UNIVERSITY APPLICATION: Apply t San Francisc State University s Graduate Divisin ( , ADM 250), using the Graduate/Pst-baccalaureate applicatin t The Califrnia State University. There may be additinal admissin requirements fr admissin, such as the Test f English as a Freign Language (TOEFL). CREDENTIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION 1. CREDENTIAL PROGRAM APPLICATION: Cmplete the Single Subject Credential Prgram Applicatin. 2. PROCESSING FEE: There is a $25.00 nn-refundable fee fr this applicatin. This can be paid at the Bursar s Office prir t submitting the prgram applicatin. The Bursar will stamp the payment slip included in the prgram applicatin. If yu cannt pay in persn, a check r mney rder payable t SFSU can be attached t the filled ut fee slip. 3. TRANSCRIPTS: Submit ne fficial set f sealed transcripts frm every cllege r university attended. This is in additin t transcripts fr the CSU Graduate applicatin. Yu shuld cllect all fficial transcripts and submit them with the applicatin. SFSU transcripts can be unfficial cpies frm MySFSU. Freign transcripts must be evaluated by a state apprved agency. DEGREE: Applicants must have earned a bachelr s degree r higher, except in prfessinal educatin (i.e., secndary educatin), frm a reginally accredited cllege r university. Applicants with degrees frm utside the United States must have the equivalent f a bachelr s degree frm a US reginally accredited institutin. The degree must be awarded befre enrlling in the credential prgram. If the degree is nt awarded at the time f the applicatin deadline, applicants must prvide transcripts at the time f applicatin and updated transcripts nce the degree has been awarded. 5. GPA: Applicants fr admissin shuld have attained a grade pint average f at least 2.67 in all baccalaureate and pst baccalaureate cursewrk r a grade pint average f at least 2.75 in the last 60 semester units r 90 quarter units. 6. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Submit a typed essay (1-3 pages duble spaced). Sme questins t cnsider when frmulating yur essay: Why d yu want t be a teacher? What experiences have prepared yu t teach in a linguistically diverse, urban setting? What persnal qualities d yu pssess and what experiences have yu had that have prepared yu t wrk in a cllabrative envirnment such as a high schl r a chrt in the Single Subject Prgram? 7. EARLY FIELD EXPERIENCE: Applicants must demnstrate that they have fulfilled a minimum requirement f 45 hurs f Early Field Experience prir t applying t the Single Subject Credential Prgram. This Early Field Experience requirement can be met by vlunteering, substitute teaching, r wrking in a Single Subject, regular educatin classrm in a Califrnia public schl, in an apprpriate subject area. The classrm shuld be culturally and linguistically diverse, meaning that at least ne third f the students are English Language Learners. This includes Ebnics speakers. The intentin is fr applicants t gain sme expsure t and familiarity with the rle f the teacher, the student age grup, the current curriculum standards, and the public schl envirnment. The experience shuld be within the last 5 years. Experiences in private schls, pre-schls, special educatin, higher educatin, religius educatin, after schl prgrams r utside the U.S. will nt meet this requirement. A letter f recmmendatin frm the teacher r supervising site administratr must verify this experience. The letter shuld briefly describe the classrm cmpsitin, including the cultural backgrund f the students, and the classrm envirnment, including grade level and subject(s) taught. The letter shuld als state hw the applicant was invlved in the classrm, including qualitative cmments abut the applicant s perfrmance in the classrm, especially nting the applicant s effectiveness in a linguistically and culturally diverse classrm. 3 8. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: A minimum f three (3) letters is required. The Early Field Experience letter can cunt as ne f the three letters. Letters shuld address the applicant s character, aptitude fr teaching, wrk ethic, r academic ability, et cetera. Additinal letters will als be accepted t augment the applicatin. Letters must be n letterhead and have riginal signatures. Letters frm relatives and letters mre than five years ld will nt be accepted. Applicants shuld cllect all letters and include them in the applicaint paket. 9. SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENCY: The Credential Prgram des nt prvide further preparatin in a subject area. Knwledge f the subject shuld be mastered befre beginning a credential prgram. There are tw ways applicants can prve their cmpetency: Pass the required CSET exams. All parts f the exam fr yur subject must be taken befre the applicatin deadline. Thse with nly partial passing scres will nt be admitted. Phtcpies f all exam scres shuld be included with the Prgram Applicatin, even if yu have requested the scres sent t SFSU by the testing cmpany. Exams vary by subject. Fr infrmatin and registratin g t: All CSET scres are valid fr five years. Yu must earn yur credential befre these tests expire. OR Cmplete an Apprved Subject Matter Cmpetency Prgram. T have yur cursewrk assessed, please cnsult the list f Subject Matter Cmpetency Advisrs n Page 14 and make an appintment. The frm the advisr needs t cmplete is n Page 15. Yu must cmplete 100% f subject matter cmpetency cursewrk at a Califrnia State University (CSU) campus t be admitted and begin the credential prgram. Per CSU Executive Order 1077 under Sectin III, a cmparisn and analysis f student transcripts frm a nn-csu, nn CTC-apprved subject matter prgram shall nt satisfy the CSU requirement fr certifying subject matter cmpetence. NOTE We will accept unfficial printuts f grades t verify cmpletin f the Subject Matter Prgram fr admissin purpses nly. Yu MUST submit an fficial transcript (SFSU excepted) t be recmmended fr a credential. If yu have cmpleted a subject matter cmpetency prgram at anther CSU campus, we must have an fficial, riginal frm r letter with a Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing-apprved signature verifying that yu have met all subject matter prgram requirements in a prgram apprved by the CTC. Fr example, an individual may pass the Mathematics EAP and the EPT examinatin t satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement. 3

4 11. SECOND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: Shw verificatin f experience learning a secnd language. See Page 7 fr fulfillment ptins. 12. CERTIFICATE OF CLEARANCE: In accrdance with Califrnia state law and Educatin cde, all teaching credential applicants must g thrugh a backgrund check. All applicants must apply fr a Certificate f Clearance with the Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing (CTC) OR submit prf f prir cmpletin f the clearance. Acceptable dcumentatin in lieu f a Certificate f Clearance: Valid credentials r permits issued by the CTC, including substitute, pre-intern permits, shrt term staff permits, clear r preliminary, r Child Develpment permits. TB TEST: (interns are exempt frm this requirement) TB test verificatin shuld be a phtcpy f a nte r card frm a dctr. A negative skin test r a clear chest x-ray is acceptable. Verificatin shuld be valid at least six mnths at prgram start date. The term f validity is fr a negative skin test is ne year and five years fr the clear chest x-ray. ADDITIONAL CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS These can be cmpleted after admissin, befre earning yu credential. Cmpletin f U. S. Cnstitutin curse r exam. Yu must meet the U.S. Cnstitutin requirement either by curse wrk r examinatin. Thse wh earned a B.A. frm a CSU campus have already met this requirement. Check with the Teacher Preparatin Center t see if yu have met this requirement. Yu must have current training in administering CPR t adults, children and infants at the time f applicatin t the Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing. Perfrmance Assessment fr Califrnia Teachers (PACT). All Single Subject credential candidates are required t pass the Perfrmance Assessment fr Califrnia Teachers knwn as the PACT. SFSU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CREDENTIAL PROGRAM FILE USE AND STORAGE POLICY All materials submitted t San Francisc State University (SFSU) becme the prperty f SFSU and will nt be returned. THE SB 2042 CREDENTIAL AND CLAD The Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing (CTC) gverns teacher certificatin under the authrity granted t it by the Califrnia State Legislature in Senate Bill SB 2042 includes stipulatins under Assembly Bill 1059, which authrizes yu t teach English Language Learners r what was previusly designated CLAD classrms. This means that yu will NOT have t cmplete a separate (r an additinal) CLAD prgram nr take the CTEL exams. 4

7 INTERN PROGRAM The Intern Prgram is a fur-semester prgram beginning nly in the Fall semester. All participants must be emplyed at least part-time as the teacher f recrd in their subject area and meet all internship credential requirements. SECOND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT Candidates must shw verificatin f experience learning a single secnd language btained thrugh ne f the ptins described belw: A. Cmpletin f 1-6 semester units (r 1-9 quarter units) in curse wrk that emphasizes the learning f a language ther than English (including American Sign Language). A grade f "C" r better, "Pass," r "Credit," must be earned in each curse, verified by an fficial transcript frm a reginally accredited cllege r university, r cmparable institutin utside the United States. Prfessinal develpment and cntinuing educatin units frm such institutins are acceptable. B. Successful cmpletin f tw years f curse wrk in a language ther than English in grades seven (7) thrugh twelve (12) in a public r private secndary schl with an average grade f C r better, verified by an fficial transcript r a letter frm the schl.
