Das Desertec Konzept und die Desertec Industrial Initiative Christoph Schlichter, RWE Dea AG Hamburg, 27. Oktober 2010 SEITE 1
Desertec The Desertec concept Objectives and status of dii Role and contribution of RWE SEITE 2
Plans to produce power in the desert are not new Solar history Frank Shuman (pioneer in applying parabolic trough technology in desert): "One thing I am sure of and that is that the human race must finally utilize direct sun power or revert to barbarism" 1912 first installed parabolic trough collector by Shuman in Meadi, Egypt (produced the equivalent of 55 horsepower) Shuman planned to install no less than 20,250 square miles of reflectors in the Sahara World War I and the discovery of new oil fields stopped his plans SEITE 3
Three BMU-sponsored studies by DLR form the basis for the current Desertec concept SEITE 4
Basic approach of DLR concept is the interconnection of renewable generation across EUMENA by HVDC Area sufficient to cover the power demand for the world! SEITE 5
Generation: Concentrating Solar Power has advantages compared to photovoltaics in desert areas Concentrating Solar-Thermal-Power-Plants (CSP): Focusing of solar power with the aid of mirrors Transformation of radiation into heat Power generation by steam turbines Turbines can supplementary be run by biomass or gas A 250 MW collector field may be used to operate a 200 MW turbine and 100,000 m 3 of drinking water may be produced a day (over 4 million liters per hour) through the process of water desalination Base load capability Reflects current status, however DII remains open to new technologies! SEITE 6
Only about 500 MW of CSP operational, but many projects under development SEITE 7
Transmission: Long-distance power transmission only viable with HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) High-voltage direct current (HVDC) Losses add up to a maximum of 3% every 1,000 km of transmission Existing experience with HVDC grids up to 3 5 GW capacity (Siemens, ABB) The DLR has estimated that the costs of producing and transporting solar-thermal power between will be lower than that of the conventional power production technologies in Europe due to constantly rising fuel prices and environmental costs Reflects current status, however DII remains open to new technologies! SEITE 8
Long-distance HVDC has been successfully demonstrated in several situations Technical feasibility of long-distance power transmission HVDC transmission China HVDC transmission Congo Connecting EUMENA 1700 km 1400 km 1700 km HVDC has only ~3% transmission losses per 1,000 km >90 % of the world s population living less than 3,000 km away from deserts SEITE 9
The key technologies for dii are Solar (CSP, PV) and Wind in generation and HVDC for transmission Relevant technologies to be applied for Desertec CSP PV Wind power HVDC ~680 MW 1) ~20 GW ~158 GW ~100 GW Concentration of sunlight to generate heat / steam Steam drives turbine and generates power 2) Direct conversion of sunlight into electric energy Can be applied with tracking system Conversion of wind to electricity by wind turbines Applicable on- and offshore Power transmission over large distances Selected reinforcement of existing transmission grids 1) With around 2 GW currently in installation 2) No steam turbine use for Stirling dish XX = worldwide installed capacity (status 2009) SEITE 10
Desertec The Desertec concept Objectives and status of dii Role and contribution of RWE SEITE 11
The kick-off for the Desertec Industrial Initiative took place in Munich on July 13, 2009 with high media coverage SEITE 12
Currently, 18 Shareholders and 32 Associated Partners belong to Dii GmbH Dii GmbH: Shareholders and Associated Partners 18 Shareholders 32 Associated Partners Terna and others Pay one-time stake and annual sponsoring fee Have equal voting rights in Dii GmbH shareholder meetings Participate in Dii working groups and annual Dii conference Pay annual fee (do not have voting rights) Are kept up to date about all relevant developments of the project Can apply to participate in Dii working groups Are invited to the annual Dii conference SEITE 13
The mission of the dii is to create the conditions for the realisation of the Desertec concept until the end of 2012 Dii roadmap Concept phase Creating conditions Projects phase Deliverables Detailed description of the concept Technical feasibility studies Create a favorable regulatory environment Propose and specify concrete reference projects Project realization and investments by partners and parties in the market Develop a long term rollout plan until 2050 Perform additional studies as needed (e.g. grid concept) Key players NGOs and Research Institutes (DLR, CoR, DESERTEC Foundation) BMU, BMWi External stakeholders EC, EU/MENA governments, other industrial initiatives Shareholders and partners Project developers Technology providers Investors SEITE 14
Four main objectives for Dii until 2012 SEITE 15
According to the DLR concept 15% of the EU-electricity demand in 2050 shall be covered by imports from the MENA region SEITE 16
CSP shall play an even bigger role in the MENA-region itself SEITE 17
Dii faces three major challenges Major challenges for Dii in EUMENA 1. Stimulation Bridge the gap between costs of renewables and market prices until grid parity is achieved 2. Markets/Grids Power grids and markets to facilitate connection of major power sources and demand areas in EUMENA Optimal split between local and EU consumption to be determined 3. Investment conditions MENA countries to establish favorable conditions for large scale investments SEITE 18
Desertec The Desertec concept Objectives and status of dii Role and contribution of RWE SEITE 19
RWE is a founding and active member of the Desertec Industrial Initiative > RWE is one of the 13 partners, who founded dii on Oct. 30, 2009 > RWE-representation in the dii Shareholder Committee by RWE AG and RWE Innogy > Active participation in several working groups: strategy, regulatory, technical etc. > Overall more than 20 RWE-personnel (part-time) involved in the project, esp. RWE AG, Innogy (Renwables), RWN (Grid), Dea (North Africa) SEITE 20
RWEs participation in the 50 MW Andasol III plant in Spain demonstrates our commitment for the development of CSP SEITE 21
