English shall be the medium of instruction for all the subjects of study and for examination COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE The course will commence from 1 st August of every year.

4 126.3 WORKING DAYS IN AN ACADEMIC YEAR Each Academic year shall consist of not less than 240 working days REGISTRATION A candidate admitted to the course shall be registered by remitting the prescribed fees along with the application form for registration duly filled in with in the stipulated dates COURSES OF STUDY FIRST YEAR Sl. Community Health Nursing CURRICULUM The curriculum and the syllabus for the course shall be as prescribed by the Academic Council based on INC norms form time to time SUBMISSION OF RECORD NOTE BOOKS:-

6 At the time of Practical examination, each candidate shall submit to the examiners the record note books of midwifery as a bonafide record of work done by the candidate INTERNAL ASSESSMENT a. A minimum of three written examinations viz. two sessional and one model exam shall be conducted in each subject during a year and the average marks of the three examinations shall be considered for the award of Internal Assessment. b. A minimum of one Practical examination shall be conducted in each subject. c. Clinical Evaluation marks will be considered for internal assessment. d. If a failed candidate does not appear for any Improvement mark examination or Re-examination in the failed subject, internal marks awarded for the previous examination shall be considered for his subsequent appearances. e. The internal assessment marks should be submitted to the university 15 days prior to the commencement of the theory examination ATTENDANCE REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO EXAMINATION A candidate is required to put in a minimum of 80 % of attendance in both theory and Practical separately in each subject A candidate lacking in the prescribed attendance in any one subject in theory & Practical in the first appearance shall not be permitted for admission to the examination of the Particular subject CONDONING LACK OF ATTENDANCE Condoning of shortage of attendance up to a maximum of 10% in the prescribed eligible attendance for admission to year end examination rests with the discretionary power of the Vice Chancellor.

7 A candidate lacking in attendance should submit an application in the prescribed form and remit the stipulated fee, 15 days prior to the commencement of the theory examination, The Head of the Department should satisfy himself on the reasonableness of the candidate s request while forwarding the application of the candidate to the Controller of Examinations, who would obtain the Vice-Chancellor s approval for admission to the examination. No application would be accepted if it is not forwarded through proper channel Condoning lack of attendance should be taken up for consideration under the following circumstances:- a. Any illness affecting the candidate Candidate should submit a medical certificate from registered medical practitioners. b. Any unforeseen tragedy in the family-the parents/guardian should give in writing about what had happened. c. Participation in SNA/NSS and other Co-Curriculum activities representing the institution or University RE-ADMISSION AFTER BREAK OF STUDY A separate regulation is available for all the UG/PG courses of this University for the readmission of candidates after a break of study (Refer section 17.0) DURATION OF COMPLETION OF B.Sc. (NURSING) PROGRAMME

8 The duration for completion of the B.Sc.(Nursing) programme is double the duration of the programme and the students have to pass within the said period, otherwise, they have to seek fresh admission INTERNSHIP Internship means 8 weeks of integrated clinical duties in which 2 weeks of evening and night shift duties are included Internship should be carried out 8 hours per hours per week Students during internship will be supervised by nursing teachers Fourth year final examination will be held only after completing internship YEAR END EXAMINATIONS Commencement of the Examination April /October If the date of commencement falls on Saturdays, Sundays or declared public holidays, the examination shall begin on the next working day The duration of the examination of each subject is 3 hours Carry Over of failed subjects. a. A Candidate has to pass in theory and Practical examinations separately in each of the paper. b. If a candidate fails in either theory or Practical of a subject, he/she has to re-appear for both the papers(theory and Practical) c. Maximum number of attempts permitted for each paper is 3 including first attempt.

9 d. A candidate failing in more than two subjects will not be promoted to the next year. e. Candidate shall not be admitted to the subsequent higher examination unless the candidate has passed the previous examinations Revaluation of Answer Papers Would be, as per the regulations, prescribed by the University for other under-graduate courses SCHEME OF EVALUATION DISTRIBUTION OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL MARKS FIRST YEAR Sl. 12 139.1 Minimum marks for pass in English is MINIMUM MARKS REQUIRED FOR PASS IN ALL OTHER SUBJECTS a) 50% of marks in the subject where internal evaluation alone is conducted. b) 50% of marks in university theory Examination and Internal evaluation taken together in the subject CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES a) Candidates who secure not less than 75% in each subject obtain distinction if he/she passes the examination in the first attempt. b) Candidates who pass the examination at the first appearance obtaining not less than 60% but below 75% of the aggregate marks shall be declared to have passed the examination in the First class. c) Candidates who pass the examination obtaining not less than 50% but below 60% of aggregate marks shall be declared to have passed the examination in the Second class REGULATIONS FOR M.Sc (NURSING) PROGRAMME AIM The M. Sc. (Nursing) programme is directed towards rendering training in Nursing, so as to enhance individual competence in order to fulfill requirements and to meet the global standards of Nursing Education and Practice OBJECTIVES On Completion of the Two years M.Sc. (Nursing) programme, the Post-Graduate will be able to

