3 Understanding Fundamentals Defining the protection types: unprotected, deterministic, and mesh protection Unprotected circuit This means that data traveling from location A to location Z has only a single defined path and incase of a cable failure there is no second route for the data to reach its destination. Deterministic protection This means that there are two clearly defined paths or cable routes for the data to reach from location A to location Z. In case of a cable failure on one path the data gets rerouted and reaches the destination through the second defined path. Mesh protection This means that there are multiple routes available from location A to location Z and the data can travel on any of these routes to reach its destination. In case of a failure on one of the routes the data will be re-routed automatically to one of the other available routes. Defining CIR CIR is Committed Information Rate. This means that the customer gets the exact committed bandwidth on our network. For example, if the customer buys 10 Meg of bandwidth, we will reserve 10 Meg of bandwidth for the customer on our network. 3
4 Ethernet Service Types as Defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) E-Line- Any Ethernet service that is based on a point-to-point Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) is designated as an Ethernet Line (E-Line) Service type. An E-Line service type can be used to create a broad range of point-to-point services. EPL- An Ethernet Private Line (EPL) service is specified using an E-Line service type. An EPL service uses a point-to-point EVC between two UNIs and provides a high degree of transparency for service frames between the UNIs it interconnects such that the service frame s header and payload are identical at both the source and destination UNI when a service frame is delivered. EVPL- An Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) is created using an E-Line service type. An EVPL can be used to create services similar to the Ethernet Private Line (EPL) with some notable exceptions. First, an EVPL allows for service multiplexing at the UNI. This capability allows more than one EVC to be supported at the UNI where the EPL does not allow this. Second, an EVPL need not provide as much transparency of service frames as with an EPL. Because service multiplexing is permitted, some service frames may be sent to one EVC while other service frames may be sent to other EVCs. E-LAN- Any Ethernet Service that is based upon a multipoint-to-multipoint EVC is designated as an Ethernet LAN (E-LAN) service type. EP-LAN- Subscribers with multiple sites often want to interconnect them at high speeds so all sites appear to be on the same Local Area Network (LAN) and have equivalent performance and access to resources such as servers and storage. Subscribers commonly desire a highly transparent service that connects multiple UNIs. To this end, the Ethernet Private LAN (EP- LAN) service is defined in this subsection, using the E-LAN service type. EVP-LAN- Some subscribers commonly desire an E-LAN service type to connect their UNIs in a metro network, while at the same time accessing other services from one or more of those UNIs. An example of such a UNI is a subscriber site that wants to access a public or private IP service from a UNI that is also used for E-LAN service among the subscriber s several metro locations. It is defined as the Ethernet Virtual Private LAN (EVP-LAN) service in this subsection to address this need. E-Tree- Any Ethernet Service that is based on a rooted-multipoint-to-multipoint EVC is designated as an Ethernet Tree (E-LAN) service type. EP-Tree- Subscribers with multiple sites may want to interconnect them to provide services other than those that resemble a LAN. These services may be distributed from a centralized site (or few such sites) where the distribution site is designated as a Root and all the remaining sites are designated as leaves. EVP-Tree- Subscribers desire access to certain applications or content services from welldefined access points within their own (or an external) network. In this case it is necessary to interconnect the participating UNIs in a rooted-multipoint connection to the well-defined access (or root) point. One or more of the subscriber s UNIs may also support other services, e.g., EVPL or EVP-LAN. For such cases, the EVP-Tree service is used. 4
5 What are MEF Certifications? Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) is a global industry alliance comprising more than 195 organizations including telecommunications service providers, cable MSOs, network equipment/software manufacturers, semiconductors vendors and testing organizations. The MEF develops Carrier Ethernet technical specifications and implementation agreements to promote interoperability and deployment of Carrier Ethernet worldwide. MEF certifications are verified through independent testing and assure customers that our global Ethernet services meet rigorous international standards. MEF 14 ensures that the latency, jitter and packet delivery performance of the services conforms to the rigorous MEF standards. MEF 9 ensures the conditions required for delivery of services have specific Ethernet User Network Interface (UNI) and Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) service attributes, with corresponding parameter values. MEF 14 and 9 certifications apply to our Global Dedicated Ethernet Service, National Dedicated Ethernet Services, EoSecure, Priority Ethernet Service, Multipoint Ethernet Service, Low Latency Global Dedicated Ethernet and Low Latency Multipoint Ethernet. Visit to learn more about MEF. What is a MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional (MEF-CECP)? The MEF-CECP, is the MEF professional certification program designed for telecommunications professionals seeking to validate their expertise, skills and knowledge of Carrier Ethernet technologies, standards, services and applications. Certification is awarded to individuals who successfully pass MEF administered tests developed by distinguished leaders and experts in the Carrier Ethernet industry. MEF authorized training partners, global leaders in telecommunication classroom based training, education and consulting, offer Carrier Ethernet training courses to prepare individuals for exams. The MEF certification is a globally recognized and trusted reference for Carrier Ethernet professionals employed with global service providers, equipment vendors, enterprises and governments. It ensures that Carrier Ethernet professionals acquire key competency and skills to design, manage or implement Carrier Ethernet networks, services and applications. has CECP certified professionals on their Product Management teams, Sales Engineering teams and Operations teams. Tata has an active program to provide top performers CECP training. 5
