1 Name of Intervarsity National Maidens 2015 Name of Society Literary and debating Society College National University of Ireland Galway Application Please provide a brief description of the event. Include if this was a new event, if not how did it improve on last year. Did you face any challenges, What you were most proud off The event was an intervarsity debating competition for debaters that had been debating competitively at university level for under a year. National Maidens is not a new event as much as it s a traditionally event that the debating societies in Ireland all take turns in hosting. We improved on national maidens this year by being more inclusive of new university s that are just setting up as debating societies such as AIT. We also hosted the final of the competition in a hotel which was a very nice venue. We faced challenges in terms of funding as our society had just previously hosted another intervarsity that was the National Irish Law debates exactly a month before Maidens. This meant that we were left with less funding options for our intervarsity. So as a result we applied for sponsorship with the bank of Ireland and received it, and additionally on the Friday night social we got a bar to host us for free even giving us finger food. Despite all this we still managed to pull off a great competition that ran very smoothly over the two days with both of the social events after the two days of the competition being very enjoyable. 1. Describe the competitive element and who the winners were. The competitive element was that this was a debating competition intervarsity. The format of the rounds of debating was that speakers competing would get the motion that they would be debating 15 minutes before their round of debating started. The rounds of debating work in three speakers on each side of a motion. Speeches were all 7 minutes in length and people spoke as individuals not part of teams, this is what makes National Maidens different to all other debating intervarsities in Ireland. Overall there were 5 rounds of debating held over two days, and these rounds were then followed by the top 12 speakers at the competition getting to the semi-final. Then the top three speakers in each of the tow semi-finals rounds went on to debate in the final in order to become winner and runner up. The final was held in the Galway bay hotel after everyone had received dinner. The overall winner of the competition was Matthew Collins a Trinity College Dublin first year from the competition and the runner up was Méabh Flanagan from the university college corks philosophical society. The judges in the completion were also competing in able to judge the final so the best judges were decided by the feedback they received. 1

2 2. How many were involved in the event Include number on the organising committee, how many attended from each college, additional attendees eg audience. Overall there were roughly 80 people in total involved in the competition. This included 13 volunteers and 77 speakers and judges.. Overall the people that partook in this event were people who had been debating for a year or less in at a college level. The judges in the competition were generally very experienced judges that were ineligible to speak In the competition as they had been speaking for more than a year at a college level. The were trinity college Dublin history society sent 8 speakers and 5 judges. Trinity college Dublin the philosophy society 8 speakers and 5 judges. University college Dublin literary and historical society sent 6 speakers and 6 judges. University College Cork philosophy society brought 5 speakers and 3 judges. University College Cork law society brought 3 speakers and 3 judges. University of Limerick sent 3 speakers and two judges. Athlone Institute of Technology sent 2 speakers and 1 judge. 3 How did you fare financially? What grant did you receive, how successful was your sponsorship/ fundraising. What was the entry fee and what did it include. What was your overall income and expenditure? We received a bank of Ireland sponsorship from bank of Ireland for 750. We received a funding grant for 200 from our college under the schedule of allowances for expenditure on events. We received special funding from the University Societies Coordination Group for 240 euro. The entry fee is 40 per speaker. So overall we received 2160 in registration fees for the competition. The entry fee was used to pay for tea during the competition dinner for the competitors on the Friday, breakfast on the Saturday along with Lunch and a ball at a hotel that evening following a dinner there in the evening. Overall income was 3200 overall expenditure was 3100 so overlay financial we fared pretty god. We made we made a profit in terms of running the competition overall. What this means is that we are both finically reliable we will also be able to put the money aside from our university back into the literary and debating society of nuig. We were able to ensure everyone had enough food for the two of the competition, even those with allergies or very restricted diets. And we were able to afford to hold the final in a hotel as we shopped around for the best prices. For our social on the Friday night of the competition we managed to get the Cellar bar to both reserve us seating area for free, but also to give our competitors free finger food. Overall even though we stuck very much to our budget for maidens, spending less money than we anticipated, when it came to running this competition we finically we fared very well. We were successful in gaining both sponsorship and some complimentary things from various venues such as finger food on the Saturday night from The Cellar Bar, and a punch and chocolate fondue reception from the Galway bay on our arrival there. 4 Please give details of the methods used to promote event? How successful were you at your PR and getting other colleges involved. Tips: It is important to detail variety of publicity methods used as well as the creativity and innovation of the publicity utilised. The publicity utilised was by ing all the other colleges with debating societies in Ireland. We created a new account for national maidens at nuig. Then We used it to other societies external conveners which are the people responsible for the intervarsity debating competitions debating society s take part in. We also created a Facebook page for national maidens called National maidens 2015 at nuig. Whenever a new bit of information was available about the competition we would post on it such as where the final would be held and what the timetable for the competition would be. We Invited all our Facebook friends 2

3 that were debaters from other university s to join this group in order to get more information about the event. Another thing we did to promote our competition was to Post it up on the Irish debating Facebook group also. This is a group for all people involved in college debating an enables us to see when other university are holding their own intervarsity s. 5 What would it mean to the society to win this award and why do you feel the society merits the award? For the society to win this award it would mean that we would have taken a national competition that gets passed around to all the active debating societies in the country and really made it our own. I feel our society merits this award especially as it was the second intervarsity held in the last two months. Both intervarsities s had multiple different colleges attend and hosting these events is an example of how much lit and deb in nuig cares about and is active in the debating circuit in Ireland. It also shows how organised we are and how we work well together as a committee. We also attend many other college intervarsity s for debating such as intervarsity s with Ireland such as Trinity college Dublin, University college Dublin., university college cork, On top of hosting 2 intervarsity s in two moths the literary and debating society also holds 3 society evens a week those being speaker development workshops on a Tuesday, tea and coffee hangouts on a Wednesday and then we host our main debates on Thursday every week.
