5 U of M School of Dentistry: Curriculum Goals for Dental Therapy The standard of care taught to dental therapists will be identical to that taught to dental students; Within the defined scope of practice, competency requirements for dental therapists will be identical to those which apply to dental students; Health promotion & disease prevention will be core elements of the educational program; Program will be structured to complement, rather than compete with, other dental professionals;

6 U of M School of Dentistry: Curriculum Goals for Dental Therapy Graduates will contribute to reducing the cost of care and to improving access for underserved populations; Education will occur in a professional environment which includes dental hygienists & dentists, to ensure graduates are prepared to work in a team setting; Program will provide a foundation for professional advancement and career growth; Graduates will find viable career opportunities in the dental marketplace; and Program could be replicable by other dental schools.

20 Outreach Education Outreach experiences provide an opportunity for dental therapy students to: Develop a broad understanding of the community and social responsibilities they will have as dental professionals Treat a diversity of patients with a variety of oral health care needs Enhance their clinical skills Participate in inter-professional learning experiences. Dental Therapy students will spend about 8 weeks in a rural clinic and/or an urban clinic. A 3 rd outreach site is being developed which will be oriented toward treating children
