1 The Association of Women Accountants of Kenya (AWAK) is a non-political and non-profit making professional women s organization established in Membership is made up of lady accountants that have obtained full CPA qualifications. Since inception, over 200 members have registered. Vision AWAK s vision is to be a globally recognized women accountants' organization. Mission AWAK mission is: Building capacity among women accountants to enable them access opportunities. Objectives 1. To consider and promote all matters affecting the interest of the Accounting profession; 2. To enhance participation of women in the affairs of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK); 3. Facilitate knowledge transfer, especially financial literacy, to women; 4. Encouraging women to enter the Accountancy Profession; 5. To organize seminars with a view to raising women s awareness; 6. To organize social functions with a view to enabling members of the Association, fellow members of ICPAK and other professionals to interact; 7. To liaise with other local and international organizations on matters of mutual interest. Core Values AWAK s operations are guided by the following Core Values 1. GOVERNANCE Management of the association is entrusted to a committee of twelve elected members. While the Board is charged with the responsibility of overseeing routine operations of the Association, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the supreme decision-making authority. We have a secretariat which undertakes routine activities of the association. ADMINISTRATION OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS The administration of the scholarship is one of the AWAK S social responsibilities and on is done in line with the existing scholarship selection criteria. Scholarship Selection Background. AWAK shall invite applications, select and award scholarships to bright and needy Kenyan students joining or already in form one (1) in any public secondary school in Kenya every year. of AWAK. According to the AWAK s Strategic Plan, there will be 5 beneficiaries per calendar year. Five percent of the annual scholarships allocation shall be reserved for students with disabilities and from marginalized and minority groups as per the Kenya constitution, Selection Process. Notices inviting applications for the scholarships shall be sent out through appropriate media channels as per the set criteria as stipulated below. Criteria for Selection The applicant must meet the following selection criteria: Must be a Kenyan boy or girl-gender parity applies. Must be a poor orphan or

3 Poor person (boy or girl) with a disability or a child from an extremely underprivileged family background. (v) Must have a documented record of good discipline as attested to by the Head teacher/management of the primary school last attended. (vi) Must have sat Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examination the previous year or its equivalent in a public or informal primary school and attained at least 70% of the maximum marks/points attainable or as agreed by the Board for the marginalized areas and disability. (vii) Kenya. Must be due to join Form 1 or already in form 1 in a public secondary school in (ii) The notices shall set out the number of scholarships available where tenable, the criteria for eligibility as above and the deadline by which the applications must be received and successful applicants/beneficiaries notified. (iii) Applications for the scholarships shall be invited immediately the KCPE results are announced, and responses received within two weeks. (iv) Application for the scholarships will be by the individual student filling the scholarship application data form with recommendation from the head teacher of his/her former primary school, their district/local administration representative or the religious leader of the applicant s faith and testimonials on neediness e.g. death certificates. (v) All applications received within the stipulated deadline shall be processed and eligible applicants short listed for interviews. (vi) The shortlisted applicants shall be notified of the interview dates and venue. (vii) Upon interviewing, the scholarship officer in charge shall give a report on the interviews and eligible names to the Management who shall forward the recommended names to the Committee. (Interview report shall include all successful applicants and pre-qualified applicants should the successful applicants have other sponsors). (viii) The relevant committee shall recommend and forward a provisional awards list to the members for approval. (ix) Successful applicants from the provisional awards list shall be called to verify the school and double sponsorship. Awardees on double sponsorship shall be replaced with the pre-qualified applicants after confirming that they have no other sponsor. The Final list generated shall be forwarded to the Board members for approval. (x) The final approval/decision on awards shall be made by the Members. (xi) Only successful applicants shall receive award letters together with a scholarship award form for completion by the secondary school principal. The latter will provide school

4 account details, approved official annual fees and levies, amount of fees paid by the beneficiary s parent/guardian/donor/government bursary/other agency/source at the point of the student s admission and the outstanding fees and levies. Keeping track of the beneficiaries progress The AWAK scholarship officers often visit schools to counsel the beneficiaries and check on their progress. Counselling of students is also done during such visits. Counselling is also done during holidays when the students and their guardians visit the AWAK Offices. ABOUT THE SCHOLASHIP PROGRAMME The AWAK scholarship scheme is an educational fund set up by the Foundation to assist bright but needy secondary school students in the public secondary schools in Kenya. The AWAK scholarship programme was started in 2000 and has to date assisted more than 4 Kenyan students pursue secondary school education. How AWAK is funding the foundation AWAK Foundation is in the process of setting up an endowment fund to ensure sustainability of the programme where scholarship funds from the Members and grants from well wishers will be channeled. What the scholarship covers The scholarship covers tuition and other statutory payments for the four years of secondary education. QUALIFICATION: Requirements for eligibility Applicants for the scholarship must meet the following requirements; Be a Kenyan citizen Must have sat for KCPE in the previous year Must obtain 70%of KCPE marks Be an orphan or from a family suffering extreme poverty Be of good discipline Be admitted in a public secondary school Demonstrate strong motivation to pursue secondary education. Never have received any other scholarship Have a recommendation letter from previous Primary school Head teacher Have a recommendation letter from area chief affirming financial need for education. Evidence of being an orphan or suffering from extreme poverty where applicable.

5 Priority is given to applicants from public primary schools Duration of the sponsorship In aggregate the scholarship lasts for a period of four (4) years from the year of the award or until the beneficiary ceases to be a student in a public secondary school. Poor performance and/or indiscipline by the student is sufficient grounds for the Foundation to discontinue the scholarship 2. How to Apply a) Application forms are available free of charge at AWAK Offices. They are also available at the reception desk at ICPAK. b) Applications shall be filled in and submitted together with attachments as stipulated above. 3.
