Phone: (301) Required Materials: The following OPTIONAL workbook can be purchased online (contact your instructor for assistance): ActivPhysics Online Workbook, by Alan Van Heuvelen A calculator capable of performing scientific operations such as exponential and trigonometric functions is required. A graphing calculator such as the TI-83 or TI-84 is recommended. Blackboard access: each week, materials will be posted in the online course room. You are required to access these materials. 2 Requirements and Grading: 10 Labs for 550 points total Introduction Post for 10 points 6 Discussion posts at 15 points each for 90 points total So, there will be 650 total points available in the course. Grading Scale: % 80-89% 70-79% 60-69% 0-59% A B C D F HOW THE COURSE WORKS General Information: Every week in this course, you will start a new learning module. The learning modules are available in Blackboard and will tell you what you need to do to complete the requirements for that learning module. The Blackboard Learning modules include discussion topics you will be required to answer online each week. The learning modules will also tell you about the module requirements in the ActivPhysics Software or other simulations. You can find the due dates in the course schedule, in the course calendar, and in the appropriate learning module. Computer Systems: Please complete the Getting Started Module so you understand the computer requirements for this course. High-speed Internet access is highly desirable. Note: If your personal computer is not available/working properly, you are required to use the facilities at a CSM computer lab. 3 Class Participation Grade (Discussions): Class participation is a requirement in this course, and is measured through your participation in the module discussion topics. A rubric for each discussion will be provided to be sure you are aware of the requirements for participation in that module. Discussion posts will only be accepted during the period specified. Late periods may be specified late submissions are subject to penalties as outlined in the rubric, however. About ActivPhysics: ActivPhysics is an online simulation program that accompanies the course and is linked to the textbook for the PHY1010 class. For those of you not registered for the classroom course, don t worry. We will be sure that any needed concepts are at least referenced here. It would be helpful to have some College Physics book at hand it does not need to be the Knight, Jones Field Text. To access ActivPhysics, visit: Lab Reports: In order for you to be successful in this course, it is important that you take immediate ownership for the course and assume an active role in the learning process right from the start. Lab Reports will be accepted late (penalties apply); penalties are detailed in the assignment description in Blackboard. COURSE PHILOSOPHY, CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES Course Philosophy: Physics is about relationships between facts and the patterns that exist in nature. We will NOT learn facts just for the sake of learning them. Physics is best learned by doing. Doing means solving problems through reasoning. 5 General Course Content: This is the first of a two-semester, non-calculus course sequence designed to introduce the student to the elementary Principles of General Physics through labs. Specifically the course covers: Fundamental Physical Definitions Mathematics of Vectors, Measurements and Computations Dynamics and Kinematics Newton s Laws Momentum and Energy Circular and Rotational Motion Conservation Laws General Education Objectives: The faculty of The College of Southern Maryland has prepared a statement of what it considers to be the components of general education for all students who graduate from one of our two-year programs. This statement appears in the current College Catalog. While no single course can be expected to address all of these components, the sum of the courses a student takes should allow ample opportunity for all components to be experienced. In PHY1010L, students will have the opportunity to: o o Perform mathematical operations accurately; Make Mathematical estimates and approximations to judge the reasonableness of results; o Interprett graphs, tables and charts; o Understand mathematical information and relationships stated in words; o Utilize appropriate mathematical models to solve problems while recognizing the assumptions and limitations of the models; o Apply appropriate theories to solve problems; o Identify, define, evaluate and solve problems; o Compare, contrast and classify information and concepts; o Recognize cause and effect; o Understand methodologies of natural science. 06/12/2011 P a g e 5

6 COURSE POLICIES Student Policies All students are expected to follow the College of Southern Maryland Student Policies as outlined in your Student Handbook. If you have not received a Student Handbook, please let me know. I can get one mailed to you. I have included below several important policies that also apply to this course. Student Integrity Policy: Students are expected to perform independently on lab reports unless otherwise authorized by the instructor. Any violations of the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook may result in a grade of zero for the paper, exam or quiz and will be forwarded to the Director of Student Affairs and the College Judicial Committee for review and possible disciplinary actions. Audit and Withdrawal Policy: March 26 is the last day to withdraw from a course or change an AUDIT to a CREDIT or CREDIT to an AUDIT. Please consult the College Catalog for procedures, responsibilities and impacts of changing registration status, including special circumstances such as military deployment. Disabilities and Special Needs: Students with disabilities or special needs must present an authorized Accommodation Plan to the instructor in order to receive special accommodations (extra time, large print, tape recorder, etc.) for the course. 7 DIVISION OF MATH, PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING STUDENT ADVICE FOR SUCCEEDING IN THIS COURSE Student Expectations: In order for students to be successful in physics courses, the MTH/PHY faculty has developed the following common expectations. 1. Students need to take responsibility for their own learning. This includes, but is not limited to: Participating in the web activities each week; Clearing distractions before beginning work; being active learners, asking and answering questions, and keeping track of their grade status. 2. Students are expected to study the textbook, not merely work problems from it. The best way to do this is to read the section to be covered before going online for lessons, practice and homework. Students should allow 6-10 hours of class per week. 3. There is no substitute for continued and ongoing studying and doing homework problems. The best way to learn physics is to do physics. If you are having difficulty with the course material, there are several options to get assistance: Talk to the instructor during office hours; Visit the student success center on campus. Tutors and hours are available at: Use online tutoring available at 4. Realize that college level physics can be hard. Learning physics is different from learning some other subjects. Successful students: Understand the material; Process the material; Apply what has been learned to solve a problem correctly; Remember what has been learned in order to learn new material. 5. College physics courses cover twice the material in the same time frame as do high school physics courses. 6. Physics problems involve the application of the laws of physics and the expression of these laws in mathematical terms. Students not only must understand how to apply the physical laws but also must use mathematical principles to complete the problems with enough speed to finish problems in a reasonable amount of time. 7. Good study habits start from the first day of class. Start practicing good study habits while the material is familiar. In that way, those habits will already be a part of the routine when the material becomes more challenging. 8. Student should take pride in their work and never fall into the trap of believing that physics is impossible to understand.
