5 GOVERNMENT DECISION TOWARDS NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAM IN MALAYSIA 7 th January 2011: Incorporation of MNPC as NEPIO 10 th December 2010: Decision to establish NEPIO 25 Oct. 2010: Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) launched with nuclear power deployment included 16 th July 2010 : Cabinet Decision to adopt National Nuclear Policy 10 th June 2010: New National Energy Policy incorporated in Tenth Malaysia Plan with nuclear energy as longer term option for the Peninsula. 26 th June 2009: Nuclear energy adopted as one of fuel options for electricity supply post-2020, especially for the Peninsula; 10 th September 2008: Decision to draft National Nuclear Policy 29 th August 2008: 2009 Budget in Parliament to explore nuclear energy & formulate new National Energy Policy Source: adapted & updated from Malaysia s National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) Laboratory 2010 & Energy Commission 2012

7 IS MALAYSIA NUCLEAR READY? Malaysia should continue to be nuclear ready Establishment of regulatory framework Public education to be intensified Feasibility study should proceed Construction takes 5-7 years, the tasks mentioned above are required before construction starts. Making Malaysia nuclear ready is essential. GO or NO-GO decision can be made when we are nuclear ready ~ 2015/2016 Source: TNB Nuclear Energy Unit 13 NUCLEAR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION & TRAINING Almost all public universities and a few private universities offers science, technology & engineering programs UKM offers nuclear science program undergraduate program since 1978 UTM offers health physics undergraduate program USM and UM offer postgraduate programs in medical physics Others offer nuclear Science & Technology as subject in Engineering, Science & Technology and Medical Courses