Sc. (Nursing) is a two years programme consisting of class room teaching, self academic activities and clinical postings. In the first year theoretical basis of fundamental nursing subjects are refreshed, advance nursing practices are analyzed and clinical speciality is understood. In the second year, the students learn nursing management. and clinical speciality. They have to submit one Dissertation in Nursing research. During these two years, the students will be posted in their area of clinical speciality. The learning programme includes seminars, journal reviews, case presentation, case discussions and classroom teaching. The students are encouraged to attend conferences and workshops to enhance their knowledge during their entire course of the study. University examinations are held at the end of first and second year. To fulfill their course completion, the students are required to complete and submit their dissertation ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA /ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 1) The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife or equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council. 2) The minimum education requirement shall be the passing of: B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55 % aggregate marks.

14 3) The candidate should have undergone B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing in an Institution which is recognized by Indian Nursing Council. 4) Minimum one year of work experience after basic B.Sc. Nursing. 5) Minimum one year of work experience prior or after post basic B.Sc. 15 2 nd Year 1) Nursing Management 2) Nursing Research (Dissertation) Clinical Specialty II* * Clinical Specialty- Medical Surgical Nursing (Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Neurosciences Nursing, Nephro-Urology Nursing, Orthopaedic Nursing, Gastro Enterology Nursing), Obstetric & Gynaecological Nursing, Child Health (Paediatric) Nursing, Mental Health (Psychiatric) Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing etc CURRICULUM AND SYLLABI The curriculum and syllabi prescribed by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University and the Nursing Council of India for the M. Sc. (Nursing) shall be adopted with the approval of the Academic Council of this University YEAR END EXAMINATION COMMENCEMENT OF THE EXAMINATION August/February ATTENDANCE REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO EXAMINATION. A candidate must have minimum 80% of attendance in theory and Practical of each subject for appearing in the examinations CONDONING LACK ATTENDANCE Condoning shortage of attendance up to a maximum of 10% in the prescribed

The Head of the Department should satisfy himself on the reasonableness of the candidate s request while forwarding the application of the candidate to the Controller of Examinations, who would obtain the Vice-Chancellor s approval for admission to the examination ADMISSION AFTER BREAK OF STUDY Candidates having a break of study of two years and more from the date of admission and more than two spells of break will not be considered for readmission. Candidates having break of study shall be considered for readmission provided they are not subjected to any disciplinary action and no charges are pending or contemplated against him/her. Readmission of candidates is subjected to the approval of the Vice Chancellor DISSERTATION Every Candidate pursuing M. Sc. (Nursing) degree programme is required to carry out work on a selected research project under the guidance of a recognized research guide. The result of such a work shall be submitted in the form of dissertation TENTATIVE SCHEDULE FOR DISSERTATION a) Submission of the research proposal at the end of 9 th month of I Year. b) Submission of dissertation at the end of 9 th month of II year. c) There should be a Dissertation Committee consisting of 5 members.

17 d) Evaluation of the Dissertation shall be done by One Internal and One External Examiner and the Viva-Voce should be conducted jointly for 100 marks each. e) The Internal examiner should be the Guide and the External Examiner should be Nursing faculty/nursing expert in the same clinical speciality SCHEME OF EVALUATION Distribution of Internal and External marks for Theory and Practical. Theory Practical 1 st Year Internal External Internal External Total Nursing Education Advance Nursing Practice Nursing Research and Statistics Clinical Specialty-I nd Year Nursing Management Dissertation & Viva Voce Clinical Specialty-II Minimum pass marks shall be 50% in each of the theory and Practical separately A candidate has to pass in theory and Practical separately in each of the subject If a candidate fails either in theory or Practical of a subject, he/she has to reappear for both theory and Practical of the respective subject.

18 150.5 Maximum number of attempts permitted for each paper is 3 including the first attempt The maximum period to complete the course successfully should not exceed 4 years A candidate who fails in any subject shall proceed to the II year No candidate shall be admitted to the subsequent II year examination, unless the candidate has passed all the subjects of the 1 st year M.Sc (Nursing) examination Supplementary examinations may be held, when necessary One Internal and One External examiner should jointly conduct the Practical examination for each student CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES a) Candidates who secure not less than 75% in each subject obtain distinction, if he/she passes the examination in the first attempt. b) Candidates who pass the examination at the first appearance obtaining not less than 60% but below 75% of the aggregate marks shall be declared to have passed the examination in the First class. c) Candidates who pass the examination obtaining not less than 50% but below 60% of aggregate marks shall be declared to have passed the examination in the Second class.
