16 Emergency Notification System Students are automatically enrolled but can manage settings through CentralLink My Account > Central Alert Keep the alerts restricted to student numbers, rather than listing parents. List each number only once. Duplicating numbers will yield many calls!

17 Paying Tuition Also accessed through My Favorites While you re in there: Setup an authorized payer profile while your student is still home. It s easier now than coordinating by phone later!

18 Getting on CMU s network It s very simple and you can start the process from home!

19 Preparation You ll need three things 1. A Global ID and password 2. Up-to-date antivirus and OS updates 3. An internet connection

Computer Security Up-to-date patches to your OS Windows: All Programs > Windows Update Mac OS X: Apple Menu > System Update Up-to-date antivirus software Required for Windows only but it never hurts to be safe on a Mac! No-cost antivirus software for Windows (Microsoft Essentials) can be obtained at windows.microsoft.com/mse Call the Help Desk for our latest recommendations on Mac OS X antivirus software.

22 3. An Internet connection Which, if you don t have at home, you can probably get at your local library. Once you re online

23 Go ahead and get registered! You can and should! try this from home. Visit Download the Client Security Agent If you re not up-do-date, it will tell you what to do to get updated Once registered, you know you re all set. Just re-register the week before coming to campus to get everything finalized.

24 Still having problems? We have you covered! Stop in at one of our Depot Stations for on-site assistance. Look for posters in the dorms to find the closest Depot, or just ask at the front desk!

25 Some things to keep in mind on CMU s network:

26 Peer to Peer file sharing: keep it legal!

27 Wireless routers : Don t bring them, You won t need them! Wireless printers: Turn off Wireless!

28 Bandwidth quota is in place 100 GB download 20 GB upload Exceeding EITHER will result in network deactivation for one week. In many cases, students don t realize that something is using their computer s connection so heavily.

30 Storage Dropbox and Google Drive are great ways to store documents and other files to make them accessible in multiple locations. CMU-provided UDrives can hold up to 5GB of data on secured CMU servers. Office 365 s OneDrive feature can store up to 1TB of files in the cloud.

31 More Storage Remember: the more these devices are used to store this info especially in the cloud the more secure your student should keep them. Consider passwordprotecting computers and mobile devices, and always keep service passwords secure! Visit the OIT website for more details on these services!
