INSIDE 2014 AND BEYOND OUR COVER As we look to the future growth of the College, we want to build relationships and expand our programs to maintain our world-class reputation as a leader in nursing education. As our collective footprint grows, so does the need for more room room for state of the art simulation, teaching space, student common areas, wellness programming, and so on. Last year, Bon Secours Richmond Health System announced that our future home will be the Westhampton School in Richmond, Va. While a move of such proportion will take some time to fully realize, we continue to advance the College here on Magellan Parkway. We are pleased to share some of these developments. 4 LOOKING TO THE FUTURE This last year has been one of tremendous growth and exciting possibilities for the College. In March, we welcomed Dr. Barbara Sorbello as our new dean of nursing. Barbara joined us from Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, where she served as the administrative director for professional development and retention and the Magnet and Pathway to Excellence program director. She brings a wealth of experience in leadership, strategic planning, change management, program development, and team-building skills that truly embodies the values of Bon Secours. Her commitment to developing others and providing the resources needed to create and sustain success are invaluable to our program as it continues its attainment of world-class excellence in nursing education. As we prepare for the future, our RN-BSN completion degree program recently underwent a revision to better adapt to the changing educational preparedness demanded of today s nurses. The new curriculum began this fall, as our program saw a 65 percent increase in enrollment. Additionally, Bon Secours Virginia announced that the historic Westhampton School, a former elementary and high school in Richmond s West End, will become our new home after extensive renovations over the next few years. Our hope is to continue the rich tradition of education in the halls where students once studied. Through these changes, our constant focus remains our students. Providing scholarships and other ways to offset the cost of tuition helps ensure a quality education without the burden of debt. This last year, we granted 254 awards totaling more than $327,000 thanks to our generous donors. As we progress, we hope to add to the number of scholarships we offer, impacting future nurses for generations to come. FROM THE PROVOST This last year has been one of tremendous growth and exciting possibilities for the College. Dr. Melanie Green, Vice President & Provost I am very fortunate to be part of the fellowship, collaboration and giving spirit that we embrace here at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing. We are truly growing together, building our future. With Blessings, Melanie H. Green, PhD, RN, CNE Vice President and Provost 4 GROWING TOGETHER Annual Report 2014

WELCOME OUR NEW DEAN OF NURSING Dr. BARBARA SORBELLO BEGAN HER ROLE IN MARCH OF 2014 AS OUR NEW DEAN OF NURSING after an extensive search to bring an experienced nurse, educator and administrator to our College and drive our programs to the next level of nursing excellence. We are thrilled to have her join our leadership team. Originally from New York City, Dr. Sorbello s childhood ambitions centered around caring and nurturing professions such as nursing and teaching. I am the second of four children and early on took on the role of caring for my brother and sisters, and all the pets in the neighborhood, she recalled. Family members in teaching, nursing and education were also influential as they shared interesting stories about their careers and how they felt they made a difference in the world. After graduating from Hunter College Bellevue School of Nursing with a bachelor s in nursing, she began her career at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center in Medical Surgical nursing, which she says provided a solid foundation for her career. In the years since, Dr. Sorbello has held a wide variety of staff and management nursing positions, as well as positions as an educator in hospitals and colleges, growing as an individual through helping others. She was drawn to Bon Secours Richmond Health System after researching several organizations in Central Virginia. The mission and vision of Bon Secours aligned closely with her personal mission and philosophical framework of Nursing as Caring. As a Caring Science scholar, Dr. Sorbello was drawn to the work done at Bon Secours and she embraced Watson s theory of Human Caring, the philosophical framework adopted by Bon Secours. Dr. Sorbello accepted a leadership position at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in 2008 and continued to work on her doctoral degree in nursing, which she completed in Her passion and talent for developing the next generation of professionals and leaders in nursing was evident to colleagues; when the dean of nursing position became available, she said it seemed like a natural fit to apply. I was ready for a change and missed interacting with faculty and students. I believe it s good to step outside of your comfort zone and continue to grow in different directions. When I chose to complete a PhD in nursing, I knew that I would transition to higher education in my future. Today, Dr. Sorbello is shaping the future of our nursing programs, impacting the nurses we educate and how they will care for us. She believes that nurses play an integral role in the inter-professional teams that care for members of our community. She stressed, Nurses must be able to challenge the status quo, create a culture of inquiry, implement evidence based practice and seek new knowledge. The future of health care includes a broader focus on care provided outside of the acute care setting. Nursing education must include theoretical and practical knowledge that will prepare nurses to not only practice in several settings, but also to be nimble enough to embrace change. What s ahead for Dr. Sorbello? She wants to continue to advance our world class education and see our programs grow, while still maintaining a personal and family feel that exists here at the College. 6 GROWING TOGETHER Annual Report 2014

