3 MANS Quarterly 3 Presidential Minutes by Jessica Wagner UMSON BALTIMORE 14 Hello Maryland nursing students! My name is Jessica Wagner and I am your Maryland Association of Nursing Students (MANS) President. I am incredibly excited to be representing the state of Maryland in the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA). I was born and raised in Palm Beach, Florida. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Florida in 2011 and then went into the work force. Initially, I worked at a blood bank where I was tasked with donor education and scheduling. After a year, I decided to move back to my hometown and work at a dental office so that I could learn a little more about the insurance and billing side of the healthcare industry. It was during this time that I found out I was accepted into the University of Maryland School of Nursing s program in Baltimore. Elated beyond belief, I quickly got my ducks in a row, packed up my truck, and drove north. I moved to downtown Baltimore City in early 2013 and instantly began my involvement with NSNA by becoming a member of my school s student government. I eventually found my way to MANS and was appointed President s Advisor where I saw firsthand the influence that MANS has. Your current MANS Board of Directors has been working all summer to ensure we have an outstanding year. The website has been overhauled, the newsletter revamped, and a new public awareness campaign is in the making! Our main goal this year is to increase student awareness of MANS and NSNA. Both organizations provide endless opportunities for students to voice their opinions and put their ideas into action. They also provide a wonderful platform to launch a successful nursing career. I am living proof. Two years of classes and clinicals seemed daunting as I began my tenure at UMSON, but the time has disappeared before me. Within that brief amount of time, I have grown from being a member of my school s NSNA chapter to President of MANS and then on to become the Eastern Representative for the Council of State Presidents for NSNA. These positions have afforded me opportunities that others are unaware even exist: attending conventions, meeting nursing leaders, and having a platform to raise awareness for various issues. If nothing else, my mission this year is to remind nursing students that they have a voice that should be heard and that becoming involved in MANS is one way that they can ensure that happens. Keep an eye out for MANS board members at your school in the near future. Best of luck to all students for a terrific fall semester! We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the state convention on January 24, 2015! Sincerely, Jessica Wagner President Maryland Association of Nursing Students
4 Common Mistakes Nursing Students Make When Studying by Emily Odenwald UMSON BALTIMORE 14 If you go to the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, you probably have met Jennifer Hayes-Klosteridis at some point when you were preparing for an exam or learning how to tackle NCLEX questions. Jennifer is the Director of the Student Success Center at UMSON and she is an expert when it comes to study techniques for nursing students. I had the pleasure of interviewing her this past summer and, no matter where you go to school, her tips for new and continuing students are invaluable! In your opinion, what are some common errors that you see nursing students make in school related to studying techniques? The biggest mistake that I see nursing students make is studying slide to slide from lecture PowerPoints. This approach lends itself to lower-level learning and leads to rote memorization. Studying in nursing school needs to go up a level. Students need to understand the material and be able to apply this content both on tests and in a clinical setting. I encourage students to break their studying into three parts: preview (before class), review (shortly after class), and synthesis (actively work with information to pull the content together). What is the number one reason that a student gets a question wrong? Lack of knowledge? They didn't read the question? NCLEX style question tripped them up? One main reason a student may get a question wrong is ineffective studying. Students tend to over study what they know and under study what they don't know because they never self-test before an exam. Another reason is that students read too much into a question and don't use test strategies to attack the question. For students struggling with NCLEX style questions, how can they improve their accuracy with questions? Practice, practice, practice! Many students struggle with critical thinking on exams. How can students practice their critical thinking skills? Critical thinking comes out of being able to synthesize the information the student is learning in lecture and being able to explain key concepts to others. If you can teach it, you know it. MANS Quarterly 4
5 MANS Quarterly 5 Common Mistakes Nursing Students Make When Studying - Continued For students who are starting to prep for their NCLEX, what are some things they can do to ensure success? When should they start thinking about NCLEX prep? It is never too early to begin practicing NCLEX questions. There are tons of resources out there for students to begin practicing questions. It's like preparing for a race: you wouldn't start training the week before. A lot of nursing students have test taking anxiety. Any tips for how to control that so it doesn't impact performance? Some anxiety is actually good for learning, but immobilizing test anxiety is something a student should discuss with a professional. From an academic standpoint, good test preparation goes a long way toward easing anxiety. From a balance standpoint, sleep is essential to maintain optimal neurological functioning. Students often cram the night before an exam and sacrifice sleep. They would be better off going to sleep at a reasonable time. Your brain solidifies those neuronal connections made through studying during the sleep cycle. The MANS Board of Directors would like to sincerely thank Jennifer for her time and advice!
6 Monthly Community Health Updates by Sarah O Haver AACC 14 August is National Immunization Awareness Month! The ANA supports the Bringing Immunity to Every Community Initiative to promote immunizations in all age groups nationally. Nurses serve an important role in the effort to promote immunization and educate the public about preventable diseases. As the new school year begins and flu season approaches, do your part in preventing communicable diseases in your community and educate those around you about the importance of vaccinating! For more information and to take the Immunization Pledge, go to Resolutions Report by Harrison Jackson Towson University 15 At the most recent National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) Conference, the MANS Board of Directors submitted a resolution that was successfully adopted by the NSNA House of Delegates. A resolution is a written statement that can be submitted by any NSNA student or state/school board. If approved by the House of Delegates, resolutions become the basis of the NSNA policies. The NSNA defines resolutions as matters of importance to NSNA, its members and constituent associations, nursing, and the health needs of the public. Because resolutions are usually national in scope, they have the potential to have a significant impact. The resolution title submitted by the MANS Board of Directors read In Support of Decreasing Thirty-Day Hospital Readmission Rates Through the Implementation of Transitional Care Teams. The main argument for this resolution was that readmissions cost large amounts of money to the public, hospitals, and insurance companies. To quote the resolution, approximately 2.6 million seniors are readmitted within 30 days, at a cost of over $26 billion every year. Evidence suggests that many of these occurrences can be avoided using the multi-disciplinary approach of transitional care teams. Because this resolution was passed by the House of Delegates by a majority vote, the NSNA adopted it as part of its policy. The resolution will be sent to numerous nursing and health organizations such as the American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Heart Association, and many more.
