One of the most important aspects of residency in a limited residency program is that you are able to spend time with your faculty and peers, both inside and outside the classroom. Participating in meals and special events, such as guest speakers, field trips, technical trainings, and get-togethers is part of what makes this a rich learning community. During the first residency, new students will meet with the program director to plan their preliminary course of study. An on-campus orientation is required for incoming students and is scheduled the day prior to when residency classes start. To jump start the process an online orientation is also available to help students prepare for graduate school and how to be successful in distance learning. During each subsequent residency, students meet with their program director(s) to refine their course of study and to develop a plan for the capstone or thesis paper. The required capstone or thesis paper, completed off campus, is the culmination of each student s course of study and is described in more detail below. Students return to campus briefly in early August after completing all course requirements to participate in Commencement. Off-Campus Requirements Faculty maintain regular contact with students throughout the semester. Depending on the course, this may involve individual discussions by telephone or , online conferencing, live classes, or conference calls involving occasional guest speakers. Typically, regular communication between faculty and students will be weekly. Students are responsible for maintaining contact with instructors and with program administrators during the semester. is the preferred method of contact. Courses are designed to be completed during the 4-week Residency term (9 days on-campus, 3 weeks off-campus) or the 15-week online terms in the fall or spring. Students will be provided with a syllabus and schedule for each course. Off-campus communication will also include submitting assignments, papers, participating in discussions and other written work using the GoucherLearn platform. Students can expect an average of 7 to 10 hours per week in reading, writing, and research assignments per course. Online courses that include synchronous meeting sessions will usually be scheduled to take place on weekday evenings or on weekends. :: 2 ::
4 Admissions How to Apply To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit the following: A completed application form, including three copies of the essay and a nonrefundable $75 application fee made payable to Goucher College. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work, which can be sent directly by the institution to the address below or included with your application in the institution s sealed envelope. Two recommendation letters completed by people who know you well enough to give informed opinions of your intellectual ability, capacity for sustained self-directed study, personal qualifications, and professional potential. Applications are accepted throughout the year for two entry points: Fall (late July) and Spring (early January). Please see the website for program specific deadlines. Application materials can be downloaded from our website at goucher.edu/graduate-programs/how-to-apply. If you would prefer to receive a hard copy, please contact us by phone at or by ing center@goucher.edu. Application materials can be forwarded to: Admissions Welch Center for Graduate and Professional Studies Goucher College 1021 Dulaney Valley Road Baltimore, Maryland Acceptance to the program will be based on an evaluation of the applicant s experience and work, essay, recommendation letters, and transcripts. The essay is particularly important as it demonstrates the applicant s connection to the field, depth of experience, professional aims, ability to undertake selfdirected graduate study, and ability to present a cogent argument in writing. The Admissions Committees for each program are regularly assembled throughout the year to review applications. Accepted students are required to submit an enrollment agreement, along with a nonrefundable $500 deposit. The deposit will be credited toward tuition charges for the upcoming semester. Because of Department of Education regulations, Goucher has temporarily put a hold on admissions in a few states. For current information, please visit Goucher s website at goucher.edu/doe. Fees & Expenses Program Costs For the 2015 entering class, tuition is $825 per credit hour. Students pay a $350 Residency Fee that covers the cost of lunches and dinners, fieldtrips, guest speakers, and other materials and special events hosted during residency. During the fall residency students are encouraged to stay in oncampus housing. The fee ranges from $45-$90 per night based on occupancy and amenities. There is a $125 technology fee each semester. Modest annual increases in tuition and fees should be expected. A $125 fee per credit is assessed for transfer credits accepted from other institutions. Official extension fees are $140 per credit for a 1-5 week extension, $400 per credit for a semester extension. Financial Aid Students may apply for a Federal Direct Stafford and/or a Direct Graduate PLUS Loan. Eligibility for federal direct loans is based on need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students receiving these loans are required to take a minimum of 4.5 credits per semester. To determine eligibility for these loans, please complete the FAFSA at Some applicants will be required to submit additional information. We encourage all students to use the Financial Aid Student Tracking System (FASTS) to learn the status of their financial aid file. For more information, visit goucher.edu/gradaid. Goucher College is authorized to provide for the education of qualified veterans and, when eligible, the spouses and children of deceased or disabled veterans under the provision of the various federal laws pertaining to veterans educational benefits. Students eligible for veterans benefits must apply for admission, pay their bills, and register in the same manner as nonveteran students. Reimbursement is made by the Department of Veterans Affairs. To receive benefits, students must qualify for benefits and must comply with the rules that have been established by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the policies currently in effect at Goucher. Further information and enrollment forms may be obtained from Goucher s Office of Student :: 3 :: :: 4 ::
5 Administrative Services at Students should also check with their employers regarding possible financial assistance. Please note that the cost of on-campus residency housing is not covered by financial aid and that international students are not eligible for financial aid. The fall semester includes both the fall residency courses and the fall online courses. The spring semester includes both the spring residency courses and the spring online courses. A limited number of scholarships are available. Please visit the program webpages for more information on scholarships. Requests for scholarship consideration should be made at the time of application. A monthly payment plan is available from Academic Management Services (AMS) at , which may be helpful for students who do not qualify for or do not wish to take advantage of the federal loan program. Payments may be made by check, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. A partial refund of payments may be made to students who withdraw from courses of their own accord. Any credit balance remaining after these adjustments to the student s account will be refunded. Institutional and federal aid, as well as tuition and fees will be adjusted in accordance with the Federal Return of Title IV calculation. The Title IV calculation is based on the days of attendance as a percentage of total days in the semester up until 60 percent. For example, if a student drops a class after completing 20 percent of the semester, the student would be eligible for a refund of all but 20 percent of the tuition (or an 80 percent refund). After 60 percent of the semester has been completed, no refunds are awarded.
