2 The School of Physics and Astronomy houses a unique mix of world-leading research groups and teaching experts. In the most recent independent review of research quality (RAE 2008), Physics at Glasgow was rated in the UK s top ten. We are a member of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance, which brings together internationally leading physics research across Scotland to form the largest physics grouping in the UK. If you study with us you can benefit from the state-of-the-art facilities and access to world-leading research: The School of Physics and Astronomy plays a world-leading role in the exploitation of data from the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest particle accelerator at CERN, and is highly active in the design and development of future accelerator projects. The School of Physics and Astronomy hosts the Kelvin Nanocharacterisation Centre, which houses state-of-the-art instrumentation for studying materials at the nanoscale or below. The School of Physics and Astronomy plays a world-leading role in the design and operation of the worldwide network of laser interferometers leading the search for gravitational waves; and also has a major role in the award winning NASA RHESSI X-ray mission studying solar flares and in several other forthcoming international space missions such as ESA's Solar Orbiter. The School of Physics and Astronomy is highly active in research and knowledge transfer projects with industry. As a student, you will have regular opportunities to engage with our industrial collaborators through informal visits, guest lectures and workshops. Furthermore you will gain the theoretical, experimental and computational skills necessary to analyse and solve a range of advanced physics problems, providing an excellent foundation for a career of scientific leadership in academia or industry. The School offers a vibrant, dynamic and supportive environment for both staff and students. Several of our one-year MSc programmes are linked to the interdisciplinary themes identified as major research challenges for the 21st century. The vast majority of the lecturers I had were all very good in that they were friendly and had well presented notes/lecture slides. 7 For all Physics and Astronomy Programmes You will have the flexibility to tailor your choice of optional courses and project work to a variety of specific research topics and their applications in the area of your chosen field. You will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and take part in lab, project and team work. I love Physics. I love the University of Glasgow and what I have achieved there.
