2 MA by Research in History The MA by Research in History offers you the structure and focus to research a historical topic in depth, supervised by experts in your field of study. You will develop your research skills through a flexible programme of generic and history-specific training workshops, combined with regular meetings with your supervision team. Within the first three months of the programme, you undertake a formal assessment that provides you with the feedback and support to plan your dissertation to successful completion. Structure of the programme: Students taking the MA by Research in History will: Write a 5000 word draft chapter and research plan, assessed formally within three months of enrolment Write a dissertation of up to 25,000 words on original historical research Attend the University of Hertfordshire general training sessions on research methods
3 The dissertation of up to 25,000 words is defended in oral examination led by an external examiner. Further opportunities and support: Students taking the MA by Research can benefit from a wide range of opportunities for further training and guidance at: a programme of History postgraduate training workshops specialised training sessions and seminars at the Institute of Historical Research the History annual staff-student residential research weekend at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Great Park A regular programme of workshops, seminars and field trips run by the History Lab postgraduate society
4 Our expertise The History group at the University of Hertfordshire is internationally renowned for its cutting-edge research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), we were rated joint 5th alongside King s College London, and the top unit in the UK for the impact of our research (100% world-leading ). We achieve large-scale funding grants from bodies including the European Union, Economic and Social Research Council and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. For example, we are one of the five major AHRC-funded First World War engagement centres ( Our research specialisms include, but are not limited to: Histories of welfare, medicine, witchcraft and crime in England from the early modern era to the nineteenth century 20th century society and politics, especially propaganda and media in mid-century Britain, America, Italy and Ireland Digital history as one of the originators of the Old Bailey Online project, we are now expanding our research into further cutting-edge fields of digital history, including Big Data Local and regional history, under the Centre for Local and Regional History Research ( which provides support for academic research and the Heritage Hub ( which connects our research with local community history groups Public history, business heritage and financial history If you have a good idea for a research project that does not initially seem to fit these interests, do not hesitate to get in touch: we supervise a wide range of topics.
5 Start dates and entry requirements Start Dates and modes of study There are two enrolment dates September and January. You can study for one year full-time (with optional extension of 6 months) or two years part-time. Entry Requirements You will need to have a first or a good 2:1 class honours or equivalent in your first degree. If you are a non-uk citizen, you will need to have an English Language qualification of IELTS 6.5 or TOFEL 580/92. We require two academic references, an application form and a research proposal of up to two pages, outlining the planned project and an indicative bibliography of primary and secondary sources.
6 Location The School of Humanities is located on the De Havilland Campus, Hatfield. The University is convenient for major research libraries and activities in central London (25 minutes by train) and Cambridge. We have an extensive network of partnerships with regional history groups, heritage organisations and archive repositories in and around Hertfordshire. Application and fees information In order to prepare for this programme, applicants should supply a proposal of up to two pages outlining their research project, main primary sources and indicative bibliography.