LEADING THE WAY FACULTY & STAFF DEVELOPMENTS Chris-Tenna Perkins, PhD, RN Associate Dean of Nursing Dr. Perkins was selected along with Dr. Sorbello to participate in the AACN-sponsored Leadership for Academic Nursing Program for new deans. The program aims to evaluate and enhance leadership skills, provide mentorship opportunities for strategic networking, assess specific goals, and build partnerships. Ashley E. Racine, MEd Director of Student Success Mrs. Racine was elected as the Advising Students with Disabilities Chair of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Racine assumed this leadership role in October 2014 and will serve in this position for two years. The NACADA promotes quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to ensure the educational development of students. Holly Pugh, MSHA, RN Director of Clinical Simulation Center Ms. Pugh was selected for a year-long Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators, a National League for Nursing faculty leadership development initiative. The program is designed for educators interested in assuming a leadership role in the research or administration of simulation programs in nursing education. JeanMarie Digges, MSN, RN, CPNP New Instructor Ms. Digges has spent nearly a decade working as a pediatric nurse, most recently at Bon Secours St. Mary s Hospital. Last year she began work as a clinical and didactic instructor before joining our faculty full-time. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Maryland and her Master of Science in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. Catherine Mikelaites, MSN, RN-BC, CMSRN New Instructor After completing undergraduate studies at The College of William and Mary, Mrs. Mikelaites worked in nonprofit fundraising before she decided to pursue a career in nursing. She earned her diploma from our college and began her nursing career at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center. After gaining considerable leadership experience and earning her MSN from Loyola University, she transitioned to a clinical educator. She is currently enrolled in the DNP in nursing education program at George Washington University. Robin Nasi, MSN, RNC-OB New Instructor With an early career focus on pediatrics, Mrs. Nasi shifted her attention to obstetrics 11 years ago and has since received certification in in-patient obstetric care. With more than 28 years of nursing experience that includes several years at Bon Secours St. Francis, her passion lies in clinical education and mentoring students. She received her bachelor s degree in nursing from College of St. Scholastica (Minnesota) and her Master of Science in nursing and health care education from University of Phoenix. Melissa Roberson, MSN, RN, CNRN New Instructor Education has always been part of Ms. Roberson s career, regardless of the role. She has provided a variety of educational support for local hospitals, community colleges and for nursing associations. It was a natural transition to accept a full-time faculty role, after a semester of teaching here as an adjunct. She earned a bachelor s in fine art from Longwood University before embarking on a degree in nursing from VCU. Ms. Roberson completed her Master of Science in nursing from Liberty University in Lara Ratliff, MSN, RN, WHNPO-BC New Instructor Ms. Ratliff joins the College with 20 years of nursing experience. She spent a decade in labor and delivery, postpartum, nursery, and gynecological units, and another ten years as an educator in women s health in a hospital setting and collegiate level. 8 A LIFETIME OF SERVICEÖ Scholarships can make a real difference in the cost of education for students, often closing the financial gap after other financial aid has been exhausted. This year the College was able to offer four new scholarships thanks to the generosity of long-time nursing education supporter, Thomas N.P. Johnson III. Early in his career Mr. Johnson, now a managing director for a regional securities firm, served as an aeromedic in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, which helped shape his interest and commitment to help future nursing professionals. He said, As a medic, you are put in stressful situations, while expected to offer the best care possible. Nurses offer that kind of high-level care. Mr. Johnson s support of the nursing profession and of the College has grown through the years, beginning with providing resources to purchase audio visual equipment several years ago. We were pleased to learn of his desire to create four new scholarships. Two scholarships (both Smith scholarships) were created in memory of his uncles, and the others were dedicated to men who have inspired him during their commendable lives and military careers. These scholarships are: Flight Lieutenant Parke Farr Smith The RAF Merit Scholarship Flight Lieutenant Smith, born and raised in Richmond, Va., joined the Royal Air Force in He was one of the last U.S.pilots accepted into the RAF during World War II. During his military flying career he piloted Spitfires, Hurricanes and Mustangs in numerous explorations and combat missions over Europe and North Africa, serving with distinction. Lieutenant James Alexander Smith III The USNR Merit Scholarship Lieutenant Smith served our country as a Naval Aviator and was killed in action November 5, He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight during action against Japanese enemy forces. Lieutenant Smith flew planes courageously and with aggressive determination, conducting himself with grace under the most dangerous flying conditions. General Thomas Nelson, Jr. The Virginia Militia (SDI) Merit Scholarship Mr. Johnson is a descendant of General Thomas Nelson, Jr., who is considered one of the U.S. Founding