2 1 Introduction To meet society s current challenges in the important areas of energy, medicine, environment, construction and transportation, the discovery and development of functional materials is imperative. For further advancement in these key areas, it is necessary that interdisciplinary approaches, leading to synergy effects, involving researchers from different natural science and technological backgrounds, are initiated and carried out. Interdisciplinary studies are increasing in scope and will continue increase. The discovery and development of innovative and competitive high-technology products depends on the use of a very wide range of modern materials, as well as their cost effective production. It is also clear that sustainability strategies and environmentally friendly policies must be considered and implemented. The interdisciplinary post-graduate program Chemistry and Physics of Materials at the University of Salzburg offers an English language curriculum that is open to students from all countries and different scientific backgrounds. Successful completion of the program requirements results in a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Chemistry and Physics of Materials. The focus of study concerns the synthesis, characterization (both material and functional related) and knowledge-based development of functional materials from both the laboratory and nature. It is the chemical and physical, and in many cases, biological factors, that ultimately determine material properties and stabilities, as well as their environmental compatibility. All of these subject areas are part of this integrated M.Sc. study program. The Master of Science program Chemistry and Physics of Materials is designed to deepen the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Ingenieurwissenschaften at the University of Salzburg, which is related to the study of the synthesis, development and technological application of various materials. The Master of Science program provides for an understanding of current methods, related to the characterization of a large selection of materials and familiarizes the student to a broad spectrum of possible technological applications. In addition to the focus on the functionality and stability of various materials, an awareness of material cycles, environmental strategies of sustainability and biological compatibility are also considered in the selection and processing of both finished and raw materials. (1) The Master of Science program Chemistry and Physics of Materials is an English-based curriculum at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS). It is research-orientated and is three semesters in length. It directly builds upon and follows the seven semester B.Sc. program Ingenieurwissenschaften (Engineering Science). The latter is a joint international cooperation between the University of Salzburg and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany. The successful completion of the M.Sc. program requires the acquisition of 90 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) points; the individual number depends on the course program chosen for study. 2

3 (2) The entrance requirements to the M.Sc. program Chemistry and Physics of Materials are: I) a B.Sc. degree Ingenieurwissenschaften from PLUS-TUM. or II) a B.Sc. degree in related field or equivalent study at a certified post-high school educational institution in Austria or in a foreign country. The field of study should be in any of the natural sciences or engineering fields (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Nanoscience, Materials Science, Mineralogy, Chemical Engineering, etc.). Study can begin in either the Winter (starting in October) or Summer semester (starting in March). If the full equivalence of the joint B.Sc. degree in I), with its requirement of 210 ECTS points, is not given, the rector s office at the University of Salzburg can allow admittance to the M.Sc. program upon the successful completion of exams equivalent to 30 ECTS points. The exams are to be completed during the term of M.Sc. study. Those students meeting the requirements of the program Chemistry and Physics of Materials will be awarded the academic degree title, Master of Science ( M.Sc. ). 2 Knowledge and Proficiencies to be obtained During the course of the M.Sc. degree program, students should learn a number of modern experimental and simulation methods, related to the synthesis, processing, and characterization of functional materials. They will be introduced to modern scientific research. An emphasis on instruction will be directed towards empowering students to be able to undertake scientific research in an independent manner. This should ultimately enable them to develop the ability to find innovative solutions to different material- and processing-related problems. For later work in industry and business, as well as at academic institutions, successful students will acquire an understanding of the interplay between the natural sciences and technology in terms of the synthesis, manufacturing and testing of different materials. Students should also learn and have a good overview of a number of different modern research methods. They should be capable of developing the necessary strategies for solving both basic and applied research problems in an independent manner. 3 Organization and Course of Study (1) A list of the different lectures, exercise and laboratory courses, and seminars offered in the M.Sc. program are given in Paragraph 5. The organization of the semester study plan for a single study year ensures that no more than 60 ECTS points are to be exceeded. (2) The total of 90 ECTS points, required for the program, are apportioned between 30 ECTS points from required core courses, 20 ECTS points from required general courses, 10 ECTS free elective courses, 27 ECTS points for a masters thesis, 1 ECTS point for the Seminar for Materials Science and finally 2 ECTS points for the masters examination. 3

4 (3) The required courses cover the fields of Chemistry of Materials, Physics of Materials, Materials Characterization, Functional Materials, Intellectual Property Rights, and Health, Safety and Regulations. (4) 10 ECTS points, taken from two of five different study modules, are to be taken from: I) Nanomaterials and Interfaces, II) Biological Materials and the Environment, III) Materials, Minerals and related Resources, IV) Computational Materials Science, and/or V) Industrial Management. (5) The course Materials Science Seminar is to be successfully completed. (6) a M.Sc. thesis is to be written and submitted (see 6). (7) Within the selection of the various free elective courses, course examinations consisting of 10 ECTS points are to be successfully passed. These courses with their respective examinations can be chosen from any recognized post-secondary educational institutions in Austrian or other countries. They can serve as additional qualification above and beyond those directly offered in the M.Sc. program at Salzburg. The courses can be taken at any time during the time of study. The field of gender studies at PLUS is especially referred to in terms of complementary study. 5 Courses and Semester Schedule (1) In terms of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), a certain number of points are awarded for a given type of university course (i.e. Lecture, Exercise Course, Laboratory, Seminar). The ECTS points for the various courses for the M.Sc. program Chemistry and Physics of Materials are listed in 5 (2). 9 6 Masters Thesis A M.Sc. thesis is to be written within one of the fields I) Chemistry of Materials, II) Physics of Materials, III) Materials Characterization or alternatively from one of the subject matters given in one of the five different study modules. The thesis is to be viewed as a scientific work, which is part of the masters degree program, that serves to ensure that a student has the ability to correctly and comprehensively analyze in an independent manner a given materials-science-related problem. This includes scientific content and methodology. The results of the thesis are to be presented in a seminar of Materials Science. The masters thesis may be started after 90% of the stipulated ECTS points of the required and elected courses are successfully obtained. 9 Masters Examination (1) The first part of the masters examination involves the successful completion of all required core courses, general required courses and free elective courses listed in 5. (2) The second part of the masters examination (2 ECTS points) involves an oral committee meeting consisting of the following subjects: i) a presentation of the masters thesis, ii) a discussion and defense of the thesis, iii) An oral examination of a core discipline that is related to the subject matter of the thesis (taken from the list of required core and chosen required general courses), and iv) Other general curricula relevant to the M.Sc. program. Subjects iii) and iv) are to be carried out so that the requirements of a defense are satisfied. The requirements for the declaration of intent for the oral masters examination are - Proof of completion of the first part of the masters examination. - Proof of a passing grade for the masters thesis following 6. (3) The examination committee consists of three faculty members, one of whom is the supervisor of the masters thesis. 9
