2 July 23 San Francisco About HRET and the TRUST Award The Health Research & Educational Trust is an independent, nonprofit organization engaging in timely research and education on topics of critical interest to hospitals and health care systems and the communities they serve. Since 1944 HRET, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, has developed and implemented an agenda of applied research, education and training programs to move the hospital and health care field toward improving the health of the U.S. population. HRET regularly works with academic, research, policy and community organizations to fulfill its mission of transforming health care through research and education. HRET established the TRUST Award in 2003 to recognize individuals who have demonstrated long-standing leadership in improving health care quality and building continued trust within America s health care organizations and communities. 3 2015 Honoree Stephen M. Shortell, PhD, MPH, MBA Stephen M. Shortell, PhD, MPH, MBA, is the Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management and Professor of Organization Behavior at the School of Public Health and Haas School of Business at University of California-Berkeley, where he also directs the Center for Healthcare Organizational and Innovation Research. From 2002 to 2013, he served as dean of the School of Public Health. He also holds appointments in the Department of Sociology at UC-Berkeley and the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Research, UC-San Francisco. Dr. Shortell received his undergraduate degree from University of Notre Dame, his master s degree in public health from UCLA, and his doctorate in behavioral sciences from University of Chicago. During , he was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. A leading health care scholar, Dr. Shortell and his colleagues have received numerous awards for their research examining the performance of integrated delivery systems; the organizational factors associated with quality and outcomes of care; the development of effective hospital-physician relationships; and the factors associated with the adoption of evidence-based processes for treating patients with chronic illness. He was the originator of the National Survey of Physician Organizations, which over the past decade and more has provided important information on physician practices and their adoption of evidence-based care management processes. He is currently conducting research on changes in physician practices overtime; on evaluation of accountable care organizations; and on ACO involvement in patient activation and engagement activities. Dr. Shortell is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences; past president of AcademyHealth and past editor of Health Services Research. He serves on many advisory boards and committees interested in improving the performance of health care systems. He is currently working on the implementation of health care reform in California and is chair of the Berkeley Forum for Improving California s Healthcare System.