Fathers having signed the Declaration of Independence as a member of the Virginia delegation. General Nelson proudly served as Commander of the Virginia Militia before he became Virginia s fourth governor. Airman First Class William Hart Pitsenbarger The USAF MOH Merit Scholarship Airman Pitsenbarger was killed in action on April 11, 1966 as he courageously rescued and treated wounded soldiers as a para-rescue crew member while serving in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He repeatedly put himself at risk during enemy gunfire to save the lives of others without regard for his own life. His actions were truly selfless and exemplify being awarded of the Congressional Medal of Honor. SERVING OUR STUDENTS A total of 16 College of Nursing students received one of these scholarships this past year. Mariah Blystone, a thirdyear nursing student at BSMCON was awarded one of the Flight Lieutenant Parke Farr Smith RAF Merit Scholarships. She said of this financial gift, My mother was a surgical technician in the Army, and today is a registered nurse. She has instilled in me the values from her military service and taught me that your patient is your first priority. I look forward to being the best nurse I can be by making someone s life better; this scholarship helps me in fulfilling that goal. Mr. Johnson is a firm believer in the benefits of scholarships. I was the beneficiary of a multiple year scholarship for my education and I was always very grateful for the generosity of that family member, he said. These nursing students, in many cases, have a family and a job and it is amazing to me how they are able to juggle everything while attending nursing school. If I can alleviate at least some of the financial stress for them, that gives me great pleasure. My main purpose for establishing these scholarships is to help the next generation of nurses become tops in their field. 8 GROWING TOGETHER Annual Report 2014

OUR COLLEGE AMBASSADORS BUILDING THE FUTURE WITH STUDENT PROGRAMS Making the student experience rich with opportunity is what we strive for here at BSMCON. After listening to feedback from our students who wanted to connect with one another and with the College, build leadership and public speaking skills, serve in different capacities, and provide mentorship we were eager to create a program that met student needs and aligned with the goals of the College. Following an overwhelming response from interested candidates, 24 students were selected after a competitive application process to serve this inaugural year. Among the various opportunities for student ambassadors to serve: acting as student representatives at various events such as information sessions, orientation, graduation, focus groups, etc. Ambassadors will speak to prospective students and families, answer questions, and give campus tours. The ambassadors will help market our campus resources such as peer tutoring and academic counseling, to further students opportunities for success. Ambassadors will serve as informal college spokesmen for the many services offered to students; making themselves available to students for questions, and receiving information. While the program is still very new, Kariayn Peach, a second semester junior, has enjoyed being a College Ambassador. I applied so that I could do my part in Being a part of the program makes me feel like I m an important part of the college. Representing the College during new student orientations, campus tours and graduations makes my time here impactful for future nurses. Cameron Reynolds, sophomore nursing student a school that is such a huge part of my life. She added, I wanted to have the opportunity to impact future students because I found the student perspective very helpful when I was choosing a nursing program myself. In addition to providing these students with a valuable experience, our goal is to enrich the College on a greater scale. Students are the pulse of our campus. Having their participation woven into the fabric of our admissions events, student services, marketing and so on improves every facet of the student experience. At the end of the day, that s what we re striving for, said Leslie Winston, dean of Student Services. BUILDING OUR FUTURE Annual Report

EXTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES STUDENTS SCRUB UP FOR THE SUMMER This past summer, 13 of our students were accepted into eight-week long nurse externships at Richmond area hospitals. This was a keen opportunity to exercise skills they ve been honing in simulation lab and during clinical hours while working as part of a team. We sat down with a few of them to hear what they took away from their experiences. It s All About Teamwork Angela Bassano Bryant, a senior graduating this December, was a nurse extern at St. Mary's Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. She says of her experience, My most valuable takeaway was the importance of teamwork. I was lucky enough to extern on a unit where the nurses truly cared about one another, even at the most stressful and busiest of times. She added, When you have a team that works well together, it makes all the difference in the world to our patients and to each other. Fellow senior Linda Anderson said teamwork cannot be undervalued. I truly felt that I was a part of the team at Richmond Community Hospital and loved being able to jump in and help whenever I could. Don t Forget About Time Management For others, managing time and patient load was a significant part of the learning process. Becky Newman, who completed an externship in the General Surgical Unit at St. Mary s, said it was much different caring for one to two patients for a couple of hours then quickly shifting to five patients while handling admissions and discharges throughout the day! Caroline Price, who completed her externship at St. Mary's Hospital on the Intermediate Care Unit agreed. She said, Learning how to prioritize patient care as well as practice my critical thinking skills was crucial. Invaluable Hands-On Experience A major theme we heard often was receiving hands-on experience! Caitlin Thompson, who spent her summer at St. Mary s Spine Center, received applied training that will help better prepare her for her first position as a nurse, as she cared for patients after back and neck surgeries. Time spent in the Coronary Care Unit at St. Mary s proved invaluable to Lauren Owens, also graduating this December. I was able to start IVs, draw blood, perform daily patient care, assess patients, insert Foley catheters, observe PICC line insertions, and much more, she said. BUILDING OUR FUTURE Annual Report

