Competitive Edge Alexandra Mays (Development Manager, YST) Peter Knight (SGO, Herefordshire) Workshop outcomes: To establish an understanding of Competitive Edge; To establish an understanding of Competitive Edge; To be familiar with the Competitive Edge questions; To work collaboratively to identify areas of strength and areas for development;
Background Competitive Edge is, in essence, the name for a high quality self-review process. The self-review is an opportunity for Local Organising Committees (LOCs), School Games Organisers (SGOs) and Project Ability lead schools to reflect on Sainsbury s School Games and Change 4 Life development and delivery that has taken place, providing an opportunity to reflect, as well as identify areas of strength and actions to progress forwards.
Competitive Edge Should you choose to utilise Competitive Edge, we recommend that it is to be completed collaboratively by the Lead Applicant of the LOC, LOC chair, SGOs and Project Ability lead school, to support your county area in making informed decisions and agree actions that will allow you to continue to work together to benefit the young people in their area. Submitted responses can then be utilised by the Youth Sport Trust (YST) to allocate targeted support and resources, in areas of development. Top Tip: if LOCs have a wider remit than the Sainsbury s School Games and Change 4 Life offer, Competitive Edge can also be used to self-review this additional work.
Why self-review? Task 1: Create a list of reasons that illustrate how self-review can help you achieve in your role. Think about: - What you have achieved; - What you want to achieve next; - How you re going to get there.
What is Competitive Edge? Competitive Edge is a series of questions to self-review against, under the headings: Participants - young people, well being and health; Structure - the partners, structures, facilities, processes, knowledge and expertise; Climate - the culture, feel and day-to-day function experienced by young people and partners. There are 3 questions (bold text) under each heading. The bullet points under each question are coaching points to help you identify your RAGG rating. Groups should come to an agreed consensus for each question and provide a RAGG rating. They should also decide what actions are required to progress an area of work.
RAGG rating Body Bullets Bullets Bullets Body Body Body
Task 2: Select a heading and work through the questions, allocating a RAGG rating for each one. Identify areas of strength and areas for development.
Outline of process LOC to decide on the preferred self-review process and set a date to meet with key partners in order to complete the self-review (to consist of a minimum of SGO, Lead Applicant and Project Ability lead school). Lead Applicant to disseminate self-review questions to key partners, who identify where they contribute and collect relevant evidence to support views. Meeting to discuss questions, identify strengths and challenges, agree RAGG rating and set actions. If all LOC members are not directly involved in completing the Competitive Edge selfreview, then share findings at the next meeting, agree responsibilities for actions and timescales for reviewing.
Task 3: Working in pairs, allocate the following roles; Contributor and Coach. Contributor: Share an area for development you have identified as part of your self-review. Coach: Coach the Contributor, using questioning, to support them in identifying actions and solutions to progress in the identified area. Swap roles and repeat.
Plan Do - Review The Competitive Edge self-review tool is a live document that groups can continually add to and update. The Competitive Edge self-review tool will take the format of an online survey. Lead Applicants will be ed the link to the online survey along with a password. The password will allow Lead Applicants to log in and out of the survey, save changes and then submit the data when it has been finalised.
Next steps The Competitive Edge Guidance (including the questions) can be found on the Sainsbury s School Games website. All Lead Applicants will be ed a unique login, password and link so that they can access the online tool. LOCs who decide to use the tool, will be asked to submit their responses once per term (dates TBC)
Competitive Edge Workshop outcomes: To establish an understanding of Competitive Edge; To be familiar with the Competitive Edge questions; To work collaboratively to identify areas of strength and areas for development.
