5 School of Nursing Mission The Kaplan School of Nursing programs prepare students to enter and advance in the nursing profession at many levels of practice, from basic to advanced, and enable graduates to develop and apply the knowledge, skills, and values gained from their education to serve effectively in whatever nursing roles and settings they choose. The Kaplan School of Nursing promotes nursing education focused on providing excellent care, serving as leaders, and being accountable and responsive to the ever-changing global health care climate. School of Nursing Philosophy The Kaplan School of Nursing programs are designed to enable individuals to combine nursing knowledge and values with skills and strategies that foster career success at all levels of nursing practice. Our faculty believes that our school s nursing programs will empower individuals to successfully meet the challenges of the health care communities they serve. Our programs are based on the belief that students grow through the application of liberal arts and nursing knowledge based on scientific principles and the development and use of critical-thinking skills. Our faculty believes nursing education requires a foundation in the physical sciences, social sciences, liberal arts, and nursing theory and research, as well as experiential learning. Nursing education should facilitate students in becoming capable of affirming themselves as whole beings physical, mental, and social and prepare them to respect and care for other persons. This education focuses on the preparation for nurses at different levels of practice, helping to increase the availability of nursing care for the growing population requiring health care in and across all settings. The nursing programs are also designed to prepare students to advance nursing contributions in the communities they serve and to participate in the growth of the profession. This model for nursing education emphasizes a foundation of understanding and ongoing learning, and guides students to pursue additional studies in nursing. Kaplan University s programs are designed to prepare graduates to pursue employment in their field of study, or in related fields. However, the University does not guarantee that graduates will be placed in any particular job, eligible for job advancement opportunities, or employed at all. Additional training or certification may be required. While many of Kaplan University s degree programs are designed to prepare graduates to pursue continued graduate- or doctoratelevel education, the University cannot guarantee that students will be granted admission to any graduate or doctoral programs

15 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING Program Overview The Master of Science in Nursing program is designed to build on previous nursing education and clinical experience and prepare students to pursue advanced practice in a variety of health care settings.* The program of study includes completion of the core curriculum, specialization courses, and an evidence-based project proposal. Students can select from five specializations for specific roles as an advanced practice nurse: nurse educator, nurse administrator, informatics, family nurse practitioner, or adult nurse practitioner. The nurse educator specialization is designed to prepare nurses to teach in schools of nursing and continuing education, staff development, clinical education, and patient and community education programs. Graduates may be prepared to sit for the National League for Nursing s Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) examination. The nurse administrator specialization is designed to prepare nurses to assume managerial positions and leadership roles in hospitals, community health, long-term care facilities, and other health care systems. Graduates may be prepared to sit for the Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive, Advanced Certification Examinations (depending on the level of leadership with an organization) provided by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The informatics specialization is designed to prepare nurses to meet the clinical, educational, research, and administrative challenges associated with working in a technology-rich environment. This specialization focuses on content and the representation of data and information, and incorporates computer, information literacy, and management competencies. Graduates may be prepared to use technology and information systems to advance evidence-based research, and to pursue informatics leadership roles in health care, industry, and education settings. In addition, graduates may be eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Informatics Nursing certification exam. The adult and family nurse practitioner specializations are designed to educate health care professionals on the topics of how to best provide primary care as a member of an interdisciplinary team and improve the availability of evidenced-based, culturally-relevant health care in diverse communities. The curriculum is designed to help students develop skills to evaluate the health and wellness of individuals, families, and their communities. The nurse practitioner is expected to possess skills in diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic health conditions, to deliver primary and preventive care and participate in the development of appropriate policy and evidenced-based practice. * Kaplan University s programs are designed to prepare graduates to pursue employment in their field of study, or in related fields. However, the University does not guarantee that graduates will be placed in any particular job, eligible for job advancement opportunities, or employed at all. Additional training or certification may be required. The Master of Science in Nursing s adult nurse practitioner and family nurse practitioner specializations are only available in select states. Although certain programs at Kaplan University are designed to prepare students to take various certification or licensing exams, the University cannot guarantee the student will pass those exams. In some cases, field experience, additional coursework, and/or background checks may be necessary to be eligible to take or to successfully pass the exams. The online Master of Science in Nursing program with nurse educator, nurse administrator, and informatics specializations is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).The nurse practitioner specializations, which were initiated in January 2011, have not yet been reviewed for accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and are not accredited at this time. Please note that most states require nurses to be nationally certified in order to obtain licensure as a nurse practitioner. Students graduating from unaccredited programs are not eligible to sit for the national certification exams provided by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Students are responsible for determining whether they will be eligible for state Board of Nursing approval and certification as a nurse practitioner in their state
