1 Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences: Undergraduate Degrees and Diplomas Regulations Made by the Academic Board of Monash University Version incorporating amendments as at 1 March 2012 Part I General 1. Degrees and diplomas 1.1 The degrees listed in Schedules I and II may be undertaken pursuant to Part II of these regulations. 1.2 The diplomas listed in Schedule III may be undertaken pursuant to Part III of these regulations. 2. Interpretations In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears "candidate" for the purposes of Part II means a candidate for a degree; and for the purposes of Part III means a candidate for a diploma; "course of study" for the purposes of Part II means the course of study for a degree determined by or under these regulations; and for the purposes of Part III means the course of study for a diploma determined by or under these regulations; "credit points" for the purposes of Part II means the measurement used to express the weight of a unit or other work requirement for a degree; and for the purposes of Part III means the measurement used to express the weight of a unit or other work requirement for a diploma; "dean" means the dean of the faculty; "degree" means a degree listed in Schedule I or Schedule II and

2 'pass degree' means a degree listed in Schedule I; and 'honours degree' means a degree listed in Schedule II; "diploma" means a diploma listed in Schedule III; "faculty" means the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; "faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty; and "faculty information handout" means the faculty section of the undergraduate handbook of the university or such other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound, loose leaf or in electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time. Part II Degrees General 3. Course of study 3.1 The course of study for a pass degree consists of units; and an honours degree consists of units, a thesis or project, and practical work. 3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the particulars of a course of study and in relation to the particulars may determine any matter including but not limited to requirements concerning number, timing, content and duration; clinical placements and other practical work; in relation to a thesis or project, supervision and distribution; attendance and participation; credit points; assessment; and satisfactory completion. 3.3 The faculty board may determine special requirements in relation to a course of study undertaken through off campus learning; or as part of a double degree pursuant to these regulations. 3 3.4 The faculty board must cause each determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout. 3.5 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate in any year of a course of study may only undertake the units and other work determined by the faculty board for that particular year. 4. Candidature 5. Credit 4.1 Candidature may be full time or, with the approval of the dean, part time; where the faculty board so determines, may be undertaken through offcampus learning; and subject to the regulations, must be continuous. 4.2 A candidate may, with the consent of the dean, transfer from full time to parttime candidature or vice versa and, in this event, must complete the course of study in the time specified by the dean. A candidate granted credit towards a degree must complete the course of study in the time specified by the faculty board. 6. Work in another educational institution The dean may authorise a candidate for a degree to undertake, in another educational institution, specified work towards the degree; and in this event, must specify the credit that will be granted in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations, towards the degree in respect of any such work satisfactorily completed. 7. Honours grades An honours degree or a pass degree with honours may, at the discretion of the faculty board, be awarded in one of the following grades: Honours 1 (H1) Honours 2, Division A (H2A) or Division B (H2B) Honours 3 (H3) 8. 4 8.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time. 8.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at sometime during candidature, provided that the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study. Division I Pass degrees 9. Interpretation In this division 'degree' means a pass degree listed in Schedule I. 10. Time limits Except as otherwise provided in the regulations or as otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the maximum period of candidature for a degree, including any period of intermission, is the period prescribed by the faculty board and published in a faculty information handout. 11. Intermission The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission for a continuous period of up to 12 months; and for a maximum of three years in total. 12. Single units 12.1 The faculty board, on the recommendation of the dean, may permit a person who is not a candidate to enrol for one or more units in a course of study A person who satisfactorily completes a unit pursuant to subsection 12.1 and is subsequently admitted to candidature for the relevant degree must be given credit for that unit in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations. 13. Double degrees 13.1 A candidate may with the consent of the faculty board, undertake two degrees of the faculty concurrently ; or Page 4

5 with the consent of both faculty boards, undertake a degree under these regulations concurrently with a degree of another faculty A candidate for a double degree is not eligible for an award under these regulations until both degrees have been satisfactorily completed A candidate undertaking a double degree may, with the consent of the faculty board, transfer to candidature for one degree or the degree of this faculty only Where a candidate transfers to candidature for one degree or the degree of this faculty only, the faculty board must specify 14. Qualification the work required to be completed by the candidate to qualify for the award of the degree; and the time within which the work must be completed. A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a degree qualifies for the award of the degree and, in the case of a degree listed in Part B of Schedule 1 may, at the discretion of the faculty board, be awarded the degree in one of the honours grades listed in section 7. Division II Honours degrees 15. Interpretation In this division 'candidate' means a candidate for an honours degree. 16. Admission to candidature 16.1 An applicant for admission to candidature must have 17. Time limits qualified for the award of a pass degree deemed appropriate by the faculty board and specified in a faculty information handout; or other qualifications and experience deemed equivalent or a satisfactory alternative by the faculty board Except as otherwise provided in the regulations or as otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the course of study for an honours degree must be completed, including any period of intermission, in a minimum of one and a maximum of two years of full time candidature or; in the case of part time candidature, a minimum of two and a maximum of four years. 6 18. Intermission The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission for a maximum period of one year. 19. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for an honours degree is qualified for the award of the degree in the appropriate grade listed in section 7, as determined by the faculty board. Part III Diplomas 20.
