Core Research Groups Radiochemistry (BNFL University Research Alliance) Materials Performance (BNFL University Research Alliance) Nuclear Physics Fusion
Radiochemistry Centre for Radiochemistry Research undertakes research in all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, including fundamental research relevant to process chemistry, waste management and reducing environmental impact Current research themes include: Radioelement coordination chemistry Environmental radioelement chemistry Spectroscopy of radioelements Involves over 30 people including 4 full time academic staff. Newly refurbished radiochemistry labs were opened in 2001 and include specialist hot labs with spectroscopic and analytical equipment for radioactive samples
Materials Performance Materials Performance Centre is an interdisciplinary centre for training and research in nuclear materials science and engineering Current research themes include: Corrosion & environmentally assisted cracking Structural integrity Graphite behaviour Cladding materials (Zirconium) Modelling Core team of 5 academic staff supported by 19 research students Extensive facilities and world-class materials characterisation facilities including X-ray diffraction and an extensive suite of scanning and transmission electron microscopes
Nuclear Physics Nuclear Physics Group research is focused on aspects of nuclear structure found in short-lived nuclei. A major part of the research programme involves techniques of gamma-ray spectroscopy and laser spectroscopy Current research themes include: Nuclear spectroscopy of nuclei with low production rates Laser spectroscopy of radioactive isotopes Fission-fragment spectroscopy Properties of isomers 7 academics, 6 technical support staff and RAs, and 13 students work full time on the programmes. Involves the use of overseas facilities including large gamma-ray detector arrays such as EUROBALL and EXOGAM (Europe), and GAMMASPHERE (USA). The group also has strong connections with the cyclotron laboratory in Jyväskylä in Finland, and ISOLDE at CERN.
Fusion Research into magnetically confined plasmas for controlled nuclear fusion, particularly the issue of particle and power handling at the edge of such plasmas. Research particularly focused on understanding the physics of "detached" plasma operation. Experiments are carried out both in Manchester and on the MAST and JET tokamaks at Culham Science Centre, England
: Current plans New Professorial appointment underway in Decommissioning Engineering New Professorial appointment underway in Radiation Science. New electron LINAC for radiation research. Planning for a new research group and a Reactor Technology Centre
Dalton s proposed Reactor Technology Centre (Assumes access to overseas research reactors) UK strategic skills for KNOO plus Gen IV: Thermal Hydraulics Radiation science & materials performance Water Chemistry Waste management & decommissioning Safety Assessment Radiometrics Criticality / shielding Core design, physics and fuel performance Fuel cycle research Dalton has visited the key US universities at MIT, PSU and Michigan to benchmark against their reactor expertise.
NEW FACILITIES Collaboration with the UK s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) & Nexia Solutions on a 20m Dalton investment in a major new teaching and research base close to Sellafield. The aim is to utilise the Sellafield Technology Centre opposite akin to a teaching hospital model An MoU between the NDA and the Univ. of Manchester is being prepared. Sellafield Technology Centre Owned by the NDA. 250m state-ofthe-art nuclear laboratory containing research cells; plutonium labs and other radioactive and non-radioactive labs; remote-handling equipment.
Development of International Research Links The Dalton team is visiting to the following to establish research and training linkages: Idaho National Laboratory. Host for Centre of Advanced Energy Studies. INL will become the premier facility for nuclear energy research and the next generation of reactors. South Africa. UK joined the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project (via BNFL) in 2000 with 50m investment. Demonstration plant by 2010 with handover to Eskom in Student exchanges for training and research agreed with North- West University (Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Engineering). Tsinghua University, China. Visit planned in 2006 with Dean of Faculty of Eng. & Physical Sciences Intend to link with France, Japan.