GLOBAL OUTREACH BEYOND OUR COMMUNITY Each year a team of our nursing students, along with members of our faculty, go on a mission trip to provide care and education to disadvantaged populations of rural Haitian communities. The team provides care to thousands of Haitians who wouldn t have otherwise received any while building servant leadership and bringing a heightened sense of cultural awareness to all who participate. The 2014 Haiti Mission Team completed their trip in March and was humbled by the experience. I have never seen happier people; they have very minimal resources, the living conditions are poor, and the people are in desperate need of medical care but through it all they smile, said student Joanne Whitehead. Students and faculty worked from makeshift clinics and provided care for hundreds of Haitians each day. TEAM HAITI 2014 Senior Aynsley Irvin said they treated acute conditions including acid reflux, fungal and bacterial infections, and anemia. The most prevalent chronic condition we saw and treated was uncontrolled hypertension Haiti s leading cause of death. Kathy Faw, BSMCON faculty member and alumna who has traveled with the team for several years, says she is inspired to return year after year because education is vital to help these communities. We had a woman bring in her child who had an ear infection, she said. The woman had been given antibiotics for her child, but didn t understand they needed to be taken orally and not applied directly to the ear. Due to that misunderstanding, the child now had a severe infection both in and outside of the ear. She added, Bringing supplies, taking blood pressures, delivering nursing care that s very important and necessary but it begins with education. A MISSION TO BRING CHANGE Each year as our team prepares for their trip to Haiti, they rely heavily on donated supplies not readily available for Haitians in these rural villages. Students, faculty and staff can donate items such as pain relievers, vitamins, cough drops, antibiotic and fungal creams, eye drops, eye glasses and baby formula. These small items go a long way to improve the life of mother, father or child. 14 GROWING TOGETHER Annual Report 2014

ALUMNI UPDATE FROM STUDENT TO SOLDIER TO STANDOUT TASHA YOUNG, MBA, RN IS A BRIGHT STAR TO WATCH Tasha (Shelton) Young remembers applying to BSMCON after she attended an open house. I fell in love with the school and how it differed from other programs, she said. I had applied to other schools but quickly realized this was where I belonged; I haven t looked back since. It s been 11 years since Tasha was a student here, having graduated with honors in 2003 with a nursing diploma before we transitioned to a baccalaureate degree program. She s achieved a lot in the last decade, but the decision to become a nurse wasn t one without sacrifice. My children lived with their father in Japan while I completed my studies. Thankfully BSMCON had, at the time, an accelerated program, from which my class was the first to graduate. Upon graduation Tasha secured a position at a local hospital as a critical care nurse. However her path would soon change when, in 2004, she was recruited into the United States Army Nurse Corps. A decade later, she is now a Captain. Along the way, she completed her bachelor of science in nursing from University of Virginia in Eventually, Tasha transitioned from the clinical field to managed care, and is now employed as a business change manager for a health benefits company. While she recently earned her Master of Business Administration, her greatest achievement was being selected as a finalist for the Georgia March of Dimes 2013 Nurse of the Year. She says of her achievements, I could not have been as successful as a nurse without the education and mentoring of the staff at BSMCON, and I would like to thank the school for preparing me to be a giving, compassionate and intelligent nurse. MORE CLASS NOTES Karen Hooper Marlowe, Diploma 69, recently retired after 44 years as a registered nurse. She has many wonderful memories over the years, but one of her most rewarding was to see one of her young patients learn to manage her eating disorder, become a nurse and is now a spokeswoman and leader in the eating disorder community. She attended Karen s retirement party, symbolic of the full circle of her career. Would you like to see your story here? elia_imler@bshsi.org. Michael K. Steward, Diploma 07, has been employed with Bon Secours for ten years. Michael received his BSN from the University of Phoenix in He wrote that his current position as part of the Connect Care team is a good blend of his nursing training and his time previously in the U.S. Air Force as an electronics engineer. He also teaches an NCLEX review course that has assisted the College to continue its 100 percent pass rate. Michelle Boardman, Diploma 08, received her BSN from South University in 2011 and recently completed a dual degree from Grand Canyon University with a MSN/MBA. She is currently an administrative nursing supervisor at St. Mary s Hospital in Richmond, Va. Her goal is to continue on to unit based management and then administration. She has taught at the Emergency Department Skills Fair, participated in the Explorer s Camp at St. Francis, acted as a preceptor and, through the shared governance committee, spearheaded efforts for wristband standardization across Bon Secours Richmond.
